Book The Use of Mental Tests in School Administration Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Use of Mental Tests in School Administration Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by Virgil E. Dickson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of Mental Tests in School Administration, Vol. 4 Within the last two or three decades the public school system has gradually grown more and more complex. Not only have studies and curricula increased in number, but school organization has become highly differentiated and the means of ministering to the needs of individual children have been greatly multiplied. Indeed, a modern school system is as marvelous an expression of complexity in education as the modern city is an expression of complexity of social life. An accompaniment of greater complexity has been increased school costs. The greater costs are in part a result of the more varied features combined in the modern complex system. Increased costs are partly due, of course, to the gradually changing economic situation and to the higher standards of living which have been established. The need for careful study of any enterprise or institution increases as complexity becomes greater and as costs multiply. Public schools have shown themselves responsive to this need. Within the last two decades as a result of the initial efforts of Rice, Thorndike, Strayer, and others, scientific procedures applicable to analyzing and measuring the efficiency of school procedures and the costs of the same have been developed. By this time rather satisfactory standards have been established for judging the efficiency of a school plant, the organization of a school system, the ability of children in the various subjects from grade to grade, the costs which are reasonable for various types of school work, and so on. Just as a well established business enterprise no longer relies upon rule of thumb methods nor trial and error processes, so no school system which is economically and efficiently operated may rely upon such methods. In keeping with the foregoing considerations, the Board of Education of the Berkely Public Schools established a Bureau of Research and Guidance at the opening of the school year 1919. This bureau is responsible for conducting a continuous survey of the most pressing educational and financial problems connected with the operation of the system. This monograph is the first printed report of the results of the work of this bureau. No effort has been made to compile a complete report of all of the efforts and activities of the Bureau of Research and Guidance. Sufficient results have been achieved, however, and sufficient services been rendered to call forth the brief report made herein. The first chapter concerns itself with a brief summary of some of the major types of work in the Berkeley Public Schools carried on by the bureau. The later chapters set forth in a scientific impersonal way the relation of measurement to efficiency in the classification and teaching of children. Both of these are central problems of large concern in the administration of schools. Hundreds of children in the schools of Berkeley have profited during the last three years in both happiness and growth as a result of the more scientific handling of them through the work of this bureau. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Tests for School Use, Vol. 17 In the spring of 1919 Doctor Holley, while acting as assistant director of the Bureau of Educational Research of the University of Illinois, tried out six group intelligence scales in the schools of Champaign, Illinois. A kind of survey, narrow but intensive in character, was thus afforded. The data, how ever, with a little more analysis could be made to yield important results as to the reliabilty and validity of each of these six scales as instruments for measuring intelligence. With this thought in mind Doctor Holley carried out some of the necessary analyses and wrote the monograph which follows. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Well-Known Mental Tests Evaluated and Compared, Vol. 52 As to the schedule of tests to be used in testing normal minds it was found best not to use the stanford-binet alone but to have the schedule composed of that test and the five others which were found valuable. From the tests used and results obtained it cannot be stated here whether this schedule is of value as to vocational guidance for the reason that the factors involved in each test are not known with certainty and until they are known, definite valid conclusions about the abilities of the individuals concerned cannot be reached. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of Psychological Tests in the Educational and Vocational Guidance of High School Pupils: Revised and Enlarged Edition The problem of administering the physical side of this vast educational enterprise has occupied the attention of school authorities to such an extent that small consideration has been given to the need for internal betterment. The average Ameri can community is willing to tax itself for material equipment. An imposing high-school building becomes a matter of civic pride. It is a good talking point in chamber of commerce literature, and can be shown to visitors as an index of the progressive nature of the community. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Mental and Physical Tests, Vol. 2 of 2: Complex Processes; A Book of Directions Compiled With Special Reference to the Experimental Study of School Children in the Laboratory or Classroom If it be not thought bad form to preface a \olnme an apology, I should like to ask the indulgence of those of an readers who have been so complimentary as to express to the publishers and to me their irritation at this delay of two years or more in the completion of the revised second edition of the Jlunual. The truth is, that the unexpected exhaustion of the first edition of the book found me quite unprepared to rewrite the text at short notice, and that the whole subject of mental tests had meanwhile so expanded as to present a task of no small magnitude to one who would seek to deal at all z'idet'luatelt with the material that had become available. Book Manual of Mental and Physical Tests

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Mental and Physical Tests: A Book of Directions Compiled, With Special Reference to the Experimental, Study of School Children in the Laboratory or Classroom Hitherto the literature of mental and physical tests has been scattered in numerous journals; the results obtained by different investigators have too often not been compared; indeed, in many cases where the methods have been divergent, comparison has been impossible. In consequence, there have been no recognized standards of procedure and none of performance. Nevertheless, I believe that the time has now come for the taking of an account of stock, and for the systematization of the available materials. This conviction, which is the outgrowth of my own interest in the experimental study of mental capacities, an interest that has been with me during the past ten years, has been confirmed by many suggestions from colleagues and friends, who have pointed out that a manual of directions for mental tests would meet a real need, and might further the cause of investigation. More particularly, at the instigation of Mr. C. H. Stoelting, of Chicago, who has undertaken to supply the apparatus and materials prescribed in this volume, I began, in March, 1906, to prepare a small handbook of mental tests. The impossibility of adequate treatment of the subject in small compass has, however, necessitated the expansion of that early undertaking into the present work. In the introductory sections of the volume, I have sought to show the general purposes of mental tests, to lay down rules for their conduct, and to explain the methods of treating data. In this connection I discuss the calculation of measures of general tendency, measures of variability, indexes of correlation, and other statistical constants. In the body of the volume, I have brought together, for specific treatment, some fifty of the most promising tests.
