Book excerpt: The Verse of Asaph is a retelling of Bible stories in poetic verse with iambic pentameter and it elaborates on certain narratives in an attempt to explore details our Biblical text omits. I'm reading between the lines to facilitate a more palpable grasp of what's really going on in these tales. My desire is to paint poetic portraits in which not only revelation is amusing to read but also the colors of honest inference are stark and lurid enough to upstage our sugarcoated glaze. I'm after the marrow of these stories and will not be deterred with the bones of creed or the obscene flavor of sticky things.

Book Worship Matters Foreword by Paul Baloche

Download or read book Worship Matters Foreword by Paul Baloche written by Bob Kauflin and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2008-03-26 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing is more essential than knowing how to worship the God who created us. This book focuses readers on the essentials of God-honoring worship, combining biblical foundations with practical application in a way that works in the real world. The author, a pastor and noted songwriter, skillfully instructs pastors, musicians, and church leaders so that they can root their congregational worship in unchanging scriptural principles, not divisive cultural trends. Bob Kauflin covers a variety of topics such as the devastating effects of worshiping the wrong things, how to base our worship on God's self-revelation rather than our assumptions, the fuel of worship, the community of worship, and the ways that eternity's worship should affect our earthly worship. Appropriate for Christians from varied backgrounds and for various denominations, this book will bring a vital perspective to what readers think they understand about praising God.

Book Broken Searching Trusted Powerful

Download or read book Broken Searching Trusted Powerful written by J. Guarnieri Hagemeyer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first glance, it may seem as though the Bible is populated with the stories of faithful men, courageous men, or nefarious men, men who were either enemies or friends of God. Mostly stories of men. Added to the difficulty of seeing women in the pages of Scripture is the effort it takes to “hear” their voices and understand their stories. The Bible itself was written largely from the male perspective, concentrating on male heroes and villains. (Only the books of Ruth and Esther focus on a woman, and neither one is written from an explicitly female lens.) Women most often become supporting characters. Without thinking about it, we’ve accepted this point of view, and this unspoken role for women across time. But a second glance reveals the stories of often-unnamed women as living faithfully and courageously for God (as well as some living powerfully and villainously against God). Regardless of whose point of view is reflected in Scripture’s stories, women as much as men have contributed to the great narrative of God and humanity. May their grit and tenacity, their dignity and tragedy embolden you and me to live out our faith to the full.

Book Memories of Asaph

    Book Details:
  • Author : Karl N. Jacobson
  • Publisher : Fortress Press
  • Release : 2017-06-15
  • ISBN : 1506418724
  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book Memories of Asaph written by Karl N. Jacobson and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Psalms of Asaph (Pss. 50, 73‒83) contain a concentration of historical referents unparalleled in the Psalter, they have rarely attracted sustained historical interest. Karl N. Jacobson identifies these psalms as containing cultic historiography, historical narratives written for recitation in worship, and explores them through mnemohistory, attending to how the past is remembered and to the rhetorical function of recitation in the cultic setting. Jacobson describes mnemohistory at the intersection of memory and history, explores the singularity of the rhetorical and formals aspects of remembrance in the Asaph material, and discusses “residual mnemohistory,” material that is not intentionally called to remembrance. Jacobson shows that Asaph “remembers” the past as a movement from henotheism to a more orthodox form of Yahwism as the core memory that informs a new historical situation for worship participants. By describing the “way Asaph remembers,” Jacobson highlights symbolic and individualized elements of the psalms’ mnemohistorical work that earlier form-critical approaches failed to recognize.

Book The Psalms of Asaph and the Pentateuch

Download or read book The Psalms of Asaph and the Pentateuch written by Michael D. Goulder and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1996-12-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asaph psalms (50, 73-83) are a unity. They often call God 'Elohim' and 'El', and the people 'Joseph', as Amos does; they appeal to Israelite history, the exodus and the covenant; they are written in the face of military catastrophe. In this suggestive and brilliant work, Goulder argues that they were composed in Bethel in the 720s for use as the psalmody for the autumn festival. This gives us vital new evidence for the history of the Pentateuch: there was at Bethel a historical tradition from at least the time of the oppression in Egypt to the Solomonic Empire; the Asaphites took this tradition to Jerusalem and their descendants were the Deuteronomists.

Book excerpt: Christianity Today 2023 Book Award Finalist (Bible & Devotional) Sheltering Mercy helps us rediscover the rich treasures of the Psalms--through free-verse prayer renderings of their poems and hymns--as a guide to personal devotion and meditation. The church has always used the Psalms as part of its prayer life, and they have inspired countless other prayers. This book contains 75 prayers drawn from Psalms 1-75, providing lyrical sketches of what authors Ryan Whitaker Smith and Dan Wilt have seen, heard, and felt while sojourning in the Psalms. While each prayer corresponds to a particular psalm and touches on its themes and ideas, it is not a new translation of the Psalms or an attempt to modernize or contextualize their content or language. Rather, the prayers are responses to the Psalms written in harmony with Scripture. These prayers help us quiet our hearts before God and welcome us into a safe place amid the storms of life. This artful, poetic, and classic devotional book features compelling custom illustrations and beautiful hardcover binding, offering a fresh way to reflect on and pray the Psalms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a book about the Psalms which are the devotional center of the Bible, adored by not only the people of Israel but by New Testament believers generally. The Psalms are grouped into five books, each of which has a central theme. These divisions are preceded by an outline and analysis of the Psalms as to content and purpose. While each of the Psalms are analyzed in turn, they are also examined as they relate to their grouping. It is this synthetic approach which will make it particularly valuable to all students of the Bible. To facilitate the study of the Psalms, the complete text of each Psalm has been printed preceding its own analysis. Dr. Morgan has long been recognized as one of the great Bible expositors of modern times, and this book deserves a worthy place alongside his other works.

The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues.
