Book excerpt: ECHOES FROM THE GNOSIS, THE VISION OF ARIDÆUS Vol IIIThe Story of Aridæus is the most detailed and graphic Vision of Hades preserved to us from classical antiquity, and exceeds in interest even Plato's Story of Er and Cicero's Dream of Scipio, not to speak of the less known Visions of Krates and of Zosimus. It brings to a striking conclusion the instructive treatise of Plutarch, the Greek title of which may be rendered, On the Delay of the Deity in Punishing the Wicked or On the Delay of Divine Justice.Plutarch of Chæroneia, in Boeotia, flourished in the last quarter of the second century (? 50-120 A.D.). He was one of the most enlightened of the ancients, exceedingly well versed in the details of the religious philosophies and the sciences of his day, and possessed of good critical abilities; he was also a man of wide religious experience, holding high office at Delphi in the service of Apollo and also in connection with the Dionysiac Rites, and had a profound knowledge of the inner grades of the Osiric Mysteries. He was educated in Athens and Alexandria and lectured at Rome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: he sentence “when He was hung on the tree of theCross” contains a great puzzle. The word for “tree” inthe original is batos; this may mean the “bush” or “tree”of the cross. But the Cross for the Gnostics was a livingsymbol. It was not only the cross of dead wood, or thedead trunk of a tree lopped of its branches—a symbol ofOsiris in death; it was also the Tree of Life, and wasequated with the “Fiery Bush” out of which the Angel ofGod spake to Moses—that is the Tree of Fiery Life, inthe Paradise of man's inner nature, whence the Wordof God expresses itself to one who is worthy to hear. And this Tree of Life was also, as the Cross, the Tree ofKnowledge of Good and Evil; indeed, both are but oneTree, for the fruit of the Tree of Life is the knowledgeof good and evil, the cross of the opposites.

Book excerpt: Ashrams in Europe twenty-five hundred years ago? Greek philosophers studying in India? Meditation classes in ancient Rome? It sounds unbelievable, but it’s historically true. Alexander the Great had an Indian guru. Pythagoras, Empedocles, and Plotinus all encouraged their students to meditate. Apollonius, the most famous Western sage of the first century c.e., visited both India and Egypt—and claimed that Egyptian wisdom was rooted in India. In Lost Masters, award-winning author Linda Johnsen, digging deep into classical sources, uncovers evidence of astonishing similarities between some of the ancient Western world’s greatest thinkers and India’s yogis, including a belief in karma and reincarnation. Today ancient Greek philosophers are remembered as the founders of Western science and civilization. We’ve forgotten that for over a thousand years they were revered as sages, masters of spiritual wisdom. Lost Masters is an exploration of our long-lost Western spiritual heritage and the surprising insights it can offer us today.

Book Lectures on Ancient Philosophy

Download or read book Lectures on Ancient Philosophy written by Manly P. Hall and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2005-09-08 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete in itself, this volume originated as a commentary and expansion of Manly P. Hall's masterpiece of symbolic philosophy, The Secret Teachings of All Ages. In Lectures on Ancient Philosophy, Manly P. Hall expands on the philosophical, metaphysical, and cosmological themes introduced in his classic work, The Secret Teachings of All Ages. Hall wrote this volume as a reader's companion to his earlier work, intending it for those wishing to delve more deeply into the esoteric philosophies and ideas that undergird the Secret Teachings. Particular attention is paid to Neoplatonism, ancient Christianity, Rosicrucian and Freemasonic traditions, ancient mysteries, pagan rites and symbols, and Pythagorean mathematics. First published in 1929-the year after the publication of Hall's magnum opus-this edition includes the author's original subject index, twenty diagrams prepared under his supervision for the volume, and his 1984 preface, which puts the book in context for the contemporary reader.

Book Goethe and the Philosopher s Stone

Download or read book Goethe and the Philosopher s Stone written by Alice Pearl Raphael and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1965, this study examines the concealed meanings in the second part of Faust, often considered obscure. It is of value not only to students of literature but also comparative religions, as it deals with Goethe’s knowledge of ancient myths, mysteries and Hellenistic religions. It is of value too, to those interested in alchemy as it traces the many alchemical references in Faust. The book gives a psychological interpretation of elements of Goethe’s personal life and work, which succeeds in making the man and the veiled references in his most profound work accessible to the modern reader.
