Download or read book The Voice of the Garden Classic Reprint written by Abram Linwood Urban and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Voice of the Garden I very gladly write a word in welcome to and in commendation of this little book. Its peculiar value I think will be found in the fact that it not only reports an experience and asks for sympathy, but also Speaks a message and arrests attention. Its appeal lies not only to every garden lover, but equally to all the gar den-less. The parson in his garden, in the cool of the day, thinks much of and cares much for the man in the Street, in the city's dust and heat. His book is an invitation, sent forth with so much winning grace and SO much lov ing Wisdom that many will heed it if they will but read. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time of climate change and mass extinction, how we garden matters more than ever: “An outstanding and deeply passionate book.” —Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals Plenty of books tell home gardeners and professional landscape designers how to garden sustainably, what plants to use, and what resources to explore. Yet few examine why our urban wildlife gardens matter so much—not just for ourselves, but for the larger human and animal communities. Our landscapes push aside wildlife and in turn diminish our genetically programmed love for wildness. How can we get ourselves back into balance through gardens, to speak life's language and learn from other species? Benjamin Vogt addresses why we need a new garden ethic, and why we urgently need wildness in our daily lives—lives sequestered in buildings surrounded by monocultures of lawn and concrete that significantly harm our physical and mental health. He examines the psychological issues around climate change and mass extinction as a way to understand how we are short-circuiting our response to global crises, especially by not growing native plants in our gardens. Simply put, environmentalism is not political; it's social justice for all species marginalized today and for those facing extinction tomorrow. By thinking deeply and honestly about our built landscapes, we can create a compassionate activism that connects us more profoundly to nature and to one another.

Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Voice of a Flower ..".The fairest flowers of the season Are our carnations." - Winter's Tale. The air was faint with the scent of roses and carnations, for all the gardens and glass-houses within ten miles' radius had been rifled of their treasures in order to grace the horticultural exhibition yearly held on the property of Count Sturmfeder. Every gradation of colour and every variety of rose was here represented. Great pyramids of pale tea roses were piled up in rank profusion in the centre of the tent ascribed to the flower department, forming a creamy hillock against which were displayed the more vigorous beauties of blush pink and deep red flowers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden Path: And Other Verses The Garden Path There are blossoms sweet in my garden, But none are as sweet as you, As you skip and dance down the well-worn path, With your eyes of brown and blue. You are fairer, far, than the lilies, Your cheeks put the rose to shame, Oh, this was a dark, dreary garden, Until down the path you came! And still at the gate, I'll be waiting, While the blossoms stately grow, Oh, may I not miss, the hug and the kiss. When my brow is crowned with snow. Book The Garden of Seven Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Garden of Seven Trees Classic Reprint written by Bennett Weaver and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden of Seven Trees To mention only four of the short poems in the present volume, one who can achieve pieces as unlike and as successful as Remembering (is it the scent of the cedar The Candle, Gypsy Glen and Boughs of May deserves the name of poet. The first named has rare delicacy of thought, and it combines with this a felicity of meter and a loveliness of half-concealed rhymes which are in perfect harmony with it. The Candle is vivid in its picture-forming power. It is the kind of conception in which emotion is made frozen and static through its own intensity. Gypsy Glen is a poem of deep and true emotion. It is undoubtedly the voice of the heart, though the other two poems may be the product of the poetic and dramatic imagination. As to Boughs of May, there is to me something alluring in its irregular but smooth movement and in its psychol ogy of the mind, unhinged by grief, which speaks of black-eyed song, which thinks of the stars as blood-buds, and which tries to forget the tomb beneath the moon in a despairing belief that the loved one is not dead. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Voice: Showing the Right and Wrong Action of Voice in Speech and Song; With Laws for Self-Culture A thrush perched at the top of an ash-tree in my garden begins pouring out its full ecstasy of song at daybreak, and, with slight intervals for refreshment, ends at sunset. This will go on for two months or so, without the slightest appearance of fatigue or the slightest sign of loss of tone in voice. This is the mode of voice-production that in the following treatise I have endeavoured to induce in human beings, and define its cause. A singular proof of the use of caverns as resonators multiplying sound is found in those birds whose voices are comparatively fixed, such as the common wild duck. There is no capacity of contraction or expansion as there is in us, for the space is bone, and hen birds have it not.
