Although this volume of poetry was not accorded an important place in American literary history, it nevertheless spoke to a wide and apparently appreciative audience, going through five editions and six printings in four years. It is comprised of five story-length poems and ten shorter poems. The preface was written by Laura Haviland, the Adrian Quaker and abolitionist, who started the first anti-slavery society in Michigan and supervised the operation of the Underground Railroad.
