Book Guardians of the Valley

Download or read book Guardians of the Valley written by Dean King and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * “We see through this book the immense power of language…to change the minds of lawmakers and tourists alike.” —The New York Times Book Review * “A poignant portrait of an era when mere words could change the world.” —San Francisco Chronicle * The dramatic and uplifting story of legendary outdoorsman and conservationist John Muir’s journey to save Yosemite is “a rich, enjoyable excursion into a seminal period in environmental history” (The Wall Street Journal). In June of 1889 in San Francisco, John Muir—iconic environmentalist, writer, and philosopher—meets face-to-face for the first time with his longtime editor Robert Underwood Johnson, an elegant and influential figure at The Century magazine. Before long, the pair, opposites in many ways, decide to venture to Yosemite Valley, the magnificent site where twenty years earlier, Muir experienced a personal and spiritual awakening that would set the course of the rest of his life. Upon their arrival the men are confronted with a shocking vision, as predatory mining, tourism, and logging industries have plundered and defaced “the grandest of all the special temples of Nature.” While Muir is devastated, Johnson, an arbiter of the era’s pressing issues in the pages of the nation’s most prestigious magazine, decides that he and Muir must fight back. The pact they form marks a watershed moment, leading to the creation of Yosemite National Park, and launching an environmental battle that captivates the nation and ushers in the beginning of the American environmental movement. “Comprehensively researched and compellingly readable” (Booklist, starred review), Guardians of the Valley is a moving story of friendship, the written word, and the transformative power of nature. It is also a timely and powerful “origin story” as the towering environmental challenges we face today become increasingly urgent.

Book A Barrel of Laughs A Vale of Tears

Download or read book A Barrel of Laughs A Vale of Tears written by Jules Feiffer and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 1998-03-07 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Prince Roger sets out eagerly on a quest and finds a few adventures, a lot of friends, a damsel or two in distress (not!) and himself, in the end. A ‘carrier of joy’ whose mere presence causes everyone to laugh uncontrollably, Roger finds cruelty and kindness equally amusing, and expects his quest to be a lark. It’s anything but: As Roger passes through the Forever Forest, nearly starves at the Dastardly Divide, sees people at their worst in the Valley of Vengeance, and temporarily despairs in the Mountains of Malice, he sobers up, learns to care for others, becomes an expert peacemaker, does Good Deeds, and falls in love with Lady Sadie, who says what she thinks as she repeatedly saves his bacon.’—K. ‘Feiffer’s worldly-wise, confiding tone and sense of the absurd are highly congenial, and the drawings are a vintage Feiffer delight.’—Publishers Weekly. 100 Books for Reading and Sharing 1995 (NY Public Library)

Book excerpt: At the age of thirty-one, I sat and watched the fabric of my life unravel. There was a strain on the center of the material and the fabric began to cave. The fabric of my life appeared to be woven into a beautiful pattern; the pattern was full of vibrant colors and strong fibers. Fibers built from traditional patterns of religion, hard work and education. My experiences and choices in life made the fabric appear strong. Appearances can be deceiving! However, generally reveal a snippet of real elements.Everything I built my world on had to be questioned: "What do you believe? And Why?"At the center of my unraveling, I was asked one question: "Who Do You Say That I AM?"The very detailed and painful process of truly looking at the fabric of my life was necessary for truth and faith. Developing and standing on a position or behavior is not powerful without understanding. The antagonist in my story may look like cancer, but I challenge you to take a closer look. Let us look at the phases of breaking apart ANY challenge, ANY trial, and ANY misunderstanding. Deconstruction, Ascension, and Manifestation.Let us make our fabric stronger with the thread of truth. Let's pass from lower levels of understanding to enlightenment (Our ability to see our lives in totality) and grow from strength to strength in God.

Book excerpt: You are not alone. How many times have you had such unbearable pain in your life that you just wanted your life to stop? You did not want to take another breath or even another step. When Life's burdens and fears have weighed you down until you feel you cannot breath, as if elephants are sitting on your chest. You beg God to make it stop and please make it stop now, Lord. You have done everything except to give up. Everyday is a deeper valley and you don't see any end in sight. You're tired of looking for answers and find yourself almost cursing the Lord for not taking the pain from your heart and body. You wonder if anyone is listening up there because of the silence. You have pushed away people for your own safety and lost dear family and friends from being so down and negative. Stop and read this book. The purpose in which I wrote "Tears On My Bible" is exaclty what it says. I spent hours upon hours of sitting in the floor reading through the Bible looking for any type of peace and answers to all of my "Why Lord questions. I mostly memorized verse's in Psalms, but I still felt alone. It is odd when you are on your mountains there are so many people around you, but wait until you are in the depths of the valley. When you look around while in the presence of the valley, that is what reveals who is really sticking with you and loves you. Let my tears fill the void in in your life and please realize you are never alone. That is God's promise. You have to get quiet and shut off the world then God's voice can be heard. Remember, his messages may come in several ways. It could be by hearing his voice, or hearing from one of his Messengers, or by reading a book. I am a Messenger from God sharing my tear stained lessons and letting you know you will always be okay. Don't give up, give in and close your mouth and open your ears. Join me as I relive my path lessons with the Lord. I am a voice that should not be alive to tell these true stories. I was never alone and neither are you.

Book excerpt: To what genius fed on tears shall we some day owe that most touching of all elegies,--the tale of tortures borne silently by souls whose tender roots find stony ground in the domestic soil, whose earliest buds are torn apart by rancorous hands, whose flowers are touched by frost at the moment of their blossoming? What poet will sing the sorrows of the child whose lips must suck a bitter breast, whose smiles are checked by the cruel fire of a stern eye?
