Book Friedrich Nietzsche and the Politics of the Soul

Download or read book Friedrich Nietzsche and the Politics of the Soul written by Leslie Paul Thiele and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Nietzsche's works as the "political biography of his soul," Leslie Thiele presents an original and accessible essay on the great thinker's attempt to lead a heroic life as a philosopher, artist, saint, educator, and solitary. He takes as his point of departure Nietzsche's conception of the soul as a multiplicity of conflicting drives and personae, and focuses on the task Nietzsche allotted himself "to make a cosmos out of his chaotic inheritance." This struggle to "become what you are" by way of a spiritual politics is demonstrated to be Nietzsche's foremost concern, which fused his philosophy with his life. The book offers a conversation with Nietzsche rather than a consideration of the secondary literature, yet it takes to task many prevalent approaches to his work, and contests especially the way we often restrict our encounter with him to conceptual analysis. All deconstructionist attempts to portray him as solely concerned with the destruction of the subject and the dispersion of the self, rather than its unification, are called into question. Often portrayed as the champion of nihilism, Nietzsche here emerges as a thinker who saw his primary task as the overcoming of nihilism through the heroic struggle of individuation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little is known of Memling’s life. It is surmised that he was a German by descent but the definite fact of his life is that he painted at Bruges, sharing with the van Eycks, who had also worked in that city, the honour of being the leading artists of the so-called ‘School of Bruges’. He carried on their method of painting, and added to it a quality of gentle sentiment. In his case, as in theirs, Flemish art, founded upon local conditions and embodying purely local ideals, reached its fullest expression.

Book Vision Quest

Download or read book Vision Quest written by Peter James Ford and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “VISION QUEST” is a book recording the continual soul expansion of the seeker, Peter James Ford. Peter’s journey began after a powerful spiritual experience in the little historic seaport in Newburyport, Massachusetts. In Peter’s late night meditations which were along the Merrimac River, the boardwalk, the Salisbury Reservation on the Atlantic Ocean, Plum Island, Maudsley Estate State Park, Pow Wow Hill (Native American Burial Grounds) and Old Hill Burial Grounds he was having vivid explosions in his mind of ‘seemingly’ past life experiences and powerful insights. Peter began seeing the hidden secrets of this quaint little seaport that people never take the time to see. Peter’s intuition and senses increased in an almost scary powerful way giving Peter wisdom from unseen sources. The source may be the Akashic Records/Library that is not a physical library but a place in the ethers that contains all the wisdom and knowledge ever known to anyone over the eons. We can access this power through ancient spiritual practices and apparently Peter has done just that. Stories and Tales began flowing from Peter and he wrote his first book. In the last three years Peter has written eight more books and shares everything he has found from his journeys to the inner worlds. Peter wrote a seven-book series under the title “MYSTICISM IN NEWBURYPORT” with an eighth bonus/companion book called “MYSTIC”. Now you are holding his new writings in your hands. Peter laughingly calls himself “An Unlikely Messenger” as his younger years were nothing resembling anything spiritual. So, here is the story of just another seeker realizing his divinity and returning to his own heart...

Book excerpt: The Quest for Truth chronicles the allegorical journey of Youngblood Hawke as he is transformed from a self-serving soldier of fortune to a warrior prince. Presented with the question and challenge of absolute truth by a mystical sage, Hawke's inability to respond is an epiphany to him and marks the beginning of his struggle and quest. Guided by a beautiful oracle, he is introduced to the teachings of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, Nietzsche, Jose Ortega, Shakespeare, and William James spoken through mentors, sages, and prophets. His thoughts become poetically philosophical as he struggles with his own destiny. Marked as a threat to their power and control over humanity, the enemies of change seek to destroy him and his desire to understand. Youngblood Hawke's destiny as a warrior prince is realized when he raises an army of "Select Warriors" and leads them against the "mass", a secret and powerful society controlling many of the world's governments. Youngblood Hawke quickly learns that the spiritual and philosophical battle for truth will not only be waged on the battlefield but also within the darkest confines of the human mind, heart, and soul.

  • Pages : 209 pages

Download or read book Augenblick written by Koral Ward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augenblick, meaning literally 'In the blink of an eye', describes a 'decisive moment' in time that is both fleeting yet momentously eventful, even epoch-makingly significant. In this book Koral Ward investigates the development of the concept into one of the core ideas in Western existential philosophy alongside such concepts as anxiety and individual freedom. Ward examines the whole extent of the idea of the 'decisive moment', in which an individual's entire life-project is open to a radical reorientation. From its inception in Kierkegaard's works to the writings of Jaspers and Heidegger, she draws on a vast array of sources beyond just the standard figures of 19th and 20th century Continental philosophy, finding ideas and examples in photography, cinema, music, art, and the modern novel.

Book Tragedy After Nietzsche

Download or read book Tragedy After Nietzsche written by Paul Gordon and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In defining rapturous superabundance, Gordon explicates the tension between Apollonian principles of preservation and orderly boundaries (Exemplified in Aristotle's theory of tragedy) and an ecstatic Dionysian energy (essentially a manifestation of will) that ruptures boundaries. Aristotle denied this disruptive element by focusing on tragedy as a rational framework for redefining moral boundaries. Nietzsche seized on it as the core of his theory of tragedy."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Memory of Tiresias

Download or read book The Memory of Tiresias written by Mikhail Iampolski and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1998-10-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of intertextuality has proven of inestimable value in recent attempts to understand the nature of literature and its relation to other systems of cultural meaning. In The Memory of Tiresias, Mikhail Iamposlki presents the first sustained attempt to develop a theory of cinematic intertextuality. Building on the insights of semiotics and contemporary film theory, Iampolski defines cinema as a chain of transparent, mimetic fragments intermixed with quotations he calls "textual anomalies." These challenge the normalization of meaning and seek to open reading out onto the unlimited field of cultural history, which is understood in texts as a semiotically active extract, already inscribed. Quotations obstruct mimesis and are consequently transformed in the process of semiosis, an operation that Iampolski defines as reading in an aura of enigma. In a series of brilliant analyses of films by D.W. Griffith, Sergei Eisenstein, and Luis Buñuel, he presents different strategies of intertextual reading in their work. His book suggests the continuing centrality of semiotic analysis and is certain to interest film historians and theorists, as well as readers in cultural and literary studies.

Book A Nietzsche Reader

  • Publisher : Penguin UK

  • ISBN : 0141921714
  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book A Nietzsche Reader written by Friedrich Nietzsche and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2003-11-27 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literary career of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) spanned less than twenty years, but no area of intellectual inquiry was left untouched by his iconoclastic genius. The philosopher who announced the death of God in The Gay Science (1882) and went on to challenge the Christian code of morality in Beyond Good and Evil (1886), grappled with the fundamental issues of the human condition in his own intense autobiography, Ecce Homo (1888). Most notorious of all, perhaps, his idea of the triumphantly transgressive übermann ('superman') is developed in the extreme, yet poetic words of Thus Spake Zarathustra (1883-92). Whether addressing conventional Western philosophy or breaking new ground, Nietzsche vastly extended the boundaries of nineteenth-century thought.
