Book excerpt: This study looks at a culture within a culture focusing on military dependent high school students at risk of not completing high school, what occurs when the psychosocial stressors due to high mobility and other family dynamics impact adolescent children, and what role alternative education programs may play in mitigating educational challenges and family life stressors. A review of the literature speaks to the high mobility, academic challenges, and psychosocial stressors unique to military dependent populations, as well as the various alternative independent study models explored. Emphasizing student-centered appreciative inquiry, the study employs a qualitative embedded design within a single case study with a focus on the relationship between military dependent students at-risk for dropping out of high school and independent study alternative educational programs at multiple freestanding and traditional school campuses. Both students and teachers were interviewed. Additionally, students were asked to respond to three quick-write questions. Data supporting the self-perception of academic and psychosocial success from a student/teacher perspective were analyzed to look at changes in course completion, appropriate age/grade level remediation, tracking for timely graduation, post high school plans, changes in family dynamics, and changes in attitudes about school and self- worth.

The Committee on Educational Excellence and Testing Equity (CEETE) was formed to monitor the effects of education reform, particularly testing, on students at risk for academic failure because of poverty, lack of proficiency in English, disability, or membership in population subgroups that have been educationally disadvantaged. The committee recognizes the important potential benefits of standards-based reforms and of test results in revealing the impact of reform efforts on these students. The committee also recognizes the valuable role graduation tests can potentially play in making requirements concrete, in increasing the value of a diploma, and in motivating students and educators alike to work to higher standards. At the same time, educational testing is a complicated endeavor, that reality can fall far short of the model, and that testing cannot by itself provide the desired benefits. If testing is improperly used, it can have negative effects, such as encouraging school leaving, that can hit disadvantaged students hardest. The committee was concerned that the recent proliferation of high school exit examinations could have the unintended effect of increasing dropout rates among students whose rates are already far higher than the average, and has taken a close look at what is known about influences on dropout behavior and at the available data on dropouts and school completion.

Book excerpt: Although high school dropouts have been studied in-depth, there is a lack of information pertaining to individuals who dropout and re-enroll. In addition, there is no research on individuals that re-enroll through an independent study high school to attain a high school diploma. This study intended to answer 3 research questions: (a) what factors led high school dropouts to return to high school, (b) what factors led re-engaged youth to stay in school and graduate, and (c) what does an independent study provide re-engaged youths? This qualitative study utilized the interpretative phenomenological research design. This study was conducted with the self-efficacy theoretical framework as the foundation in the data analysis to understand the participants' experiences, as previous research proposes that an individual's self-efficacy influences academic motivation and the willingness to overcome obstacles. This study collected data from 2 independent study charter high schools in Southern California. 14 participants participated in this study with 11 participants coming from 1 high school and 3 from the other. The primary sources of data for this study included a Generalized Self-Efficacy questionnaire and a semi-structured interview protocol. Three significant findings emerged from the analysis of the participants' responses. First, understanding the value of a high school diploma motivated the participants to return to school and earn a high school diploma. Second, a strong and positive support system is essential in motivating and encouraging an individual to overcome challenges. Third, the school's environment, from the school's schedule to the school's atmosphere, the support a student receives, and school activities, are critical in in engaging students in their learning. The findings from this study can be utilized to when developing school policies or practices. Based on the results, students would benefit from educators that collaborate with the students in developing plans with clear, achievable goals for high school graduation and beyond. Students would benefit from a mentoring program as positive relationships with at least one caring adult are crucial in providing students someone who can support them as they face challenges. Finally, a school environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and engaging for all its students matters.

Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of an independent study-based curricular design as a means of recovering dropped out youth and preparing them to succeed in postsecondary settings. The study focused on a dropout recovery program located in a large, urban public school district. The program offered dropouts a reduced-credit, faster-track pathway to a high school diploma. The study utilized a success case study design in order to examine three sites within the program that were highly successful at graduating students, and one that performed below the program average. The goals of the study were to learn why some sites were outperforming others within the program at graduating students, and whether there were common best practices employed at the strong performing sites. Additionally, the study sought to ascertain the impact of the program on graduates who later pursued postsecondary educational offerings. Data were collected through interviews of staff and former graduates, site observations, as well as examinations of program documents. I compared data gathered at the success case sites and the underperforming site to identify commonalities between site practices and graduates' recollections of how the program impacted their academic trajectory. Chief among the findings were that staff at high performing sites within the program shared a core set of four common beliefs, out of which sprang a number of shared best practices. These beliefs and practices had arisen absent the influence of an overall programmatic design. In addition, the study found that the program had an extremely positive impact upon graduates. In particular, the program changed their views of education from highly negative to positive, and led to high levels of satisfaction in postsecondary settings, as well as high rates of persistence. My findings suggest that the implementation of independent study-based curriculum and reduced-credit pathways to a high school diploma should be examined carefully by school districts as a potentially highly successful means for addressing the nation's dropout crisis, but that care should be taken to ensure that program design and maintenance allows for top-tier performance.

Researchers and educators have identified and developed interventions to address this problem, including prevention programs within the schools to assist with academic and personal struggles, as well as career guidance programs designed to strengthen career development. Two such programs include the Success Center and DISCOVER, ACT's new internet version of its' career guidance program. Poor academic achievement has been identified as a main predictor for dropping out. Thus, the main purpose of this study was to evaluate the combined effect on academic achievement of both DISCOVER and career counseling with at-risk sophomores. Data were collected from 33 at-risk high school sophomores. Based on the analyses, there is statistical support that the number of credits earned by the students increased, supporting the use of the combined intervention in positively impacting the academic performance of at risk students. Another hypothesis was generated regarding the overall impact the Success Center has on increasing academic performance. Results give statistical support that students' overall GPA increased due to their participation in the Success Center. It is recommended that further research with a larger sample size be conducted to further explore these interventions and their impact on academic achievement and preventing high school dropouts.

Book excerpt: School dropout continues to be a societal and educational concern today. There are various eligibilities which identify students as being at risk for school dropout. This study uses the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002) and its definition of the term 'at risk' to explore the impacts of varying levels of risk, student self-beliefs, and the level of effort and persistence applied to academic tasks on level of educational attainment by age 26 in at-risk youth. ELS:2002 data is used to select the final study sample (n=4,002). The study demonstrates that the level of risk (i.e., number of at-risk factors identified for the student in grade 10) is disproportionate across socio-demographic categories, and that certain populations are more likely to be at higher risk during high school. Data show that the level of risk affects student self-beliefs. The study findings indicate that socio-demographic factors are good predictor variables for educational attainment. Study findings also indicate that both English self-efficacy and educational expectations have significant impact on attainment outcomes despite the presence of risk and thus could be helping those at higher risk to overcome their at-risk circumstances. Therefore, this study concludes that educators should be aware of the effects of varying levels of risk and student self-beliefs on attainment among at-risk youth. The study findings suggest that these might be important variables to consider when establishing and implementing policies and practices seeking to decrease the likelihood of school dropout and increase educational attainment among at-risk youth.
