Book Uncovering Submerged Landscapes

Download or read book Uncovering Submerged Landscapes written by Kelly Rose Bale Monteleone and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2019 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earlypeoples migrating to the Americas via the coastal migration route would havetravelled through southeast Alaska during periods with lower sea levels. Theresidues of where they lived, hunted and gathered are on the now submergedcontinental shelf of southeast Alaska. A GIS model, two years of marinegeophysical survey (including side scan sonar, sub-bottom profiling andmultibeam sonar) and minimal subsurface testing have allowed the author torefine the methods for locating submerged archaeological sites buried on thecontinental shelf. The environment is reconstructed in 500-year intervals, andthese intervals are used to create a predictive model for each time periodusing inductive and deductive methods. The final model combines the intervalmodels for a final prediction of probable archaeological sites within theregion.

Book Living on the Edge

Download or read book Living on the Edge written by Laura Louise Smith and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal remains provide one of the most powerful data sets archaeologists can use to address questions of environmental change, diet, hunter-gatherer subsistence, prehistoric economies, and the role of non-human animals in the social, economic, and spiritual life of prehistoric peoples. The 2500-year-old archaeological site of Adamagan, located on the lower Alaska Peninsula, provides an excellent opportunity to address the issue of human-environment interactions through the study of its large number of well-preserved animal remains. Bordered by the Bering Sea to the north and the North Pacific Ocean to the south and west, surrounded by nine active volcanoes, and sitting at the margin of the Pacific tectonic plate, Adamagan is located in one of the most dynamic landscapes in western North America. The large number of house pits suggests that Adamagan was a large village, home to perhaps some 1,000 Aleuts during its main occupation ca. 300 B.C. to A.D. 100. There is no other archaeological site on the lower Alaska Peninsula that offers such a rich and complete record of human occupation. Because of its proximity to both the Bering Sea and North Pacific Ocean, sea mammal remains make up the majority of the animal remains recovered from Adamagan. While fish, birds, and shellfish also contributed to the prehistoric Aleut diet, it is clear that sea mammals made up the bulk of calories in the diet. The goal of this study was to use the animal remains from Adamagan to address questions of prehistoric Aleut subsistence and economy through the examination of human-environment interactions. The data gathered in this study will also be used to support and test hypotheses of environmental change--specifically sea level change--on the lower Alaska Peninsula. Models of resource optimization were also tested.

Book Novel Applications of Remote Sensing and GIS in Mass Wasting Hazard Assessments for Two Fjords of South Central Alaska

Download or read book Novel Applications of Remote Sensing and GIS in Mass Wasting Hazard Assessments for Two Fjords of South Central Alaska written by Matthew S. Balazs and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fjords of South-Central Alaska are dynamic environments and host to a number of natural hazards that have not received much attention from the research community. The cities of Seward and Whittier are two of Alaska’s most important marine transportation hubs, home to commercial fishing fleets, termini of the Alaska Railroad, and home to thousands of residents. This doctoral research focuses on landslides and their associated hazards in these under-studied areas. Chapter 2 involves surficial mapping of the study areas and documents the role of the underlying geologic processes that threaten the safety of people and infrastructure in the Passage Canal–Portage Valley area (including the town of Whittier), to better inform community planning, mitigation, and emergency response activities. Chapter 3 builds on the successes and lessons learned from the mapping efforts made in Chapter 2. A surficial geology and landslide inventory map were made using very high resolution orthoimagery, DEMs, and 3D models which were viewed in an immersive Virtual Reality (iVR) system. Chapter 4 examines the hazards associated with large amounts of sediment entering the alluvial fan system from further upslope. A collection of six Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and meteorological data collected over a ten-year period were used to estimate flood-related sedimentation. Uncertainties in each DEM were accounted for, and a DEMs of Difference (DoD) technique was used to quantify the amount and pattern of sediment introduced, redistributed, or exiting the system. The study shows that the DoD method and using multiple technologies to create DEMs is effective in quantifying the volumetric change and general spatial patterns of sediment redistribution between the acquisition of DEMs. Correlations of the changes in sediment budget with rainfall data and flood events were made. During the years of average rainfall, the reaches in the corridor experienced an overall decrease in sediment load, while heavy rainfall events both saw large influx of new sediment and the reworking of existing sediment. This research is the first to collect and use high resolution data for generating digital elevation models, for using a DoD method for mapping elevation changes over time, and for using these products along with available ancillary data for a hazard assessment in these regions. This doctoral work lays out a solid foundation for further work in hazard assessment that will also guide decision-makers in the future on mitigation measures in these important population centers in south central Alaska.

Book Lithic Technology at Adamagan

Download or read book Lithic Technology at Adamagan written by Tara R. Gauthier and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of three field seasons, a massive lithic assemblage has been uncovered at XCB-105, Adamagan, a first-millennium B.C. village on the lower Alaska Peninsula. Including biface tools, flake tools, and debitage, this highly curated assemblage, dominated by basalt, provides new insights into complex forager technologies. Disposal patterns at the site indicate use and re-use of houses. Examination of activity areas within houses and outside houses illustrates patterned areas of use. From early- and middle-occupation periods, raw material types and tool types at Adamagan show variation over time. Adamagan shares similarities with other sites in the region but has its own unique tool assemblage adapted to a maritime subsistence economy.

Book Mapping Archaeological Landscapes from Space

Download or read book Mapping Archaeological Landscapes from Space written by Douglas C Comer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mapping Archaeological Landscapes from Space offers a concise overview of air and spaceborne imagery and related geospatial technologies tailored to the needs of archaeologists. Leading experts including scientists involved in NASA’s Space Archaeology program provide technical introductions to five sections: 1) Historic Air and Spaceborne Imagery 2) Multispectral and Hyperspectral Imagery 3) Synthetic Aperture Radar 4) Lidar 5) Archaeological Site Detection and Modeling Each of these five sections includes two or more case study applications that have enriched understanding of archaeological landscapes in regions including the Near East, East Asia, Europe, Meso- and North America. Targeted to the needs of researchers and heritage managers as well as graduate and advanced undergraduate students, this volume conveys a basic technological sense of what is currently possible and, it is hoped, will inspire new pioneering applications. Particular attention is paid to the tandem goals of research (understanding) and archaeological heritage management (preserving) the ancient past. The technologies and applications presented can be used to characterize environments, detect archaeological sites, model sites and settlement patterns and, more generally, reveal the dialectic landscape-scale dynamics among ancient peoples and their social and environmental surroundings. In light of contemporary economic development and resultant damage to and destruction of archaeological sites and landscapes, applications of air and spaceborne technologies in archaeology are of wide utility and promoting understanding of them is a particularly appropriate goal at the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention.

Book Geographic Information Systems GIS

Download or read book Geographic Information Systems GIS written by Dayna Nielson and published by Nova Science Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability has been increasingly embraced as an overarching policy goal, and communities have been called to be active participants on the path towards attaining a balance between fundamental human needs and ecological resilience. Community-based organizations (CBOs) can benefit from using GIS in building community assets and developing well-conceived sustainability initiatives, but GIS has not yet been widely used for those purposes in CBOs. This book illustrates how geographic information (such as maps) can be useful in community development drawing from service-learning GIS projects, and argue that economic theories of sustainability and spatial thinking can be of help in building sustainable community. It also discusses the application of vehicle routing problems for sustainable waste collection; spatio-temporal visualization and analysis techniques in GIS; GIS applications in modern crop protection; role of geographic information system for water quality evaluation; and the use of remote sensing and GIS for groundwater potential mapping in crystalline basement rocks.
