I have availed myself of this opportunity to reprint here, with the authors' permission, two papers on 'to be' which appeared earlier in Foundations of Language: "'Being' and 'Having' in Estonian", by Ilse Lehiste, and "'Being' in Linguistics and Philosophy: a Preliminary Inquiry", by A. C. Graham. These two papers appear at the end of the volume; all other papers appear in the order in which they reached the editor's desk. Two more volumes are to precede the concluding volume: a study of 'to be' in Ancient Greek, by Charles H. Kahn; and a study on 'to be' in biblical Hebrew and biblical Greek, by James Barr.
