It is a work, Jaherefore, more sug gestive than exhaustive - its principal aim being to show the insufficiency of any physiological theory to explain the co-relation Of mind and brain. Book The Mind and the Brain The New Physics and Its Evolution The Forces of Nature Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mind and the Brain The New Physics and Its Evolution The Forces of Nature Classic Reprint written by Alfred Binet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind and the Brain; The New Physics and Its Evolution; The Forces of Nature During the last ten years so many works have ao cumulated in the domain of Physics, and so many new theories have been propounded, that those who follow with interest the progress of science, and even some professed scholars, absorbed as they are in their own special studies, find themselves at sea in a confusion more apparent than real. It has therefore occurred to me that it might be useful to write a book which, while avoiding too great insistence on purely technical details, should try to make known the general results at which physicists have lately arrived, and to indicate the direction and import which should be ascribed to those speculations on the constitution of matter, and the discussions on the nature of first principles, to which it has become, so to speak, the fashion of the present day to devote oneself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Human Mind: In Its Relations With the Brain and Nervous System My Dear Dr. Carpenter, - Whether I have regard to your eminent position as a man of science, to your special attainments as a physiologist, or to your private worth, I know of no one to whom I can inscribe this little work with so much propriety and with such gratification to my own feelings, as to yourself. Although, in the course of independent thought, I have been led to conclusions not altogether in unison with some of those at which you have yourself arrived, I am not the less conscious that I am indebted to you and to your writings for most of the fundamental doctrines expounded in the ensuing pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theory of Mind The theory presented to the public in the following pages is intended to meet a definite need in the present state of human knowledge. It has, namely, been the thought of many who have considered the progress of science, that the next great advance should take place in psychology, and that this advance should be the result of a clarification of that field, chiefly by the modern science of biology. Nevertheless, up to the present time, biology has had an extraordinarily slight influence in this direction, in spite of the ingenuity and talent of those who have labored for it. Biology and psychology still stand almost rigidly apart. But if it has become increasingly plain that the two sciences as they stand will not help each other much, it is scarcely less plain, upon consideration, that psychology is somehow at fault and must somehow be fundamentally broadened. The theory of the instincts here proposed is intended to meet this situation - to show what the fundamental misconception has been, and, in so doing, to break the deadlock and allow the sciences to come together. If it does this (and, if accepted, it seems clear that it does) it opens the way for solid and important advances and discoveries - which, I trust, we shall soon see. Book excerpt: Presenting some modern views on the problem of the nature of mind and its relationship to the brain, this book, published in 1965, brings together contributors from various disciplines which are affected by this issue. Coming from different philosophical outlooks as well as subjects, these contributors also comment on each other's' chapters with a view of developing thought on the approaches to the problem. The theory of mind-brain relationship is vital to human interest and has been in debate throughout western thought over centuries, split mainly into dualist and monistic theories. These discussions had and still have wide impact philosophy, psychology, religion and cosmology, among other areas.
