Book Characterization of Powders and Aerosols

Download or read book Characterization of Powders and Aerosols written by Brian H. Kaye and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characterization of fine particles is a difficult task! A large number of industries deal with materials in powder form. The properties of these powders depend on their particle size, particle shape and size distributions, surface and porosity. What are the methods? What are the problems? What questions need answering? This new book covers the problems of sampling both powders and aerosols, and discusses calibration standards for different instruments. It takes into account fractionating methods for fine particles, e.g., sieving procedures, sedimentation methods, and the use of cyclones. Image analysis and its use for the measurement of the size and shape of powder grains and light-diffraction techniques for size evaluation are presented. Furthermore, this books covers the most effective methods for measuring surface areas, fractal structures of rough surfaces, and pore structures of porous bodies. Practitioners will find tips for modification of analytical procedures for on-line characterization, and many graphs for comparing data obtained by different methods are presented.

Book Particle size measurement

Download or read book Particle size measurement written by Terence Allen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although man's environment, from the interstellar dust to the earth beneath his feet, is composed to a large extent of finely divided material, his knowledge of the propert ies of such materials is surprisingly slight. For many years the scientist has accepted that matter may exist as solids, liquids or gases although the dividing line between the states may often be rather blurred; this classification has been upset by powders, which at rest are solids, when aerated may behave as liquids, and when suspended in gases take on some of the properties of gases. It is now widely recognized that powder technology is a field of study in its own right. The industrial applications of this new science are far reaching. The size of fine particles affects the properties of a powder in many important ways. For example, it determines the setting time of cement, the hiding power of pigments and the activity of chemical catalysts; the taste of food, the potency of drugs and the sintering shrink age of metallurgical powders are also strongly affected by the size of the particles of which the powder is made up. Particle size measurement is to powder technology as thermometry is to the study of heat and is in the same state of flux as thermometry was in its early days. Only in the case of a sphere can the size of a particle be completely described by one number.

Book Ultrasonics International 93

Download or read book Ultrasonics International 93 written by Sam Stuart and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasonics International 93: Conference Proceedings presents a comprehensive account of the presentations given in the Ultrasonics International 93 conference. It discusses a blood flow mapping system using ultrasonic waves. It addresses the dynamical response functions of elastically anisotropic solids. Some of the topics covered in the book are the ultrasonic waves propagation in a liquid producing radicals; ultrasonic characterization of interfaces; surface acoustic wave measurements; line-focus-beam acoustic microscopy; investigation of fatigue cracks in steels using spherical lens scanning acoustic microscopy; and the phenomenon of ultrasonic light diffraction. The description of bichromatic tunable acousto-optic separator is fully covered. The diffraction phenomenon affecting the properties of the fibre-optic sensor system is discussed in detail. The text describes in depth the opto-acoustic measurement of ultrasound velocity in a solidifying polymer. The evaluation of microfracture due to thermal shock using acoustic emission is completely presented. A chapter is devoted to the detection of a weak adhesive and adherent interface in bonded joints. The book can provide useful information to engineers, students, and researchers.
