The site proved to be the largest undisturbed tomb ever found in Egypt, as there were found the intact burials of 153 individuals that lived under the 21st Dynasty (ca. 1069-945 BC). This outstanding find was subsequently divided in lots of antiquities and dispersed by 17 nations. This volume presents the first comprehensive publication of the Italian Lot, kept in the Egyptian Museum of Florence. Book excerpt: Volume 2 in the series "The Asyut Project" presents the contributions of an international conference held at Sohag University after the first seven seasons of Egyptian-German cooperation in archaeological fieldwork in the necropolis of Asyut, Middle Egypt. The volume is edited by scholars of the three Egyptological institutions involved in the project, the Universities of Berlin (Freie Universitat), Sohag and Mainz. The first article gives an overview of the present state of knowledge of the historical background of Asyut, the different functions of the western mountain (Gebel Asyut al-gharbi), and its architectural structures from Egyptian Old Kingdom to Late Antiquity and partially Islamic Period. It is followed by a study on the succession of the First Intermediate Period/ Middle Kingdom local ruling elite (the so-called nomarchs) which reconstructs the eventful history of these eras. Special contributions are devoted to wooden models and offering plates as grave goods, hieratic visitors' graffiti, methods of epigraphy, reconstruction of tomb architecture, and Islamic pottery. In addition, analyses of the anthropological and botanical finds are presented. All articles are written in English and provided with an Arabic abstract. The plates include, among others, a systematic documentation of the investigated tombs.

Book excerpt: The composition, which the editors entitle the "Book of Thoth", is preserved on over forty Graeco-Roman Period papyri from collections in Berlin, Copenhagen, Florence, New Haven, Paris, and Vienna. The central witness is a papyrus of fifteen columns in the Berlin Museum. Written almost entirely in the Demotic script, the Book of Thoth is probably the product of scribes of the "House of Life", the temple scriptorium. It comprises largely a dialogue between a deity, usually called "He-who-praises-knowledge" (presumably Thoth himself) and a mortal, "He-who-loves-knowledge". The work covers such topics as the scribal craft, sacred geography, the underworld, wisdom, prophecy, animal knowledge, and temple ritual. Particularly remarkable is one section (the "Vulture Text") in which each of the 42 nomes of Egypt is identified with a vulture. The language is poetic; the lines are often clearly organized into verses. The subject-matter, dialogue structure, and striking phraseology raise many issues of scholarly interest; especially intriguing are the possible connections between this Egyptian work, in which Thoth is called "thrice-great", and the classical Hermetic Corpus, in which Hermes Trismegistos plays the key role. The first volume comprises interpretative essays, discussion of specific points such as the manuscript tradition, script, and language. The core of the publication is the transliteration of the Demotic text, translation, and commentary. A consecutive translation, glossary, bibliography, and indices conclude the first volume. The second volume contains photographs of the papyri, almost all of which reproduce their original size.

To avoid this irksome duty they devised the shabti, a figurine which they hoped would deputise for them on being activated by the appropriate magic spell. If the idea smacks of 'draft-dodging', the figures are nevertheless of considerable artistic interest, and provide information about Egyptian religion, society, personal names, titles, etc. The motivation and development are discussed from the first appearance of shabtis during the Middle Kingdom until their decline in the Ptolemaic Period. The iconography, inscriptions, materials and manufacture are described with criteria for identifying and dating the various types. A concise up-to-date treatment in English has long been lacking, and this account will be useful to students, art historians, collectors and others.
