Download or read book Sensibility Reading and Illustration written by Ann Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eighteenth-century sensibilite has always been controversial. In fact, the term itself refers to complex forms of physical and emotional responsiveness, and Lewis's study investigates the fictional exploration of various key problems of sentimental response that were at the heart of eighteenth-century moral, epistemological and aesthetic debates. These are analysed in conjunction with some of the actual (often emotional) responses that the term, its fictions and images have provoked through time, including an indispensable survey of the varying construction of sensibilite as an object of study, and the polemics subtending its definition. The verbal evocation of the visual in the form of 'spectacles' and 'signs' was understood in the eighteenth century as having an especially powerful impact. Lewis provides a new reading of the theme of sensibility by analysing the 'textual images' in three best-selling novels from the mid-century: Graffigny's Lettres d'une Peruvienne, Marivaux's La Vie de Marianne and Rousseau's Julie. The examination of a largely neglected corpus of illustrations, understood as readings of each text, provides striking new evidence of the complexity, thematic richness and duplicity of these spectacles, whose power to provoke different reactions is perhaps their most interesting characteristic."

Download or read book The Virtuous Orphan written by Pierre Marivaux and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marivaux s "La vie de Marianne "was one of the most popular novels of the eighteenth century. Three different but related English translations appeared between 1736 and 1746 and were reprinted at least a dozen times by 1786. Fielding and Fanny Burney openly admitted the influence of Marivaux. Sterne has been connected with him by scholars, and the Richardson-Marivaux problem (particularly the influence upon "Pamela) "has been discussed since the eighteenth century. References to the novel and the novelist are to be found in the works, correspondence, or conversations of such figures as Gray, Chesterfield, Johnson, Arthur Murphy, James Beattie, Horace Walpole, and the Earl of Orrery a clear indication that the work is valuable not only as a direct influence upon the English novel but also as a touchstone of taste during the period. However, no new edition has appeared since 1746, with the exception of a severely condensed and rearranged redaction by Sir Gilbert Campbell in 1889, of which a copy exists in the Bodleian library. To fill this need, the editors of this new edition have selected the 1743 translation of Mrs. Mary Collyer, entitled "The Virtuous Orphan"; or, " The Life of Marianne, Countess of "* * * * * as the best version stylistically and as the most interesting, since it includes the eleven parts written by Marivaux and concludes both the story of Marianne and of "La Religieuse, "which he left unfinished. The Collyer version, therefore, offers students of English and comparative literature an interesting exercise in eighteenth-century methods of translation and adaptation as well as the instructive metamorphosis (in the added twelfth part) of the French Marianne into an English heroine, who greatly resembles Richardson s Pamela.Rarely equaled as a psychological study of the consummate coquette, the novel also provides an unusually detailed and witty analysis of the early eighteenth-century balance of reason and sensibility, which was to be a key motif in English fiction until the time of Jane Austen and beyond. This edition, prepared with notes and a critical introduction by W. H. McBurney and Michael Shugrue, provides the complex bibliographical history of "Marianne, "its chronology of editions, and a list of useful studies. Spelling, punctuation, and paragraphing have been modernized without textual change."

Book excerpt: As an American author who chose to live in Europe, Henry James frequentlywrote about cultural differences between the Old and New World. Theplight of bewildered Americans adrift on a sea of European sophisticationbecame a regular theme in his fiction. This collection of twenty-four papers from some of the world's leadingJames scholars offers a comprehensive picture of the author's crossculturalaesthetics. It provides detailed analyses of James's perception ofEurope - of its people and places, its history and culture, its artists andthinkers, its aesthetics and its ethics - which ultimately lead to a profoundreevaluation of his writing. With in-depth analysis of his works of fiction, his autobiographical andpersonal writings, and his critical works, the collection is a major contribution to current thinking about James, transtextuality and cultural appropriation.
Download or read book Richardson and Fielding written by Allen Michie and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Richardson and Fielding: The Dynamics of a Critical Rivalry is the first book-length study of one of literature's most persistent and influential rivalries. Using an adaptation of Hans Jauss's reception theory, it surveys the recurring dichotomies projected onto Richardson and Fielding by all types of eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century readers. Even when the rival is not mentioned directly, readers usually make it pointedly clear that one author is being privileged at the other's expense." "Even apart from its serious implications for literary history, the story of the Richardson/Fielding rivalry is a fascinating source of critical passions, prejudices, scholarly irresponsibility, wit, and often surprising interrelations between the literary tastes and cultural environments of the day."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: For millennia, war was viewed as a supreme test. In the period 1750-1850 war became much more than a test: it became a secular revelation. This new understanding of war as revelation completely transformed Western war culture, revolutionizing politics, the personal experience of war, the status of common soldiers, and the tenets of military theory.
