Though we see the waves lapping at our feet, rising, threatening, are we secure within that invisible barrier which holds back the waters? In every province into which faith enters, not only in the belief in God, but the trust in our friends and in our own business in life, when once standing-ground has been attained, difficulties which threatened break like waves on a rock and are given back in vapour to the air. Book Our Reasonable Faith Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Reasonable Faith Classic Reprint written by Park Hays Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Reasonable Faith This book is the effort of the writer to tell in simple language some of the thoughts concerning the Christian faith and the Christian life which have helped him in the secret battles of his own mind, and which have helped others like himself with whom he has dealt. The book is not a formal argument for the truth of the Christian faith; it is not a book on Christian evidences; nor is it an apologetic; although it is hoped that it will strengthen the faith of those who may be troubled about the truth of Christianity, and that it may give to its readers new reasons for the hope that is in them. The four subjects which are brought together in this book have been discussed separately in many volumes, but the writer does not know of a single book which brings them together in this way for the ordinary reader. That there arc so few quotations from books other than the Bible is due to the fact that most of the material has been made so much a part of the writer's own thinking that he has lost any consciousness of its connection with its original sources. The book deals with four subjects which vitally concern the Christian - the Bible, in which the revelation of God to men has been preserved; great truths revealed in the Scriptures and proved by experience; the Commandments as the laws of conduct; and the Church, through which the truth has been preserved, by which the truth is taught, and in connection with which the Christian finds spiritual nurture and a field for service. Book From Traditional to Rational Faith

Download or read book From Traditional to Rational Faith written by R. Andrew Griffin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Traditional to Rational Faith: Or the Way I Came From Baptist to Liberal Christianity After much hesitation, this memoir is published. It is most painful to the author to say aught which reflects on that denomination whose kindness and love he has known from childhood. Yet, on all hands, so much astonishment is expressed that one living so long in the remote interior of orthodoxy should have rested at last in the Unitarian fellowship, that it may be desirable and of interest to give an account of the course pursued. It is a matter of regret that the form of the story is intensely personal; but it was originally cast without any definite idea of publication, my chief anxiety being faithfully to record the exact impressions made from time to time. I trust it may be useful to many who are struggling after the same manner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rational Test: Bible Doctrine in the Light of Reason To show that certain fundamental biblical doc trines, as held by orthodox believers, are reasonable that is the chief purpose of this volume. The author's position is that reason should not be placed above the 1 Bible; that is rationalism. Very often the proper attitude of the human mind before God's truth is, Believing where we cannot prove. It is not ir rational that it should be so, for in many of the coma monest affairs of life we must often walk by faith, and not by sighta The of an infant in its mother's arms are acts of intuition and faith, not of reason; nor are such acts unusual throughout the entire course of life. Thinking men will not forget the sweet reasonableness of faith. It is incorrect to think that faith and reason are opposed to each other. This error springs from the supposition that faith and credulity are synonymous terms. So far from this being true, it is an undisputed fact that many of the wisest and best men of the world possess the most childlike faith in Christ and His revelation. Superior knowledge makes a man con scious of the limitations of human learning, and, there fore, leads to humble trust and a childlike disposition. Whether faith is rational or not depends upon its object. Faith in that which is true and right is a most rational act of the soul blindly to accept error is credulity, and is, therefore, irrational. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Truth: A Reasonable Faith and the Future Religion of the World The nearest heavenly body to us is the moon, which is called The Daughter because it is so beautiful. It is a distance of about two hundred and thirty-eight thousand miles from this earth. That would be a long journey for Christ to take in a suit of the gardener's clothes. The sun most of the time is about ninety-three millions of miles from this earth. We are told that the distance to all the planets is deter mined with mathematical precision. The fact is that none of the astronomers agree on the exact distance to many of the planets, some of the calculations varying about five million miles. The nearest of the stars is at a distance of about twenty-five billions of miles from this earth. If we should tell our Christian friends, without an explana tion, that we could see so far as that, they would call us liars, or think that we were insane. All of these heavenly bodies are at a great distance from the earth; are independent, each of the other, and are immense distances apart. We see the extent of the heavens, with millions of stars, which are worlds, many of them larger than the earth on which we live. Are not these facts enough to convince a sane person that there is a greater being than man, one whom we call God? This Being we should love and worship in preference to all others. Book The Great and Good an Introduction to Rational Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Great and Good an Introduction to Rational Religion Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great and Good, an Introduction to Rational Religion Books on Religion fall under three heads: First, the great mass of orthodox literature; next, the semi orthodox; and lastly, that which is rational or openly heretical. The semi-orthodox writers are marked by caution, reticence, and something bordering on insincerity. They are adepts at pouring new wine into old bottles. They know exactly that spice of heresy which the public will tolerate, and are careful not to exceed it by the fraction of a grain. The rational or openly heretical books are mostly agnostic, atheistic, materialistic, or negative. In fact some people seem to regard the word rational as equivalent to atheistic. Not many books on Religion are at once frankly rational, and at the same time uncompromisingly idealist. Who will ascend the watch-tower of Idealism and tell us in plain language what he sees? If this task required any higher qualification than absolute sincerity, assuredly the present writer would not have undertaken it. The object, then, of this book is to state the religious opinions of the Great and Good men of past and present times, and to trace these opinions to Idealism as the central principle in which they meet and harmonise. Wherever possible I have given not my own words but those of some distinguished writer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Rational Religion Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rational Religion Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by John Conway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Religion, Vol. 4 Enan says, the totality of human experience may be taken as the foundation Of a reasonable creed. The sum of this experience tells us that man believes in an Infinite something; that he believes in Offering personal devotion to this Infinite something that the Infinite in some way reveals Itself; that men believe in a self-conscious individuality which survives their bodies that any violation of the internal sense of right and wrong must, sometime or other, be visited by unhappy consequences. The first revealed name of this Infinite something in the Scripture is Elohim. It is called Jehovah by the Israelites. We say God. The great question with which St. Thomas puzzled his teachers at Monte Cassino is, What is God? Poetic prose-writers may declare God to be a being of infinite beauty and perfection, which human tongue can not express, nor angelic nature comprehend, and yet leave us as much in the dark as ever. AS the absence Of definition is a frequent cause of misunderstanding, we give one which, for our present inquiry, all educated people, whether believers or unbelievers, will accept.
