It is in one of these popular theatres that Verdi probably witnessed one of the first performances of Dumas fils' La Dame aux camélias, which became hugely successful in 1852. The ballet music here was composed for the Paris premiere of Il Trovatore, given on January 12, 1857 at the Salle Le Peletier in Paris conducted by Narcisse Girard. The ballet, inserted into the third act after the the Soldiers' chorus, portrays Gypsy dancers enterianing the troops. This is a newly edited and engraved score prepared by Howard K. Wolf which takes all authoritative sources into account.
