Book The The Vegetable Or from President to Postman

Download or read book The The Vegetable Or from President to Postman written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vegetable; Or, From President to Postman is F. Scott Fitzgerald’s only play. The 1923 comedy is a political satire in which the ironic stage directions excel. Jerry Frost has always aspired to become a postman. He feels trapped in his marriage and blames his overly-critical wife, Charlotte, for never having achieved his dreams. Charlotte claims that if Jerry had any real drive, he would pursue the presidency. Following an evening of very heavy drinking, Jerry dreams that he is the President, and begins to question what he truly wants in life. “Any man who doesn’t want to get on in the world, to make a million dollars, and maybe even park his toothbrush in the White House, hasn’t got as much to him as a good dog has – he’s nothing more or less than a vegetable.” The Vegetable explores the idea of the everyman becoming President. Fitzgerald addresses themes of aspiration and life’s meaning, presenting the argument that so long as you are following your dreams, you are doing enough. The political satire reads better than it translates to the stage due to Fitzgerald’s humorous stage directions. Best known for his novels and short stories that encapsulate the Jazz Age, Fitzgerald displays a new side to his writing, with his sharp wit being highlighted in this 1923 play. Read & Co. Classics has republished The Vegetable; Or, From President to Postman in a brand new edition, featuring a specially-commissioned biography of the writer and an introductory essay on Jazz Age literature. The perfect volume for fans of Fitzgerald who wish to read more of his lesser-known work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOT FOR SALE IN THE U.S. An oddity in F. Scott Fitzgerald's career, his play 'The Vegetable' was a satirical attack on the presidency of Warren Harding. An ordinary, incompetent man, taunted for his lack of ambition by his family, realises his dream of ruling the United States of America. One biographer described it as "inspired by the pervasive stupidity, gross cronyism and rampant corruption [of the] administration of the philistine president". With appalling timing, the play was first staged just after Harding's sudden death, when the mood of national mourning meant that few were ready for a savage indictment of the dead president. It closed after one week. Bootleggers, political machinations, romance and a man on the run combine in this bizarre story from the side of of Fitzgerald which wrote 'The Diamond as Big as the Ritz'. Out of print for decades, The Vegetable is a strange and significant work by one of the Twentieth Century's greatest writers.

Book excerpt: This is the "living" room of Jerry Frost's house. It is even-ing. The room (and, by implication, the house) is small and stuffy-it's an awful bother to raise these old-fashioned win-dows; some of them stick, and besides it's extravagant to let in much cold air, here in the middle of March. I can't say much for the furniture, either. Some of it's instalment stuff, imitation leather with the grain painted on as an after-effect, and some of it's dingily, depressingly old. That bookcase held "Ben Hur" when it was a best-seller, and it's now trying to digest "A Li-brary of the World's Best Literature" and the "Wit and Humor of the United States in Six Volumes." That couch would be dangerous to sit upon without a map showing the location of all craters, hillocks, and thistle-patches. And three dead but shame-fully unburied clocks stare eyelessly before them from their perches around the walls.

Download or read book The 1920s are often called the Jazz Age To what extent did the novels and the lifestyle of F Scott Fitzgerald reflect or define this label written by Yvette Denner and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-05-31 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics - English - Applied Geography, grade: 80%, University of New South Wales, Sydney (School of History and Philosophy), course: Introduction to Americas Studies, language: English, abstract: In her book on American culture in the 1920s, Lynn Dumenil mentions that a key image of the period was leading “a fast life, propelled by riches and rapidly changing social values” (Dumenil 1995: 7). This is not entirely true. In fact, the 1920s, also known as the “Jazz Age” were a decade of contradiction: there was progress and prosperity on the one hand and depression and isolation on the other. The women’s suffrage and the Prohibition Act both passed in 1919 are somehow a characteristic introduction to the following ten years of contradiction in American history. One of the decade’s best known writers, F. Scott Fitzgerald, born on 24 September 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota, celebrated his breakthrough after the release of his first novel This Side of Paradise in 1920 (Bruccoli 1981:13). His success literally came overnight and from then on his life changed completely (Allen 1931:90). Even though he was part of the fun generation which was so typical of the 1920s, he also embodied the characteristics of a moralist (Boyer 2009: 546). Fitzgerald’s life had been coined by ups and downs and by the end of the 1920s he caused his own downfall. Considering historical as well as biographical background information, this essay will provide an answer to the following question: To what extent did the novels and the lifestyle of F. Scott Fitzgerald reflect or define the Jazz Age?

Download or read book My Remarkable Uncle written by Stephen Leacock and published by New Canadian Library. This book was released on 2010-08-03 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This celebrated collection of sketches sparkles with Stephen Leacock’s humour and shines with the warmth of his wit. The comical E.P., star of the title essay, “My Remarkable Uncle,” is a classic Leacock character. He is president of a railway with a letterhead but no rails, and he heads a bank that boasts credit but no cash whatsoever – all of which trouble E.P. not in the least. My Remarkable Uncle, a wonderful smorgasbord of mirth served up by a master of comedy, includes several essays, a short story, a political parable, and personal reflections on a dizzying array of subjects. Here, in rich abundance, are the inspired nonsense and the unerring eye for human folly that have made Stephen Leacock Canada’s most celebrated humorist.
