Book excerpt: Domestic oppression...what is that?Did you know that domestic oppression is the seedbed for every other form of abuse that takes place within families and churches? And did you know that the quantity of people who suffer under domestic oppression within the church is staggering in its pervasiveness? In Behind the Veil: Exposing the Evil of Domestic Oppression and Providing Hope, pastor and biblical counselor Warren Lamb pulls back the veil on an evil that has been too long misunderstood and overlooked in Christian circles. In Behind the Veil, Pastor Lamb draws on his thirty-plus years of specialized counseling with oppression and abuse survivors to train and equip the church-both leaders and laypersons-to: -Identify domestic oppression and its sufferers among us;-Become rescuers comforters of the oppressed;-Confront and, where possible, call to account those who oppress their families;-Provide oppression-free churches for God's children to thrive in;-Become the safe haven for the oppressed and exploited that Christ intends for it to be.It is high time we effectively partner with Jesus Christ to "proclaim release to the captives...and to set free those who are oppressed." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. Burning the veil draws upon sources from newly-opened archives, exploring the ‘emancipation’ of Muslim women from the veil, seclusion and perceived male oppression during the Algerian War of decolonisation. The claimed French liberation was contradicted by the violence inflicted on women through rape, torture and destruction of villages. This book examines the roots of this contradiction in the theory of ‘revolutionary warfare’, and the attempt to defeat the National Liberation Front by penetrating the Muslim family, seen as a bastion of resistance. Striking parallels with contemporary Afghanistan and Iraq, French ‘emancipation’ produced a backlash that led to deterioration in the social and political position of Muslim women. This analysis of how and why attempts to Westernise Muslim women ended in catastrophe has contemporary relevance and will be important to students and academics engaged in the study of French and colonial history, feminism and contemporary Islam.

Book The Veiled Sayings

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Elder
  • Publisher : Page Publishing Inc
  • Release : 2020-05-01
  • ISBN : 1647011205
  • Pages : 83 pages

Download or read book The Veiled Sayings written by Elizabeth Elder and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Elder's reflections on the veiled sayings of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas reveal an experience of the divine that is both intimate and near, rather than distant and authoritative. Her reading of Thomas leads the reader to a Jesus who does not speak to you, but within you and from you, as you meditate on these simultaneously exotic and familiar sayings. Elder discloses an ancient practice of meditative reading that suggests that the Gospel is not about Jesus, but about you, the reader—that Jesus' words are also your words. This is the archetypal Jesus that speaks you and lives you. This is a reading in line with the meditative reading praxis that the anonymous author of the Gospel of Thomas would appreciate. As Elder demonstrates with great verve and intuition, this is a text not to be "studied," but cultivated and contemplated. Her marvelous book is an invitation to this practice. – Justin Lasser, M.Phil., Ph.D., Associate professor of religious studies, Manchester University, North Manchester, Indiana.

Book Rethinking Muslim Women and the Veil Challenging Historical Modern Stereotypes

Download or read book Rethinking Muslim Women and the Veil Challenging Historical Modern Stereotypes written by Katherine Bullock and published by IIIT. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now the bulk of the literature about the veil has been written by outsiders who do not themselves veil. This literature often assumes a condescending tone about veiled women, assuming that they are making uninformed decisions choices about veiling makes them subservient to a patriarchal culture and religion. “Rethinking Muslim Women and the Veil” offers an alternative viewpoint, based on the thoughts and experiences of Muslim women themselves. This is the first time a clear and concise book-length argument has been made for the compatibility between veiling and modernity. Katherine Bullock uncovers positive aspects of the veil that are frequently not perceived by outsiders. “Rethinking Muslim Women and the Veil” looks at the colonial roots of the negative Western stereotype of the veil. It presents interviews with Muslim women to discover their thoughts and experiences with the veil in Canada. The book also offers a positive theory of veiling. The author argues that in consumer capitalist cultures, women can find wearing the veil a liberation from the stifling beauty game that promotes unsafe and unhealthy ideal body images for women. This book also includes an extensive bibliography on topics related to Muslim women and the veil.

Book Veil Politics in Liberal Democratic States

Download or read book Veil Politics in Liberal Democratic States written by Ajume H. Wingo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-18 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exciting and challenging account of the development and sustainability of the liberal democratic state, Ajume H. Wingo offers a completely new perspective from that provided by political theorists. Such theorists will typically argue for the basic values of liberal democracies by rationally justifying them. This book argues that it is non-rational factors - rhetoric, symbols, traditions - that more often than not provide the real source of motivation. Drawing from both historical and philosophical sources Ajume H. Wingo demonstrates that these 'veils', as he calls them, can play an essential role in a thriving, stable liberal democratic state. This theory of veil politics furnishes a conceptual framework within which we can reassess the role of aesthetics in politics, the nature and function of political myths in liberal democracies, and the value of civic education.

Book Lifting the Veil of Mental Illness

Download or read book Lifting the Veil of Mental Illness written by William Bento and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2004 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental illnesses are too often seen only in abstract terms. In keeping with this, mainstream psychology, which seldom acknowledges the psyche or soul, relies increasingly on pharmaceutical treatment. In his unique approach to anthroposophical psychology (or "psychosophy"), William Bento views imbalances of the human soul in an experiential and human way. Basing his views on the work of Rudolf Steiner, Bento looks not only at the human body, soul, and spirit, but also at the way the whole environment of physical phenomena, life forces, and spirit beings affects us as individuals. Going well beyond our immediate, earthly surroundings, the author considers the cosmic effects of sun, planets and stars, offering a holistic view of the human soul. This book is a valuable and accessible addition to the field of anthroposophical psychology and to the study of Spiritual Science in general.

Book Tearing the Veil RLE Feminist Theory

Download or read book Tearing the Veil RLE Feminist Theory written by Susan Lipschitz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This a collection of essays about women, by women, which examine the production of femininity within a patriarchal society. The essays show that characteristics generally considered to be ‘feminine’ are in fact cultural constructions within a patriarchal order. The patriarchal culture is taken by us to be a system of meanings, as well as power relations, which pervades our view of women at both a conscious and an unconscious level. The symbolism of the rituals, myths, art works and polemics examined in the essays is related to the ways women are psychically constructed and constrained by the dominant heterosexual order. The Mother, the Witch, the Whore, the Pure Woman, the Amazon and the Free Woman are considered and the contributors make extensive use of original source material to give force to the argument that the stereotypic view of a feminine woman as naturally and inevitably weak, passive and powerless is one that can be seriously challenged.
