Book Saudi Arabia s Development Strategy Comparative Advantage Vs Sustainable Growth

Download or read book Saudi Arabia s Development Strategy Comparative Advantage Vs Sustainable Growth written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In almost every country, industry is the glamour sector of economic development. People look to industrial development to provide much needed employment, to generate higher individual and national income, to relieve balance of payments constraints through import substitution, to open up markets for primary products such as those from the mining and fishing sectors, to provide the country with greater economic independence, to generate new tax revenues, and to furnish an important source of national pride. I By and large, these hoped for benefits of industrialization are realistic--provided a country makes sensible choices. Until recently, investment in Saudi Arabia has concentrated on infrastructure, light manufacturing and construction materials. Most of the major products in transportation, communications, health, education, electricity, and water that were initiated in the 1970s are completed or nearing completion. Since the mid-1970s, attention has centered on heavy industries, primarily in the downstream activities of the petroleum sector and on import substitution. In fact, one of the more intriguing question marks concerning the kingdom's development strategy centers precisely around the government's selection of industries. A steel plant, fertilizer plants, domestic and export-oriented refineries, and a series of major petrochemical complexes form the basis of the government's attempt to diversify the economy. What is the rationalization for this strategy and is all this too ambitious for a country with virtually no previous industrial experience? As Yannis Stournaras has recently noted, the whole rationality of this policy has been seriously questioned. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the viability of Saudi Arabia's industrial development strategy.

Book Economic Diversification in Oil Exporting Arab Countries

Download or read book Economic Diversification in Oil Exporting Arab Countries written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: countries face similar challenges to create jobs and foster more inclusive growth. The current environment of likely durable low oil prices has exacerbated these challenges. The non-oil private sector remains relatively small and, consequently, has been only a limited source of growth and employment. Because oil is an exhaustible resource, new sectors need to be developed so they can take over as the oil and gas industry dwindles. Over-reliance on oil also exacerbates macroeconomic volatility. Greater economic diversification would unlock job-creating growth, increase resilience to oil price volatility and improve prospects for future generations. Macro-economic stability and supportive regulatory and institutional frameworks are key prerequisites for economic diversification...

Book Saudi Arabia Rush to Development RLE Economy of Middle East

Download or read book Saudi Arabia Rush to Development RLE Economy of Middle East written by Ragaei el Mallakh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saudi Arabia is one of the most controversial and least known of the Arab nations. A land of massive contrasts – between its densely populated cities and its vast expanses of desert; between the recent poverty of its villages and the massive wealth created by oil, which is drawing a labour force from most of the neighbouring countries; between the aggressive technocratic and industrial thrust forward and the strongly traditionalist Islamic basis of the ruling ideologies – it has progressed to world prominence in a matter of years after centuries of little or no change. The change is not so much a surge, or even a thrust, as a rush into the industrialized and wealthy world. This book analyzes the problems and achievements of Saudi development and provides the first detailed critique of the Third Development Plan. First published in 1982.

Book Economic Diversification in the GCC

Download or read book Economic Diversification in the GCC written by Mr.Tim Callen and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The economies of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are heavily reliant on oil. Greater economic diversification would reduce their exposure to volatility and uncertainty in the global oil market, help create jobs in the private sector, increase productivity and sustainable growth, and help create the non-oil economy that will be needed in the future when oil revenues start to dwindle. The GCC countries have followed many of the standard policies that are usually thought to promote more diversified economies, including reforms to improve the business climate, the development of domestic infrastructure, financial deepening, and improvements in education. Nevertheless, success to date has been limited. This paper argues that increased diversification will require realigning incentives for firms and workers in the economies—fixing these incentives is the “missing link” in the GCC countries’ diversification strategies. At present, producing non-tradables is less risky and more profitable for firms as they can benefit from the easy availability of low-wage foreign labor and the rapid growth in government spending, while the continued availability of high-paying and secure public sector jobs discourages nationals from pursuing entrepreneurship and private sector employment. Measures to begin to address these incentive issues could include limiting and reorienting government spending, strengthening private sector competition, providing guarantees and financial support for those firms engaged in export activity, and implementing labor market reforms to make nationals more competitive for private sector employment.

Book The Report Saudi Arabia 2014

Download or read book The Report Saudi Arabia 2014 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2014-08-18 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home to an estimated 15.9% of the world’s proven oil reserves, Saudi Arabia is the single largest economy in the Middle East and North Africa. According to the Ministry of Finance, real GDP grew by 3.8% to $746bn in 2013. While oil income is expected to continue to account for the majority of government revenues for the foreseeable future, the non-oil sector has expanded significantly in recent decades growing 9.3% in 2013. Indeed, while some Western countries may be seeing a return to cautious optimism and leading emerging economies are weighing the potential impact on capital flows of tapering in the US Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing programme, Saudi Arabia is seeing sustained growth buoyed by high global oil prices and internal investment in its own infrastructure. Some 15 years after Saudi Arabia attended the inaugural meeting of G20 countries, its key economic indicators make it the envy of many other member states. Given the size of Saudi economy within the regional and indeed global market, OBG looks in depth at bilateral trade between ASEAN nations and the GCC.
