Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iran has received much attention from a geopolitical and regional standpoint, but its economic challenges have not attracted a similar degree of interest. With a population of 69 million, considerable hydrocarbon resources, a dynamic and entrepreneurial middle class, and a relatively well-educated labor force, Iran's economic potential is considerable. This volume takes stock of critical developments in the Iranian economy in recent years. The study reviews the key issues and policy responses, highlights the nature of the challenges ahead, and draws implications for the next phase of reforms. The authors conclude that major challenges remain, although significant advances have been made in recent years in opening up the economy to international trade and foreign direct investment, encouraging the private sector, removing exchange restrictions, reforming the tax system, and enhancing macroeconomic management.

Economic policies in Iran have traditionally relied on the abundant availability of energy at a low price to finance the country’s economic development. Low domestic energy prices have resulted in excessive use of energy. Iran’s domestic energy use has been high by international standards, and energy demand growth has exceeded the rate of growth of per capita income, in contrast to the experience of the majority of low and high-income countries.

Book Islamic Republic of Iran

Download or read book Islamic Republic of Iran written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2000-09-29 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Islamic Republic of Iran inherited a highly centralized economy. The state-owned enterprises had monopolies over large sectors of the economy, including the financial system. This was compounded by Iran's excessive dependence on the volatile oil exports. Iran's five-year development plan aims at accelerating growth to create sufficient employment opportunities for a rapidly expanding labor force. De-monopolizing the economy, liberalizing trade, promoting private investment, strengthening the financial system, and improving the fiscal and monetary policy settings is required.

Book Financial Development and Economic Growth in Iran

Download or read book Financial Development and Economic Growth in Iran written by Mohammad Ali Aboutorabi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reasons of economic growth have been always one of the most controversial issues in economic science. One of the probable effective factors on economic growth which has been declared about one century ago is financial development. Despite of this long history, there are different opinions among economists about the cause and effect relationship between financial development and economic growth. However, most economists argue that economic growth has been strongly influenced by financial sector. At the same time, evidences of different countries are also very different in this case. In the modern economic system, financial system operates like the heart and bank networks like the vessels for the economy. The efficiency of economic system is involved in the correct function of banking system. The results revealed that in the case of Iran, there is a two-way long-run causality relationship between multilateral index of financial development and economic growth. These analyses and findings should help shed some light on the literature of finance-growth nexus in developing countries, and should be especially useful to anyone who may be interested in financial economics.

Book The Great Inflation

Download or read book The Great Inflation written by Michael D. Bordo and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlling inflation is among the most important objectives of economic policy. By maintaining price stability, policy makers are able to reduce uncertainty, improve price-monitoring mechanisms, and facilitate more efficient planning and allocation of resources, thereby raising productivity. This volume focuses on understanding the causes of the Great Inflation of the 1970s and ’80s, which saw rising inflation in many nations, and which propelled interest rates across the developing world into the double digits. In the decades since, the immediate cause of the period’s rise in inflation has been the subject of considerable debate. Among the areas of contention are the role of monetary policy in driving inflation and the implications this had both for policy design and for evaluating the performance of those who set the policy. Here, contributors map monetary policy from the 1960s to the present, shedding light on the ways in which the lessons of the Great Inflation were absorbed and applied to today’s global and increasingly complex economic environment.

Book Economic Welfare and Inequality in Iran

Download or read book Economic Welfare and Inequality in Iran written by Mohammad Reza Farzanegan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines economic inequality and social disparity in Iran, together with their drivers, over the past four decades. During this period, income distribution and economic welfare were affected by the 1979 Revolution, the eight-year war with Iraq, post-war privatization and economic liberalization initiatives carried out under the Rafsanjani and Khatami administrations, the ascendance of a populist economic platform under the Ahmadinejad administration, and the lifting of energy and financial sanctions under the Rouhani administration. Featuring a mix of scholars, including Iranian academics who experienced these changes and are publishing in English for the first time, this collection offers quantitative and descriptive studies of the country's post-revolutionary economic development and disparities. In most chapters, a hypothesis is developed from existing theories or observations, which is then tested using available data. This unique combination of new voices, academic as well as personal experiences, and scientific methods will be a valuable addition to the library of the scholars of modern Iran’s economy and society.
