Book From Antietam to Appomattox with Upton s Regulars

Download or read book From Antietam to Appomattox with Upton s Regulars written by Dewitt Clinton Beckwith and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years after the Civil War, the 121st New York Volunteers (Upton's Regulars) finally published a history of their regiment. Its stated author was a man who had not served directly with the 121st but had based the book on a memoir written by a survivor who had enlisted at age 15. That boy, Dewitt Clinton Beckwith, published his memoir thirty years after the war in an obscure upstate New York newspaper, The Hekrimer Democrat. For years, the "origin story" lay hidden in plain sight, until editor Salvatore Cilella discovered it while researching for a regimental history. The original 53 weekly installments, edited and annotated here, richly detail the horrors and folly of war. They reveal the slow maturation of a boy thrust into almost four years of war. Beckwith was present at nearly all the historic Eastern Theater engagements from Antietam to Appomattox, including an abortive stint with the 91st New York in Florida in 1861. He describes his various Tom Sawyer-like adventures with the VI Corps of the Army of the Potomac, dealing with death, disease, loss and ultimate elation at Lee's surrender, tempered only by Abraham Lincoln's death.

The regiment fought against Confederate generals, guerrillas, and partisan rangers such as John Singleton Mosby. It fought in the Battle of New Market, accompanied David Hunter on his raid to Lynchburg, opposed Jubal Early in his 1864 Maryland offensive, and engaged in countless additional skirmishes in Virginia and West Virginia. In June 1865, the 21st was transferred to the Colorado territory for guard duty along the Overland Stage Route. It was mustered out there in August 1866. Sabres in the Shenandoah provides an almost day-by-day account of the men of the regiment and their battles, skirmishes, activities, and hardships.

Download or read book A Surgeon s Civil War written by Daniel M. Holt and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 1991-05-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel M. Holt, a successful country doctor in the upstate village of Newport, New York, accepted the position of assistant surgeon in the 121st New York Volunteer Army in August 1862. At age 42 when he was commissioned, he was the oldest member of the staff. But his experience served him well, as his regiment participated in nearly all the major campaigns in the eastern theater of the war--Crampton's Gap before Antietam, Fredericksburg, Salem Church, the Mine Run campaign, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, the 1864 Shenandoah Valley campaign, and Appomattox. In A Surgeon's Civil War, the educated and articulate Holt describes camp life, army politics, and the medical difficulties that he and his colleagues experienced. His reminiscences and letters provide an insider's look at medicine as practiced on the battlefield and offer occasional glimpses of the efficacy of Surgeon General William A. Hammond's reforms as they affected Holt's regiment. He also comments on other subjects, including slavery and national events. Holt served until October 17, 1864 when ill health forced him to resign.
