Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written during and after my travel and studies in Eastern philosophy, where I lived and studied in an Ashram outside of New Delhi, India. I stayed awake one whole night watching the stars above which looked like you could reach out and touch them with your fingertips. I truly was "In The Valley of The Stars!" Thus the title of this book was born. The Eternal Flame represents the Eternal Light within each one of us. The Hubble pictures represent the Infinite Reality of God. I am grateful for both of my spiritual teachers for making this book possible. While in India my teacher read one of my letters I was sending home to my mother, and he wanted to have it published in the newspaper, but I wouldn't have it, so I hope this book makes up for it now.

Download or read book The Valley of Dying Stars written by J.D. Miller and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2003-05-10 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Valley of Dying Stars, we meet a new Private Investigator, Mark Christian. He is an ex-Marine, war hero, veteran of Desert Storm and Somalia, and self-confessed adrenaline junkie. A lover of jazz, antique motorcycles, and a gorgeous Irish girl named Aislinn, whose high level job with the government gives Mark entree into the world of the political and media elite. Lillian Jones' son has been murdered, and the local police can't solve the case. Desperate, she turns to Mark Christian for help. She's heard of his reputation. He's not like most Private Investigators, who spend their time slinking around outside motels taking pictures of people cheating. He gets hired for the rough stuff: executive protection and murder investigations. This case takes him from his home in the beautiful mountains of the Shenandoah to the underbelly of the vicious drug trade in inner city Washington D.C., the "murder capitol of the world." It is a nightmarish, surreal world of junkies, dealers, and hookers; a gritty, morally complex journey that pits this tough new P.I. against a drug kingpin and domestic terrorist. "The hero in this story is finely drawn, a carefully crafted jewel of contradictions. He has the toughness, courage and principals of Robert B. Parker's Spenser, but is ultimately more complex and conflicted. The story is moving and unforgettable with something for everyone: romance, searing, heart-stopping action, and an engaging mystery that has a shocking, surprise ending. But, what is also fantastic, is its basis in reality. Anyone who has worked in the inner city knows that the horrible places he writes about actually exist." Gregory Bearstop, MTS, LCADC, Author of Happiness That is Guaranteed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's influence wanes around the world as political turmoil in the U.S. fuels the growth of the brutal Islamic Caliphate. Over-extended intelligence assets tracking the global Islamist movement struggle to piece together random bits of information about a mysterious place in the Afghan mountains called the Valley of Stars. The Valley is a treasure trove of precious metals and gem stones that could fund global Islamic extremism for generations and ignites a race to secure it. The crisis forces Secretary of Defense Madeline Coltrain to fight a political war with her nemesis at State, and a shooting war with a drastically eroded military capability. Coltrain must walk a fine line between what's needed to meet the threat and what's constitutional as she stretches the boundaries of the President's directives. The race to the Valley of Stars violently erupts when Pakistani forces, led by a rogue General aligned with the Caliphate, collide with the severely outnumbered allied forces in the rugged Afghan mountains. As the battle for the Valley rages, a new set of leaders emerges from unlikely places. The allies, led by Lieutenant Colonel Abdul Qadir, a Shia, unique among Afghan officers, who commands unwavering loyalty from his mostly Sunni troops. Lieutenant Colonel DB Watkins, a highly decorated American commander with a reputation of building relations with local leaders. And Staff Sergeant Shirin Kirkorian, nicknamed "The Lioness," an intelligence asset and first female to complete Ranger training who balances deference to Islamic customs and culture with deadly efficient combat skills. They form a lethal triad to counter the savagery of the Islamist forces aligned against them.

Book excerpt: *Named one of Wall Street Journal's Best Books of 2015 *Selected as a Military Times's Best Book of the Year “You’re going up the Valley.” Black didn’t know its name, but he knew it lay deeper and higher than any other place Americans had ventured. You had to travel through a network of interlinked valleys, past all the other remote American outposts, just to get to its mouth. Everything about the place was myth and rumor, but one fact was clear: There were many valleys in the mountains of Afghanistan, and most were hard places where people died hard deaths. But there was only one Valley. It was the farthest, and the hardest, and the worst. When Black, a deskbound admin officer, is sent up the Valley to investigate a warning shot fired by a near-forgotten platoon, he can only see it as the final bureaucratic insult in a short and unhappy Army career. What he doesn’t know is that his investigation puts at risk the centuries-old arrangements that keep this violent land in fragile balance, and will launch a shattering personal odyssey of obsession and discovery as Black reckons with the platoon’s dark secrets, accumulated over endless hours fighting and dying in defense of an indefensible piece of land. The Valley is a riveting tour de force that changes our understanding of the men who fight our wars and announces John Renehan as one of the great American storytellers of our time.

Book excerpt: The dramatic and uplifting story of legendary outdoorsman and conservationist John Muir’s journey to become the man who saved Yosemite—from the author of the bestselling Skeletons on the Zahara: A True Story of Survival. In June of 1889 in San Francisco, John Muir—iconic environmentalist, writer, and philosopher—meets face-to-face for the first time with his longtime editor Robert Underwood Johnson, an elegant and influential figure at The Century magazine. Before long, the pair, opposites in many ways, decide to venture to Yosemite Valley, the magnificent site where twenty years earlier, Muir experienced a personal and spiritual awakening that would set the course of the rest of his life. Upon their arrival the men are confronted with a shocking vision, as predatory mining, tourism, and logging industries have plundered and defaced “the grandest of all the special temples of Nature.” While Muir is consumed by grief, Johnson, a champion of society’s most pressing debates via the pages of the nation’s most prestigious magazine, decides that he and Muir must fight back. The pact they form marks a watershed moment, leading to the creation of Yosemite National Park, and launching an environmental battle that captivates the nation and ushers in the beginning of the American environmental movement. Beautifully rendered, deeply researched, and inspiring, Guardians of the Valley is a moving story of friendship, the written word, and the transformative power of nature. It is also a timely and powerful “origin story” as the toweringly complex environmental challenges we face today become increasingly urgent.
