Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century Brockport, NY was transformed from a village whose economy relied heavily on manufacturing to a college town. The Erie Canal that had given the town its birth, growth, and prosperity faded as a means to ship freight, and rose as a recreational area. An educational hub grew out of a "Normal School" with a few hundred two-year students to a four-year comprehensive college and graduate school with 8,600 students. The types of retail businesses in the historic commercial district of Main Street changed dramatically. Streets transformed from dirt to cobblestone to bricks to asphalt. Transportation shifted from trolleys and trains, horses and buggies, to automobiles. Yet, much remained the same. The Victorian homes and commercial structures on Main Street survived a near brush with Urban Renewal. With the canal continuing to be the heart of the village, the college and many schools serve to enrich Brockport's mind. This short book attempts to document the most visible--and vivid--aspects of that transformation.

Book The Brockport Murder Dog Trial

Download or read book The Brockport Murder Dog Trial written by Bill Hullfish Verbridge and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1936, fourteen-year-old Maxwell Breeze was playing in the waters of the Erie Canal in Brockport when a dog jumped into the canal and climbed his back, and the boy drowned. The owner of the dog was served notice to appear at a hearing, at which time a trial was set to determine if the dog should be put down. The unusual case captivated the nation as newspapers from coast to coast covered the story, Paramount Pictures dispatched "The Eyes and Ears of the World" to film the events and a media circus descended on the quiet village. During the trial, more than thirty witnesses were called, including a national expert brought in to evaluate the canine defendant, which journalists referred to as "the most talked-of dog on earth." Authors Bill Hullfish and Laurie Fortune Verbridge reveal the bizarre incident, trial and spectacle that came to Brockport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War left no corner of the United States untouched, and Brockport--a small western New York town--was no exception. Brockport more than answered the call of duty, sending hundreds of its sons to battle. Brockporters were among the first to respond to Lincoln's initial call for volunteers, and the experiences of that company in the famous "Old 13th" are renowned. Another company led the charge that helped save Little Round Top before the climactic battle at Gettysburg, and still another played a key role in repulsing Pickett's charge. Meanwhile, the homefront was intensely involved in recruitment drives and providing aid to soldiers and their families. Local historian William G. Andrews retells the experiences of Brockport's regiments at war, as well as how life was affected at home. Discover the stories of bravery and endurance from Brockport during the Civil War.

Book Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World

Download or read book Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World written by Joanna Weaver and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CBA BESTSELLER • More than a million copies sold! An invitation for every woman who’s ever felt she isn’t godly enough, isn’t loving enough, isn’t doing enough. “Easy to read, personal, and well-written with a message much more than surface deep. Joanna probed, challenged, and encouraged me to live day by day as Mary in a Martha world.”—Carole Mayhall, author of Come Walk with Me and Here I Am Again, Lord The life of a woman today isn’t all that different from the lives of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord’s feet . . . but the daily demands of a busy world just won’t leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him . . . yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy. Then comes Jesus, into the midst of your busy life, to extend the same invitation he issued long ago to the two sisters from Bethany. Tenderly, he invites you to choose “the better part”—a joyful life of intimacy with him that flows naturally into loving service. With her fresh approach to the familiar Bible story, Joanna Weaver shows how all of us, Marys and Marthas alike, can draw closer to our Lord: deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy. This book includes a twelve-week Bible study for individual or group use. A Study Guide and a corresponding ten-session video series on DVD or online are available separately.
