Book Violin Varnish

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph Michelman
  • Publisher : Read Books Ltd
  • Release : 2011-03-23
  • ISBN : 144654687X
  • Pages : 211 pages

Download or read book Violin Varnish written by Joseph Michelman and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than eight years of extensive research on the varnish used by the Italian Violin Makers from 1550 to 1750 A. D., it has not been possible to corroborate the results in the chemical laboratory. This is due entirely to the unavailability of samples of the varnish for confirmatory analysis. Violins made by the Italian masters of this period are so valuable and so scarce that a small sample of the varnish has not been procurable for experimental purposes. Therefore, synthesis must precede analysis . . . . and with no assistance from the latter. This, then, will explain the sub-title of this book as: "A Plausible Re-creation of the Varnish Used by the Italian Makers Between the Years 1550 and 1750 A. D." However, the results of this investigation are so logical and so deeply supported by a vast amount of convincing evidence, that publication of the book is in order. First, possibly the findings will be confirmed, or otherwise, by investigators who may be more fortunate in having access to material from authentic violins made by the old masters. Confirmatory chemical tests will be suggested; it should be comparatively simple, especially through modern micro-analytical methods, to determine the presence of certain constituents in the varnish. The subject matter of this book will of necessity become technical, especially when the theoretical aspects are considered. It is realized that not everyone who will be interested in the rediscovery of the old Italian varnish will also be interested in the scientific deductions and conclusions. For this reason, a chapter will be included in which the preparation of the materials from which the varnish is made, the formulation of the varnish and its application will be reduced to the simplest terms. The old masters who lived several hundred years ago and who possessed none of the advantages of modern technology also used only the simplest technique in varnishing and finishing their violins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Violin, How to Choose One Simple though the work may appear, it has cost me more labour than a six-month story, but no tale from my pen has attracted more attention or drawn forth more unqualified expressions of gratitude and loving approval. During the last six months, while these papers have been appearing, I have received from six to twelve letters daily, all of which were couched in terms of praise and delight except two. One of these was only carping and scornful, the other was so horribly abusive that I had not strength to read more than six lines before dropping it into the waste basket. The majority, therefore, have carried the day, and the papers now appear as a book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Gone

Download or read book Gone written by Min Kym and published by Crown. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spellbinding memoir of a violin virtuoso who loses the instrument that had defined her both on stage and off -- and who discovers, beyond the violin, the music of her own voice Her first violin was tiny, harsh, factory-made; her first piece was “Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star.” But from the very beginning, Min Kym knew that music was the element in which she could swim and dive and soar. At seven years old, she was a prodigy, the youngest ever student at the famed Purcell School. At eleven, she won her first international prize; at eighteen, violinist great Ruggiero Ricci called her “the most talented violinist I’ve ever taught.” And at twenty-one, she found “the one,” the violin she would play as a soloist: a rare 1696 Stradivarius. Her career took off. She recorded the Brahms concerto and a world tour was planned. Then, in a London café, her violin was stolen. She felt as though she had lost her soulmate, and with it her sense of who she was. Overnight she became unable to play or function, stunned into silence. In this lucid and transfixing memoir, Kym reckons with the space left by her violin’s absence. She sees with new eyes her past as a child prodigy, with its isolation and crushing expectations; her combustible relationships with teachers and with a domineering boyfriend; and her navigation of two very different worlds, her traditional Korean family and her music. And in the stark yet clarifying light of her loss, she rediscovers her voice and herself.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rollinson's Modern School for the Violin It is a well established fact that a complete course of study for the violin cannot be laid out in one book. However sys tematic and progressive a work may be, the wise student will, at certain stages; seek special studies for no course of practice can be laid out which will fit all alike. In this method I have sought to establish a course which will build a thorough foun dation at each stage of progress and the student is advised to seek special studies whenever further perfection in any par ticular form of exercise is desired. Any such which are re ferred to in this book may be depended upon as perfect in their special lines. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Violin Playing The rules and method, etc., set forth are simply the ordinary results of my own long experience as both teacher and public soloist, together with a keen selection of the best points peculiar to the most eminent violinists of our time. Each portion of the whole subject follows on in systematically arranged order according to the degree of difficulty, thus making reference to any particular point more easy. Without claiming to have founded any new system of technique, style or school, an honest attempt has been made to explain the most simple and natural method and means of obtaining such really correct technique as would form a sound preliminary towards attaining the highest degree of style and polish always noticeable in the very finest players. It is hoped that teachers also will find some useful hints to simplify their labours in the teaching of slow or difficult pupils, and should any struggling violinist by the perusal of this book be guided out of a fault or have his difficulties in any way lessened, the writer will be more than compensated for his small endeavours. Download or read book The Secrets of Violin Playing written by Wm C. Honeyman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secrets of Violin Playing: Being Full Instructions and Hints to Violin Players, for the Perfect Mastery of the Instrument The extensive field over which my little works appear to have travelled has called forth a very great amount of correspondence, always eulogistic, but generally containing also many practical questions on points not fully explained in the books. On many of these points there must always be some difference of opinion, but so far as it is in my power I shall endeavour to make them clear in these pages in a manner so impartial that the reader may to a great extent rely upon his own judgment in the adoption or rejection of the hints. Many of them need not be placed before a beginner at all, inasmuch as so many minute details are apt to scare a young player. It is therefore to violin players more than beginners that I now address myself, and more especially the earnest student.
