Book Characterization of Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus Mykiss and Fathead Minnow Pimephales Promelas Cell Lines as Models to Study Pulp and Paper Effluent Effects in Fish

Download or read book Characterization of Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus Mykiss and Fathead Minnow Pimephales Promelas Cell Lines as Models to Study Pulp and Paper Effluent Effects in Fish written by Caroline Sue Tracy Cheng and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The effects of aquatic toxicants on fish growth and development have been well-documented, in contrast to the changes in gene expression that necessarily precede them. Many of these toxicants are exogenous compounds that possess the ability to mimic steroid hormones or inhibit normal endocrine functions, which are known as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). The Law laboratory previously obtained mRNA expression data indicating that exposure to aquatic effluents from a combined news/kraft pulp and paper mill changed the expression of genes associated with EDC exposure in the livers of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas). Societal desire to reduce the use of animals in toxicity testing has encouraged the development and use of in vitro systems, including vertebrate cell models. In this study, the gene expression of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) liver cell line RTL-W1 and the fathead minnow liver cell line FHM-L was examined following effluent exposure. In the RTL-W1 and FHM-L cell lines, 24 h exposure to effluents was sufficient for assessing changes in gene expression, with maximum changes observed between 4 and 6 h after exposure.

Book Immediate Effects of Acute Stress on Innate Immunity in Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus Mykiss

Download or read book Immediate Effects of Acute Stress on Innate Immunity in Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus Mykiss written by Nora Egan Demers and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis tests the hypothesis that innate immunity may be enhanced immediately following a stressful event. The experiments characterize the acute effects of the fight or flight response on some immunological and endocrine parameters in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Plasma cortisol and catecholamines were elevated within seconds of the initiation of an acute handling stressor consisting of 30 seconds in the air and five, 10 or 20 minutes in a shallow bucket of water. Plasma lysozyme activity increased after stress, however, the increases were not statistically significant unless variation was reduced by serial bleeding of the same individual trout before and after stress. A more "resting" fish was achieved by use of the anesthetic 2-phenoxy-ethanol which was surreptitiously introduced into the tanks before the initial bleed. Individual fish were then revived in freshwater and stressed as before. Enhancement of lysozyme activity was evident although levels of plasma stress hormones in fish that were anesthetized, revived and stressed were less than when fish were similarly stressed without anesthetic. Levels of cortisol and catecholamines increased within seconds of capture and aerial exposure, returned to near pre-stress levels after the fish had been placed in a shallow bucket of water for 30 seconds, then increased again. Evaluation of the influence of acute stress on survival following challenge with the pathogen Vibrio anguillarum yielded equivocal data. Results presented here suggest that enhancement of innate defenses as part of the fight or flight response merits further evaluation.

Download or read book The Fish Oocyte written by Patrick J. Babin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the growing needs in deciphering the biological processes associated with fish reproduction, in view of the growth of aquaculture and the dwindling natural stocks of commercially important fish. It presents a comprehensive overview on egg production in fish, from the standpoint of the oocyte. With this view in mind, the book includes chapters on oocyte development (oogenesis), hormonal regulation and hormone receptors, formation of the egg envelopes, growth, accumulation of nutrients and maternal transcripts, maturation, hydration, ovulation and fertilization. A special emphasis is placed on using state-of-the-art tools including electron microscopy for discerning the ultra-structure of the follicle and genomic/proteomic tools to fully understand biological basis of fish reproduction. Studies on promoting oocyte maturation, ovulation and spawning in farmed fish and preservation of fish oocytes at low temperatures are also included. The book will appeal to University lecturers, students, research scientists and those associated with culture of fish in freshwater or marine aquaculture.

Book Our Stolen Future

Download or read book Our Stolen Future written by Theo Colborn and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, scientists have noticed disruptions in animal breeding cycles, accompanied by increases in birth defects, sexual abnormalities and reproductive failure. Humans are not immune either, with sperm counts dropping by as much as 50% in recent decades and with women seeing a rise in hormone-related cancers, endometriosis and other disorders. This book traces the cause of these aberrations and diseases to the pervasive presence in the environment of chemicals that mimic hormones and trick the reproductive system. The conclusions are as obvious as they are inescapable - unless we make vital changes in the way we manufacture and employ the artefacts of our good life , there will be no life at all.

As the aquaculture industry grows, exposure of farmed fish to environmental contaminants, and the need for chemical therapeutic agents for fish, will increase. This book is designed to bring together authorities worldwide on the regulation of environmental contaminants and food chemicals and researchers investigating the metabolism and disposition of foreign chemicals (xenobiotics) in fish species.

Book Hormonally Active Agents in the Environment

Download or read book Hormonally Active Agents in the Environment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-02-03 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some investigators have hypothesized that estrogens and other hormonally active agents found in the environment might be involved in breast cancer increases and sperm count declines in humans as well as deformities and reproductive problems seen in wildlife. This book looks in detail at the science behind the ominous prospect of "estrogen mimics" threatening health and well-being, from the level of ecosystems and populations to individual people and animals. The committee identifies research needs and offers specific recommendations to decision-makers. This authoritative volume: Critically evaluates the literature on hormonally active agents in the environment and identifies known and suspected toxicologic mechanisms and effects of fish, wildlife, and humans. Examines whether and how exposure to hormonally active agents occursâ€"in diet, in pharmaceuticals, from industrial releases into the environmentâ€"and why the debate centers on estrogens. Identifies significant uncertainties, limitations of knowledge, and weaknesses in the scientific literature. The book presents a wealth of information and investigates a wide range of examples across the spectrum of life that might be related to these agents.
