Assoc. 69, pp. 383-393) has been used in recent years for evaluating robust estimators, detecting outliers, computing asymptotic variances for estimators, and for hypothesis testing. In this report, the use of influence functions for various parameters is proposed, not only as a tool for outlier detection, but also as a method for replacing outliers and/or missing observations. This approach is illustrated on the estimation for the variance of a distribution and it is pointed out how the method can be applied in simple linear regression problems. This approach can be extended to more complex regression type applications such as the estimation of the orbit parameters of a satellite.

The use of exploratory data analysis as an aid in modeling and statistical forecasting is also described. This monograph is likely to be of primary benefit to students taking a general course in survey sampling techniques, and to individuals and groups who deal with large data collection systems and are constantly seeking ways to improve the overall quality of their data.

Book excerpt: Hampel's influence function has been used by Devlin, Gnanadesikan, and Kettenring to detect bivariate observations which have unusual influence on estimates of correlation. In the validation of energy data systems such observations may sometimes be considered to be outliers. The identification of such outliers may be valuable for the detection of errors in a data base. When data are used in regression equations, those observations which have the greatest effect on the multiple correlation coefficient or the regression coefficients are of interest. The contours of constant influence are derived for the multiple correlation coefficient in the case of regressing two variables on a third. In some problems the analytic form of the influence function may be difficult to derive. In such cases the empiric estimator of the influence function, as proposed by Mallows, may be useful for detecting outliers. For FPC form 4 power plant data, the correlation between generation and consumption is a parameter of interest to users of the data. Estimates of the contours of constant influence were determined and used to detect outliers with respect to bivariate correlation.

PCA is often used to reduce the complexity of high dimensional datasets by finding lower order projections that explain much of the variability within the data. However, many statistical estimators such as PCA that are applied to such data can be highly influenced by just a few observations. The influence function is a useful diagnostic tool that can assist in determining influential observation types on statistical estimators. We study the influence functions with respect to individual and multiple principal components and show how these may be used to highlight the types of observations that may or may not be influential in practice. It is also common in statistical practice to study the effects of outlying observations. However, not all outliers are influential in estimation and likewise not all influential observations are outliers. We therefore give consideration to the use of sample versions of the influential functions that may be used to detect influential observations in practice as opposed to employing classical outlier detection methods.

The question of the analysis of relationships of this sort has nevertheless rather surprisingly received less attention from statisticians and others than it would seem to deserve. Of the available methods, that address ing the question most directly is canonical correlation analysis, here referred to for convenience as canonical analysis. Yet canonical analysis is often coolly received despite a lack of suitable alternatives. The purpose of this book is to clarify just what may and what may not be accomplished by means of canoni cal analysis in one field of scientific endeavor. Canonical analysis is concerned with reducing the correlation structure be tween two (or more) sets of variables to its simplest possible form. After a review of the nature and properties of canonical analysis, an assessment of the method as an exploratory tool of use in ecological investigations is made. Applications of canonical analysis to several sets of ecological data are described and discussed with this objective in mind. The examples are drawn largely from plant ecology.
