The question arises, then, regarding whether managerial processes developed for one specific location can be transferred to another and whether they should be changed or remain unchanged during transition. (Hunter 1999) A series of cross-cultural research has been undertaken during the last few decades suggesting that certain management styles or business techniques may be incompatible because of cultural differences. The following essay discusses the usefulness of such models in managing international business. It focuses on the main 'gurus' which have developed the principal models of cross-cultural research including Geert Hofstede as well as Fons Trompenaars. At the end the essay Richard D. Lewis, widely acclaimed author of 'When cultures collide' and his views on national cultures will be discussed.

Moreover, the process of globalization causes more exposure to diversity, not only in daily but also in business life. Managing diversity has therefore become a strategic focus of management in organizations which enables companies to gain competitive advantages on the global market. With increasing relevance of the outlined issue several frameworks for categorizing, analyzing and comparing cultures can be found in literature. Two frameworks that have received a great deal of research attention are Hofstede’s study of work values and Trompenaars’ broad-based studies of value orientations. This paper provides an insight into the existing conventional culture paradigms by giving a brief introduction to the term culture and exposing the two mentioned models. Subsequently, the last chapter outlines possible implications for managing intercultural differences in business contexts.

All cases approach culture in CCM beyond national cultures, and all examine power as an integrative part of any cross-cultural situation. The cases also consider diversity in the sense of culturally or historically learned categorizations of difference (such as gender, race, ethnicity, religion and class), and acknowledge how diversity categories might differ across cultures. Furthermore, each case suggests a specific method or concept for improving upon the situation. Out of this approach, novel insights emerge: we can see how culture, power and diversity categories are inseparable, and we can understand how exactly this is the case. The uses and benefits of this book are thus both conceptual and methodological; they emerge at the intersections of Critical CCM and diversity studies. All cases also discuss implications for practitioners and are suitable for teaching. Mainstream CCM often limits itself to comparative models or cultural dimensions. This approach is widely critiqued for its simplicity but is equally used for the exact same reason. Often, academics teach this approach whilst cautioning students against implementing it, and this might be simply due to a lack of alternatives. Through means of rich empirical cases, this book offers such an alternative. Considering the intersections of culture, diversity and power enables students, researchers and practitioners alike to see ‘more’ or ‘different’ things in the situation, and then come up with novel approaches and solutions that do justice to the realities of culture and diversity in today’s (and the future's) management and organizations. The chapters of this book thus offer concepts and methods to approach cross-cultural situations: the conceptual gain lies in bringing together CCM and (critical) diversity studies in an easily accessible manner. As a methodological contribution, the cases in this book offer the concise tools and methods for implementing an intersectional approach to culture.

This is due to the fact that the paradigms, approaches, and methods used so far to study culture have been limited in their scope. For several decades now, approaches that consider national cultures and geo-ethnic origins of interacting individuals have dominated management literature. This book distinguishes itself from other books on Culture in International Business (CIB) studies in two important ways. First, it illustrates how Mary Douglas’s Cultural Theory framework (referred to commonly as DCF) can be used to explore different aspects of international business. This sets the stage for future scholars to consider DCF as an alternative tool of cultural sense-making as opposed to limiting themselves to categorical frameworks grounded in static notions of national and/or corporate culture. The second unique feature is that it focuses on the complexities of the applied side of culture (i.e., it takes a culture-in-practice perspective), while simultaneously emphasizing the dynamicity and diversity of culture. The book concludes by offering suggestions for the future of CIB studies. This domain, it predicts, may witness significant changes in the way culture is seen as influencing workplace relations.
