Book The Voice of Turtle Ann

Download or read book The Voice of Turtle Ann written by George Harmon Smith and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fast paced novel begins at the Potter Inn on the Wire Road. It is a dangerous time, not only for fifteen year-old Jethro Potter but for his sixteen year old sister Vienna, the reconstruction era following the Civil War. It was a time when outlaws roamed the land, a time when the Blacks began realizing they were free, a time when the Ku Klux Klan was organized, grew larger and larger, and harassed both the blacks and whites if they gambled, or resorted to stealing, and that time thousands of people were making ready to pour into the Oklahoma Territory. Jethro's life is disrupted when the Silmon gangsters kill their parents, and hang Jim Lucky, their hired Black man, and outlaws steal all of the Potter horses, $500 in gold, kidnapp Vienna and Jethro, and set out for their hide-out in the Oklahoma Territory. Turtle Ann trails the outlaws all the way to Camden Town in Arkansas, enabling the Black Militia to follow them. The militia overtakes the outlaw band near Camden, and during the pitched battle, Jethro escapes, and walks in to Camden Town. He uses his father's good name and borrows enough money to hire a posse to go after the outlaws, and in a furious chase, the posse catches up with the outlaws in the Oklahoma Territory.

Book Revenge of the Teacher s Pet

Download or read book Revenge of the Teacher s Pet written by Darrin Doyle and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty-year-old science teacher Dale Portwit believes that the peak of his life has come and gone. A failed suicide, a food fetishist, so isolated that the Best Man at his wedding is a framed photograph of his former mailman, Mr. Portwit resolves to live entirely for the moment, to speak his mind at each turn no matter what the consequences. He sets his sights upon Mary Ann Tucker, Elkhart Elementary's plump, accommodating third-grade teacher. Their whirlwind courtship leads to wedding bands, a house in the suburbs, and an indulgent sex life -- so why aren't they happy? Perhaps a little revenge is just what this marriage needs. Decidedly odd, yet also oddly moving, Revenge of the Teacher's Pet is a skillful mix of comedy, poignancy, love, memory, obesity, top-ten lists, fish, and murder.

Book Montgomery Clift

Download or read book Montgomery Clift written by Patricia Bosworth and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The definitive work on the gifted, haunted actor” (Los Angeles Times) and “the best film star biography in years” (Newsweek). From the moment he leapt to stardom with the films Red River and A Place in the Sun, Montgomery Clift was acclaimed by critics and loved by fans. Elegant, moody, and strikingly handsome, he became one of the most definitive actors of the 1950s, the first of Hollywood’s “loner heroes,” a group that includes Marlon Brando and James Dean. In this affecting biography, Patricia Bosworth explores the complex inner life and desires of the renowned actor. She traces a poignant trajectory: Clift’s childhood was dominated by a controlling, class-obsessed mother who never left him alone. He developed passionate friendships with Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor in spite of his closeted homosexuality. Then his face was destroyed after a traumatic car crash outside Taylor’s house. He continued to make films, but the loss of his beauty and subsequent addictions finally brought the curtain down on his career. Stunning and heartrending, Montgomery Clift is a remarkable tribute to one of Hollywood’s most gifted—and tormented—actors.

With revelatory insights and delightful asides, Jeanine Basinger shows us how the studio “star machine” worked when it worked, how it failed when it didn't, and how irrelevant it could sometimes be. She gives us case studies focusing on big stars groomed into the system: the “awesomely beautiful” (and disillusioned) Tyrone Power; the seductive, disobedient Lana Turner; and a dazzling cast of others. She anatomizes their careers, showing how their fame happened, and what happened to them as a result. Deeply engrossing, full of energy, wit, and wisdom, The Star Machine is destined to become an classic of the film canon.

Turtle Alveston is a survivor. At fourteen, she roams the woods along the northern California coast. The creeks, tide pools, and rocky islands are her haunts and her hiding grounds, and she is known to wander for miles. But while her physical world is expansive, her personal one is small and treacherous: Turtle has grown up isolated since the death of her mother, in the thrall of her tortured and charismatic father, Martin. Her social existence is confined to the middle school (where she fends off the interest of anyone, student or teacher, who might penetrate her shell) and to her life with her father. Then Turtle meets Jacob, a high-school boy who tells jokes, lives in a big clean house, and looks at Turtle as if she is the sunrise. And for the first time, the larger world begins to come into focus: her life with Martin is neither safe nor sustainable. Motivated by her first experience with real friendship and a teenage crush, Turtle starts to imagine escape, using the very survival skills her father devoted himself to teaching her. What follows is a harrowing story of bravery and redemption. With Turtle's escalating acts of physical and emotional courage, the reader watches, heart in throat, as this teenage girl struggles to become her own hero—and in the process, becomes ours as well. Shot through with striking language in a fierce natural setting, My Absolute Darling is an urgently told, profoundly moving read that marks the debut of an extraordinary new writer.

This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Raggedy Ann's Wishing Pebble' is written and illustrated by Johnny Gruelle. Gruelle (1880 - 1930), was an American artist and political cartoonist, as well as a children's book illustrator and author. The books of 'The Raggedy Ann Series' all feature their central protagonist, with red yarn for hair and a triangle nose - charting her considerable adventures. Gruelle created Raggedy Ann for his daughter, Marcella, when she brought him an old hand-made rag doll. He drew a face on it, and from his bookshelf, pulled a book of poems by James Whitcomb Riley, combining the names of two poems, 'The Raggedy Man' and 'Little Orphant Annie.' From this moment on, the much-loved children's series went from strength to strength. Sought after by collectors, this re-printed edition showcases Gruelle's original text, further enhanced by his wonderful colour drawings, in order that the two may be fully appreciated by young and old alike.
