Book excerpt: Wildlife conservation in Australia owes much to the ideas of a controversial mathematics professor whose attention-grabbing actions made him at once famous and widely vilified. John Wamsley overcame childhood disadvantage and trauma to create first a private sanctuary called Warrawong, then Earth Sanctuaries Limited, the world’s first publicly listed company devoted solely to wildlife conservation. His company fell from a great height, but its influence has been enormous. This is the story of that enterprise and the man who founded it.
Download or read book The Edge of Extinction written by Jules Pretty and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Edge of Extinction, Jules Pretty explores life and change in a dozen environments and cultures across the world, taking us on a series of remarkable journeys through deserts, coasts, mountains, steppes, snowscapes, marshes, and farms to show that there are many different ways to live in cooperation with nature. From these accounts of people living close to the land and close to the edge emerge a larger story about sustainability and the future of the planet. Pretty addresses not only current threats to natural and cultural diversity but also the unsustainability of modern lifestyles typical of industrialized countries. In a very real sense, Pretty discovers, what we manage to preserve now may well save us later.Jules Pretty's travels take him among the Maori people along the coasts of the Pacific, into the mountains of China, and across petroglyph-rich deserts of Australia. He treks with nomads over the continent-wide steppes of Tuva in southern Siberia, walks and boats in the wildlife-rich inland swamps of southern Africa, and experiences the Arctic with ice fishermen in Finland. He explores the coasts and inland marshes of eastern England and Northern Ireland and accompanies Innu people across the taiga’s snowy forests and the lakes of the Labrador interior. Pretty concludes his global journey immersed in the discrete cultures and landscapes embedded within the American landscape: the small farms of the Amish, the swamps of the Cajuns in the deep South, and the deserts of California. The diverse people Pretty meets in The Edge of Extinction display deep pride in their relationships with the land and are only willing to join with the modern world on their own terms. By the examples they set, they offer valuable lessons for anyone seeking to find harmony in a world cracking under the pressures of apparently insatiable consumption patterns of the affluent.

Download or read book The Vanishing American Lawyer written by Thomas D. Morgan and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 4,000 lawyers lost their positions at major American law firms in 2008 and 2009. In The Vanishing American Lawyer, Professor Thomas Morgan discusses the legal profession and the need for both law students and lawyers to adapt to the needs and expectations of clients in the future. The world needs people who understand institutions that create laws and how to access those institutions' works, but lawyers are no longer part of a profession that is uniquely qualified to advise on a broad range of distinctly legal questions. Clients will need advisors who are more specialized than many lawyers are today and who have more expertise in non-legal issues. Many of today's lawyers do not have a special ability to provide such services. While American lawyers have been hesitant to change the ways they can improve upon meeting client needs, lawyers in other countries, notably Great Britain and Australia, have been better at adapting. Law schools must also recognize the world their students will face and prepare them to operate successfully within it. Professor Morgan warns that lawyers must adapt to new client needs and expectations. The term "professional" should be applied to individuals who deserve praise for skilled and selfless efforts, but this term may lead to occupational suicide if it becomes a justification for not seeing and adapting to the world ahead.

But Fiona, despite confiding her fear of her husband, refuses further help. After Fiona’s husband asks Cathy to sign his gun licence form days later, and then someone is killed with the gun, Cathy must sort through her suspicions and find out what’s been happening behind closed doors. Clinically Dead During a condolence call to medical secretary Sara Wiseman, Cathy finds it odd that Sara seems more upset about the recent suspicious death of her boss at the hospital than about the loss of her own mother to Alzheimer’s. But she’s far more alarmed when Sara’s husband says he suspects Sara was having an affair with the dead doctor—and fears that was the least of her transgressions . . . Lethal Resuscitation A medical conference becomes a murder scene when Cathy checks in at a country hotel for an advanced life support course—and the equipment meant for saving lives is instead used to kill a bad-tempered doctor. The Vanishing Patient Cathy is taken aback when an irate patient claims his ailing wife has been kidnapped by one of her colleagues using a false name. Is someone impersonating a doctor, or is Adam Steer delusional? But the more she looks into the bizarre story, the more she starts doubting her own sanity. Can she make sense of the events around her before everything spirals out of control?
