Book excerpt: Sex has been sadly neglected in studies of African folktales. The present book assembles 29 erotic folktales of the Bulsa in Northern Ghana. Most of the Bulsa stories rendered here have been tape-recorded in Buli, their language. Part I of the book contains stories about Sexual Organs. Part II comprises stories about Sexual Intercourse. The erotic folktales of the Bulsa will be investigated in the context of their religious beliefs and their social practices. The book will thus give an intimate view not only of sexual views and practices, but also of the ethos and the world-view of an African people.

Turquoise illuminates the passions and fears of a world more complex and more beautiful than the media images of Islam and Pakistan convey. 'Hussein's stories are about individuals and their countries of exile, where the world itself is seen as a place of transit ... A moving and highly aesthetic expression of a new sensibility.' Amit Chaudhuri 'Turquoise must be read slowly to savour its many pleasures ... The fluid prose is sometimes simple and pristine, sometimes sinuous and visceral ... The stories' imagery is radiant.' Mary Flanagan, Independent 'The symbolic and intellectual complexity of Hussein's collection is undeniable.' Times Literary Supplement 'This Other Salt will add to the richness and density of writings in English, and help the reader traverse different cultures.' Wasafiri

Book Aphrodite and Eros

  • Author : Barbara Breitenberger
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2013-05-13

Download or read book Aphrodite and Eros written by Barbara Breitenberger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a groundbreaking revision of the popular image of Aphrodite and Eros that lives on in Roman poetry (Venus and Cupid) and has inspired artists for centuries. An interdisciplinary analysis of the Archaic period - using literary, iconographical, and cultic evidence - shows the distinct concept behind the two deities of love. Aphrodite's character, sphere of influence, and function feature in her traditional myths and are well reflected in cult. Eros, however, was not yet a similarly personified mythical figure at that stage, nor did he have an individual cult. Breitenberger follows the different stages of the development of Eros's personality. Originally a cosmic entity and an unpersonified aspect of Aphrodite, he was given his mythical identity by successive archaic lyric poets who were particularly keen to mythologize a male counterpart to the established love-goddess Aphrodite. This male love-god turns out to be the divinized homoerotic ideal of the male aristocracy 'worshipped' at their symposia. The development of the male love-god is taken as an example to demonstrate that poets' artistic innovation as well as their social and historical background played an important role in creating Greek mythology.
