Book The Haskins Society Journal 26

Download or read book The Haskins Society Journal 26 written by Laura L. Gathagan and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays here consider a broad range of topics focused around the early to central Middle Ages. These include a fascinating glimpse of the controversy surrounding Theodoric of Ostrogoth's identity as a builder king; evidence of Byzantine slavery that emerges from a ninth-century Frankish exegetical tract; conciliar prohibitions against interfaith dining; and a fresh look at the doomed Danish marriage of Philip II of France. The Journal's commitment to source analysis is continued with chapters examining female authority on the coins of Henry the Lion; the use and meaning of monastic depredation lists; and the relationship between Henry of Huntingdon and Robert of Torigni. In this issue, Wales provides a particular focus, with considerations of the use and manipulation of English annalistic sources by Welsh chroniclers, a close reading of the Brut y Tywysogion, and a survey of the dynamic interactions and the sometimes unexpected political frameworks of Welsh and Anglo-Saxon kings. Contributors: Shane Bobrycki, Gregory I. Halfond, Thomas Heeboll-Hom, Georgia Henley, Jitske Jasperse, Simon Keynes, Cristina La Rocca, Corinna Matlis, Benjamin Pohl, Thomas Roche, Owain Wyn Jones

Boethius composed the masterpiece while imprisoned and awaiting the death sentence for treason. The Christian author had served as a high-ranking government official before falling out of favor with Roman Emperor Theodoric, an Arian. In the Consolation, Boethius explores the true end of life-knowledge of God-through a conversation with Lady Philosophy. Part prose, part poetry, the work combines Greek philosophy and Christian faith to formulate answers to some of life's most difficult and enduring questions.

Book The Letters of Cassiodorus

Download or read book The Letters of Cassiodorus written by Cassiodorus Cassiodorus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Cassiodorus: Being a Condensed Translation of the Variae Epistolae of Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus Senator, With an Introduction It will be seen that I only profess to give an abstract, not a full translation of the letters. There is so much repetition and such a lavish expenditure of words in the writings of Cassiodorus, that they lend themselves very readily to the work of the abbreviator. Of course the longer letters generally admit of greater relative reduction in quantity than the shorter ones, but I think it may be said that on an average the letters have lost at least half their bulk in my hands. On any important point the real student will of course refuse to accept my condensed rendering, and will go straight to the fountain-head. I hope, however, that even students may occasionally derive the same kind of assistance from my labours which an astronomer derives from the humble instrument called the finder in a great observatory. A few important letters have been translated, to the best of my ability, verbatim. In the not infrequent instances where I have been unable to extract any intelligible meaning, on grammatical principles, from the words of my author, I have put in the text the nearest approximation that I could discover to his meaning, and placed the unintelligible words in a note, hoping that my readers may be more fortunate in their interpretation than I have been.
