Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Victories of Rome and the Temporal Monarchy of the Church It is now some thirty-four years since the Victories of Rome first appeared. Two or three editions were issued at intervals, the last in 1893; and for some time the pamphlet has been out of print. As a member of the League of St. Sebastian, I have always felt bound to strive to uphold the Cause of the Temporal Power by lectures, sermons, writings, and other laudable if humble means. Recent events have drawn attention to the subject, and have roused anew considerable interest in the present position of the Holy See. It becomes apparent that the prolonged silence of some did not arise from indifference, while the demeanour of many convincingly proves that Father Faber's warning was almost prophetic, when he preached that the salvation of not a few would come to depend in these days upon their devotion to the Church and the Pope. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Church and Court of Rome, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Establishment of Christianity Under Constantine to the Present Time There is nothing, says an able writer, in the history of the whole world, more extraordinary than the various events connected with the name and the territory of Rome. The first studies of our youth acquaint us with the valiant deeds and self-devotion of Roman heroes and patriots, the magic influence of Roman eloquence, the splendid victories of Roman armies, the profound policy of Roman senates, and the almost boundless dominion of Roman Emperors: and such is their impression that every thing patient in endurance, mighty in operation, brilliant in success, and wise in counsel, becomes, in our feelings, identified with that which is Roman. But even thus limited the subject is a vast one, far surpassing the possibility of adequate treatment in a work like this. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifteen Years in the Church of Rome To Henry Norwell, Esq., - It is with great satisfaction that I mention your name the first among the many to whom I dedicate this book. I owe this to you as a token of gratitude for the help and kindness which more than once I received at your hands, years ago when a stranger in the city of Boston. And the respect and esteem I entertain for you will plead my apology for venturing to dedicate to you this earnest, honest, and it is hoped not unsuccessful, attempt to vindicate the true Church from all alliance or identity with the Roman system. To the Freemasons, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and Knights of Pythias, of the United States of America, I dedicate this book, also.
