Book excerpt: Milton S. Terry (1840-1914) was an Old Testament and hermeneutics scholar. This work is a preterist commentary on the Apocalypse (i.e., the Book of Revelation), which is the most Old Testament-oriented work in the New Testament. By frequently accessing Revelation's Old Testament backdrop, Terry provides a bull commentary that demonstrates that Revelation is a prophecy focusing on the coming destruction Jewish Temple in AD 70. Though he sees a portion of the last three chapters as touching on the future which was distant from the Apostle John's time, he sees Revelation's main concern as explaining the completion of the old covenant order in the establishing of the new covenant.

Book The High King of Heaven

Download or read book The High King of Heaven written by Dean Davis and published by . This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most sweeping and comprehensive book on eschatology that I've ever encountered. The scope of this book is simply breathtaking." -Dr. Sam Storms For the last 150 years the evangelical world has been embroiled in a Great Debate about eschatology, about the true biblical picture of God's ultimate purpose for the universe, life, and man. Much of the debate swirls around the Kingdom of God: What is its exact nature? In how many stages does it enter history? How shall we interpret the Old Testament prophecies of the Kingdom--literally (in terms of Israel) or figuratively (in terms of the Church)? There is also controversy about the Consummation: Prior to the Lord's return, will our world get better and better, or worse and worse? Will he return once, twice, or even three times? When He comes again, will it be before the Millennium or after? How many resurrections should we expect? How many judgments? What will the universe be like when God finally creates the new heavens and the new earth? This book was written in the conviction that the High King of heaven has given his people certain master keys by which they may know the answers to all these questions, and therefore be fully prepared for the awesome consummation of all things. In it, pastor and author Dean Davis seeks to place those keys in our hands, so that we may behold afresh the simplicity and glory of our Blessed Hope, and thereby resolve, once and for all, the Great End Time Debate.

  • Pages : 238 pages

Download or read book Jesus as the Pierced One written by Bret A. Rogers and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can John use Zech 12:10 to explain both Jesus' first coming in humility (John 19:37) and Jesus' second coming in glory (Rev 1:7)? In this book, Rogers demonstrates how God's self-revelation in Jesus provides the key for understanding the fulfillment of Zech 12:10 in light of both John's high Christology and John's inaugurated and consummated eschatology. In contrast to previous approaches, Rogers proposes that John interprets Zech 12:10 not simply along a human, messianic axiom, but along a divine, messianic axiom. Moreover, by treating Zech 12:10, John 19:37, and Rev 1:7 in a single study, readers will better understand the unified narrative spanning the Testaments, the nature of Jesus' divine identity and mission in John's writings, and how Jesus' divine nature and mission compels the church to live between his two advents.

As such, it offers the reader a significantly different approach to this enigmatic text than that offered by most contemporary commentaries. Working directly from the Greek text, Smalley offers a masterful analysis of the critical and literary dimensions of the Apocalypse for students and scholars alike. Contents include an in-depth, critical analysis of the Greek text of Revelation a wealth of scholarly interaction with other commentaries and interpretations of Revelation a canonical assessment of Revelation in light of other Johannine texts a historical understanding of Revelation in the context of the Johannine community an interpretation of Revelation as cosmic drama Here is a fresh contribution to the scholarly study of this captivating but often perplexing book of the Bible. Smalley demonstrates that the Apocalypse speaks directly to any situation in any age and offers a portrait of God's loving justice that is relevant to our own society.

Book Plowshares Pruning Hooks

Download or read book Plowshares Pruning Hooks written by Brent Sandy and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are we to make of Isaiah's image of Mount Zion as the highest of the mountains, or Zechariah's picture of the Mount of Olives split in two, or Daniel's "beast rising out of the sea" or Revelation's "great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns"? How can Peter claim that on the day of Pentecost the prophecy of Joel was being fulfilled, with signs in heaven and wonders on earth, the sun turned to darkness and the moon to blood? The language and imagery of biblical prophecy has been the source of puzzlement for many Christians and a point of dispute for some. How ironic that is! For the prophets and seers were the wordsmiths of their time. They took pains to speak God's word clearly and effectively to their contemporaries. How should we, as citizens of the twenty-first century, understand the imagery of this ancient biblical literature? Are there any clues in the texts themselves, any principles we can apply as we read these important but puzzling biblical texts? D. Brent Sandy carefully considers the language and imagery of prophecy and apocalyptic, how it is used, how it is fulfilled within Scripture, and how we should read it against the horizon of our future. Clearly and engagingly written, Plowshares and Pruning Hooks is the kind of book that gives its readers a new vantage point from which to view the landscape of prophetic and apocalyptic language and imagery.

Book The Promise of the Future

Download or read book The Promise of the Future written by Cornelis P. Venema and published by Banner of Truth. This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though we can never, in our time-bound state, know the future in detail, God in his mercy has not left us in complete ignorance of what is to come. His revelation in Holy Scripture has cast a flood of light on what would otherwise remain an impenetrable mystery. Even among those who accept the Bible's authority, however, there has never been complete agreement on what Scripture teaches in this area. This major new examination of biblical teaching on the future of the individual, of the church and of the universe as a whole will be useful both to theological students and to informed non-specialists. Ranging over the whole field, it interacts extensively with recent literature on disputed issues, such as the nature of the intermediate state, the millennium of Revelation 20 and the doctrine of eternal punishment, always seeking to answer the fundamental question: 'What do the Scriptures teach?' The Christ-centered nature of biblical teaching on the future is emphasized, as is the importance of the church's historic confessions for an understanding of eschatology. The chief note sounded is one of hope: 'God's people eagerly await Christ's return because it promises the completion of God's work of redemption. The future is bright because it is full of promise, the promise of God's Word.' - Jacket flap.

Book Jesus and the Victory of God reissue

Download or read book Jesus and the Victory of God reissue written by N. T. Wright and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 1046 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly anticipated volume, N. T. Wright focuses directly on the historical Jesus: Who was he? What did he say? And what did he mean by it? Wright begins by showing how the questions posed by Albert Schweitzer a century ago remain central today. Then he sketches a profile of Jesus in terms of his prophetic praxis, his subversive stories, the symbols by which he reordered his world, and the answers he gave to the key questions that any world view must address. The examination of Jesus' aims and beliefs, argued on the basis of Jesus' actions and their accompanying riddles, is sure to stimulate heated response. Wright offers a provocative portrait of Jesus as Israel's Messiah who would share and bear the fate of the nation and would embody the long-promised return of Israel's God to Zion.

Book Zechariah 9 14

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul L. Redditt
  • Publisher : Kohlhammer Verlag
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 9783170216518
  • Pages : 167 pages

Download or read book Zechariah 9 14 written by Paul L. Redditt and published by Kohlhammer Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It will be argued that Zechariah 9-14 consists of four collections of traditional eschatological hope (9:1-17; 10:3b-12; 12:1-4a, 5, 8-9; and 14:1-13, 14b-21). Of the collections, the first three included hopes vital during the first half of the Persian period. The fourth collection (chapter 14) seems to have arisen later than the other three (though still before the time of Nehemiah) and expressed much more pessimism. These variations were then supplemented by a collection (12:6-7; 12:10-13:6) that is pro-Judean vis-a-vis Jerusalem and by the shepherd materials, which contradict the hopes of the first two collections. This final stage probably arose after the time of Nehemiah, i. e. after the city grew strong enough to raise the ire of Judeans outside the power structure. It is plausible to conclude, therefore, that the redactor of Zechariah 9-14 assembled the four collections and revised them by means of the supplements in 12:6-7, 12:10-13:6 and the shepherd materials.
