Book Changing Nature of Financial Intermediation and the Financial Crisis of 2007 09

Download or read book Changing Nature of Financial Intermediation and the Financial Crisis of 2007 09 written by Tobias Adrian and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand edition of a hard to find publication. The financial crisis of 2007-09 highlighted the changing role of financial institutions and the growing importance of the ¿shadow banking system,¿ which grew out of the securitization of assets and the integration of banking with capital market developments. In a market-based financial system, banking and capital market developments are inseparable, and funding conditions are tied closely to fluctuations in the leverage of market-based financial intermediaries. This report describes the changing nature of financial intermediation in the market-based financial system, charts the course of the recent financial crisis, and outlines the policy responses that have been implemented by the Fed. Reserve and other central banks. Charts and tables.

Book Pricing Policies of Financial Intermediaries

Download or read book Pricing Policies of Financial Intermediaries written by J. Dermine and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study is to develop a framework that will explain the behavior of financial intermediaries and, more precisely, their pricing policies. As financial intermediation is the business of financial assets and liabilities, use is made of concepts and models developed tradition ally in Finance and Economics to end up with recommendations not only for optimal choices of interest rates but also for proper regulation and more sensible accounting methods. Also, the econometric implications of deposit rates stickiness are examined and empirically tested on Belgian data. My debt to many people has been growing during these years and it is a great pleasure to print a text and have the opportunity to thank those who have been so helpful. First of all, let me thank Professor Jacques Dreze, my thesis director. I am grateful to Jacques for encouragments, guidance and so many stimulating discussions. I also thank the members of the Jury, Professors A. Jacquemin, A. Kervyn de Lettenhove, A. Lamfalussy, P. Reding and A. Siaens for comments on earlier drafts of the manuscript. Discussions with Professor P. Howitt while he was visiting the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics (C.O.R.E., Universite Catholique de Louvain) in 1979 have greatly contributed to my under standing of the economics of risk sharing between lenders and borrowers. Philippe Gille has been extremely helpful in carrying out the joint econometric estimation in Chapter Five and in suggesting a fine way to present the results.

Book The Role of Financial Intermediaries in Macroeconomics

Download or read book The Role of Financial Intermediaries in Macroeconomics written by James Ormonde Staveley-O'Carroll and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception, the Modigliani-Miller capital structure irrelevancy principle has limited researchers' interest in the role of financial intermediaries in macroeconomics. However, due to the spread of financial crises in emerging markets in the 1980s and 1990s, and the global financial collapse of 2008, the focus of much academic work has turned to rigorously modeling these entities. Chapter one surveys the past and current literature on all types of financial intermediaries (market makers, traditional banks, and hedge funds, among others) and discusses their role in dissemination of asymmetric information, real business cycle fluctuations, and financial crashes and contagion. In chapter two, I build a two-frequency sequential trade model which generates sharp endogenous asset price movements caused by slow dissemination of asymmetric information about economic fundamentals. The key mechanism used in the model employs a Glosten-Migrom market maker who gradually infers the value of the fundamental by trading with both uninformed and imperfectly informed agents. Information becomes "trapped" as purchases by the uninformed agent mask informative sales; a sudden price correction occurs as soon as the market maker discovers the true value of the fundamental. I also study the factors that influence the duration of the information dissemination process. In chapter three, I build a two-country DSGE model with multiple assets, incomplete markets, and an endogenous optimizing banking sector, that is capable of recreating some of the important trends and linkages observed in the financial data. International financial markets during the past several decades have been characterized by a significant rise in gross international equity flows, increased prominence of non-traditional financial institutions, and globalization of the banking sector. In particular, I demonstrate that financial liberalization leads to an increase in a country's gross international asset holdings and to a positive net equity position. Finally, the model lays the groundwork for addressing many of the global banking regulation issues (for example, capital requirements and bankruptcy resolutions) that are now emerging in the field of international finance.

Book Capital Markets and Financial Intermediation

Download or read book Capital Markets and Financial Intermediation written by Colin Mayer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-09-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial intermediation is currently a subject of active research on both sides of the Atlantic. The integration of European financial markets, in particular, highlights several important issues. In this volume, derived from a joint CEPR conference with the Fundacion Banco Bilbao Vizcaya (BBV), leading academics from Europe and North America review 'state-of-the-art' theories of banking and financial intermediation and discuss their policy implications. The principal focus is on the risks of increased competition, the appropriate regulation of banks, and the differences between Anglo-American and Continental European forms of financial markets. Relationship banking, stock markets and banks, banking and corporate control, financial intermediation in Eastern Europe, monetary policy and the banking system, and financial intermediation and growth are also discussed.

Book The UK financial system

Download or read book The UK financial system written by Mike Buckle and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK financial system, now in its fifth edition, provides an up-to-date discussion of the UK financial system and the changes affecting it. Throughout the world the nature and regulation of financial systems have changed dramatically following the global financial crisis. In this text the necessary underlying theory is introduced and a range of relevant statistics provided in each chapter to supplement the narrative. Coverage includes a critique of the UK financial institutions and markets, as well as regulation emanating both from within the UK and also from supranational bodies such as the Bank for International Settlements and the European Union. The discussion is based on both the underlying theory as well as the operating practices of the institutions and markets. Each supplemented by a comprehensive glossary, the book is subdivided into three main sections: financial institutions; financial markets; and the regulation of banks and other financial institutions. The book will be essential reading to lecturers and undergraduate students enrolled on courses in financial economics and banking.

Book In Finance Size Matters

Download or read book In Finance Size Matters written by Biaggio Bossone and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2002-06 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the relationship between production efficiency in financial intermediation and financial system size. The study predicts and tests for the existence of "systemic scale economies" (SSEs), whereby value-maximizing intermediaries operating in large systems are expected to have lower production costs and lower costs of risk absorption and reputation signaling than intermediaries operating in small systems. The study investigates different channels through which the SSEs work their effects through the intermediaries and estimates such effects using a large banking data panel. The study shows strongly supporting evidence in favor of SSEs. It also finds that the institutional environment, the risk environment, and market concentration affect significantly the production efficiency of financial intermediaries.

Book The Value of Financial Intermediaries

Download or read book The Value of Financial Intermediaries written by Ryan D. Flugum and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three essays regarding the value of various financial intermediaries in capital markets. In the first essay, we examine the value of hedge fund activists, conditional on a firm’s existing monitoring presence. Traditional corporate governance theory designates analysts and institutional investors as the primary external monitors of the firm, and therefore, hedge fund activists are more likely to add value when these forces are inadequate. Consistent with this hypothesis, in the two years following the arrival of a hedge fund activist, we find the greatest abnormal returns and changes in fundamentals to be taking place in low-monitored firms. In the second essay, we determine the impact that hedge fund activism has on the quality of analyst content and analyst ability. We find a preponderance of recommendations that move to or are reinstated at the Hold level following the arrival of a hedge fund activist. Furthermore, the predictive content of analyst recommendations and their ability to accurately forecast earnings is diminished in the presence of a hedge fund activist. Overall, the quality of the important functions of an analyst is reduced by the arrival of a hedge fund activist, questioning the degree of social good that Jensen and Meckling (1976) argue security analysts provide. In the third essay, I examine the profitability of analysts’ consensus recommendation level, conditional on a firm’s synchronicity. Roll (1988), and many others, conclude that low r-squared from standard factor models, sometimes called low synchronicity, coincides with a more efficient incorporation of firm-specific information into stock prices. Under this view, analyst recommendations issued to firms with low synchronicity should be more profitable, primarily because analysts disseminate firm-specific information. I find the consensus recommendation level of analysts to be more profitable for low synchronicity firms. Moreover, this enhanced profitability is present primarily in good economic times and only in the post Regulation Fair Disclosure time period.
