Download or read book Down the Rabbit Hole written by Peter Abrahams and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-03-31 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My all-time favorite. Astonishing." (Stephen King) Down the Rabbit Hole is the first book in the Echo Falls mystery series by bestselling crime novelist Peter Abrahams. Perfect for middle school readers looking for a good mystery. Welcome to Echo Falls, home of a thousand secrets. In Down the Rabbit Hole, eighth grader Ingrid Levin-Hill is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or at least her shoes are. And getting them back will mean getting tangled up in a murder investigation as complicated as the mysteries solved by her idol, Sherlock Holmes. With soccer practice, schoolwork, and the lead role in her town's production of Alice in Wonderland, Ingrid is swamped. But as things in Echo Falls keep getting curiouser and curiouser, Ingrid realizes she must solve the murder on her own—before it's too late. "Deft use of literary allusions and ironic humor add further touches of class to a topnotch mystery," said School Library Journal. "Intriguing twists." Publishers Weekly agreed: "The fresh dialogue and believable small-town setting will tempt fans to visit Echo Falls again." The next book in this Edgar Award-nominated series in Behind the Curtain, followed by Into the Dark.

Book A Voice and Nothing More

Download or read book A Voice and Nothing More written by Mladen Dolar and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2006-02-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, philosophically grounded theory of the voice—the voice as the lever of thought, as one of the paramount embodiments of the psychoanalytic object. Plutarch tells the story of a man who plucked a nightingale and finding but little to eat exclaimed: "You are just a voice and nothing more." Plucking the feathers of meaning that cover the voice, dismantling the body from which the voice seems to emanate, resisting the Sirens' song of fascination with the voice, concentrating on "the voice and nothing more": this is the difficult task that philosopher Mladen Dolar relentlessly pursues in this seminal work. The voice did not figure as a major philosophical topic until the 1960s, when Derrida and Lacan separately proposed it as a central theoretical concern. In A Voice and Nothing More Dolar goes beyond Derrida's idea of "phonocentrism" and revives and develops Lacan's claim that the voice is one of the paramount embodiments of the psychoanalytic object (objet a). Dolar proposes that, apart from the two commonly understood uses of the voice as a vehicle of meaning and as a source of aesthetic admiration, there is a third level of understanding: the voice as an object that can be seen as the lever of thought. He investigates the object voice on a number of different levels—the linguistics of the voice, the metaphysics of the voice, the ethics of the voice (with the voice of conscience), the paradoxical relation between the voice and the body, the politics of the voice—and he scrutinizes the uses of the voice in Freud and Kafka. With this foundational work, Dolar gives us a philosophically grounded theory of the voice as a Lacanian object-cause.

Book Samuel Beckett and Cinema

Download or read book Samuel Beckett and Cinema written by Anthony Paraskeva and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1936, Samuel Beckett wrote a letter to the Soviet film director Sergei Eisenstein expressing a desire to work in the lost tradition of silent film. The production of Beckett's Film in 1964, on the cusp of his work as a director for stage and screen, coincides with a widespread revival of silent film in the period of cinema's modernist second wave. Drawing on recently published letters, archival material and production notebooks, Samuel Beckett and Cinema is the first book to examine comprehensively the full extent of Beckett's engagement with cinema and its influence on his work for stage and screen. The book situates Beckett within the context of first and second wave modernist filmmaking, including the work of figures such as Vertov, Keaton, Lang, Epstein, Flaherty, Dreyer, Godard, Bresson, Resnais, Duras, Rogosin and Hitchcock. By examining the parallels between Beckett's methods, as a writer-director, and particular techniques, such as the embodied presence of the camera, the use of asynchronous sound, and the cross-pollination of theatricality and cinema, as well as the connections between his collaborators and the nouvelle vague, the book reveals how Beckett's aesthetic is fundamentally altered by his work for the screen, and his formative encounters with modernist film culture.

Book Simply Genius

Download or read book Simply Genius written by Ervin Laszlo, Ph.D. and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An autobiography usually recounts the life of a person who has achieved wide acclaim in one field. But this extraordinary book describes the life of someone who has achieved international acclaim in three fields! Ervin Laszlo was a child prodigy on the piano and grew up to become an internationally celebrated virtuoso. By the time he reached his 40s, however, he had become a famous scientist and philosopher, and had written a dozen books and more than a hundred articles. He also taught at major universities in Europe, the U.S., and the Far East. Shortly thereafter, he gained world renown as a global visionary, heading research programs at the United Nations and founding an international think tank (the Club of Budapest). But this book is not an autobiography in the traditional sense. In Laszlo’s own words: "I don’t like talking about myself, about what makes me tick and why. Writing about all the things that have happened to me is different. This is storytelling—the telling of a real, lived story: my story, as it unfolded over the years." Join the author on his remarkable journey from his days as an internationally acclaimed concert pianist . . . to his profoundly personal quest to effect positive global transformation!
