Book excerpt: This report presents recommendations on the following topics for consideration in finalizing the Vancouver Island Land Use Plan: locations for enhanced development zones (high intensity areas) and general management zones (general forestry areas); management objectives and strategies for key forest resources in the above zones; and refined management objectives and strategies for key forest resources in special management zones (low intensity areas). It also includes recommendations on management objectives for biodiversity conservation in the above zones, consistent with the regional landscape unit planning strategy being developed for the Island. The report begins with an introduction on the Land Use Plan and the planning project, the planning area, planning principles, and the planning process. It then introduces zoning concepts and describes zone categories, and recommends management directions for timber, watersheds, fish, wildlife, biodiversity, visual resources, recreation, tourism, cave/karst resources, and cultural heritage resources. The regional distribution and extent of the proposed new resource management zones are also outlined. Specific objectives and strategies are set out for each zone. Appendices include summaries of key results of resource impact assessments, a list of regionally significant wildlife species, and an alphabetical index of zone names and numbers.
