Book The Use of Hydrogen as an Inert Gas During Diving Pulmonary Function During Hydrogen Oxygen Breathing at Pressures Equivalent to 200 Feet of Sea Water

Download or read book The Use of Hydrogen as an Inert Gas During Diving Pulmonary Function During Hydrogen Oxygen Breathing at Pressures Equivalent to 200 Feet of Sea Water written by James H Dougherty (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of the characteristics of hydrogen as an inert gas for use in diving is presented, with special emphasis on the extention of the respiratory limitation in diving by use of this least dense of all gases. Forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), forced expiratory volume in 2 seconds (FEV2), peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), peak inspiratory flow rate (PIFR), and maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV) were measured on four subjects breathing 97% H2-3% O2 at 200 fsw, on two subjects breathing 97% He-3% o2, and on two divers using 97% N2-3% O2. The MVV on H2-O2 at 200 fsw was 14% better than on air at the surface and was improved 40% compared with He-O2 and 171% when compared with N2-O2 at 200 fsw. Similar findings were obtained for the following functions: FEV1, FEV2, PEFR, and PIFR. This is the first study in which pulmonary function has been measured during hydrogen-oxygen breathing. The values in this study for the relationship of relative gas density to flow are in good agreement with both the theoretical and experimental values of Wood and Bryan.

Book The Use of Hydrogen Oxygen Breathing Mixtures for Deep Ocean Diving

Download or read book The Use of Hydrogen Oxygen Breathing Mixtures for Deep Ocean Diving written by William P. Fife and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulated dives were made with dogs to a depth equivalent to 1000 feet of Sea water (305 meters). Sixteen of these animals breathed a non-explosive hydrogen-oxygen mixture (hydrox) containing no more than 3% oxygen, while 12 breathed gas mixtures containing helium in place of hydrogen. In a number of dives, animals were exposed to hydrogen continuously for between 96-100 hours, 48 of which was spent at 1000 FSW. Extensive pre- and post-dive blood enzyme and hematological studies were carried out. In addition lung, brain and liver biopsies were carried out on selected animals. all such studies showed no significant abnormalities. One dive employing helium and one dive employing hydrogen proved fatal. In both instances, these fatalities were due to volatile hydrocarbons present in a cylinder of contaminated oxygen. All other animals survived the exposures. Indeed, some animals made more than one dive. Three of these animals still appear normal after 3 to 5 years post-dive. EEG studies showed no residual post-dive abnormalities and no evidence of High Pressure Nervous Syndrome while at 1000 FSW, although transient EEG abnormalities were noted during hypoxia. Techniques were developed for mixing hydrogen and oxygen in a non-explosive manner. The techniques developed for the use of hydrox appear to be reasonably safe. For the past eleven years, this laboratory has carried out over 645O hours of hydrox exposure on animals including mice, rats, dogs, and man, and has mixed approximately 200 cylinders of hydrox without an accident related to the use of hydrogen.

Book excerpt: “Superbly written and action-packed, The Last Dive ranks with such adventure classics as The Perfect Storm and Into Thin Air.”—Tampa Tribune Spurred on by a fatal combination of obsession and ambition, Chris and Chrisy Rouse, an experienced father-son scuba diving team, hoped to achieve wide-spread recognition for their outstanding and controversial diving skills by solving the secrets of a mysterious, undocumented, World War II German U-boat that lay only a half day’s mission from New York Harbor. The Rouses found the ultimate cost of chasing their personal challenge: death from what divers dread the most—decompression sickness, or “the bends.” In this gripping recounting of their tragedy, author Bernie Chowdhury, himself an expert diver, explores the thrill-seeking, high-risk world of deep sea diving, its legendary figures, most celebrated triumphs, and notorious tragedies.

Book Underwater Medicine and Related Sciences

Download or read book Underwater Medicine and Related Sciences written by Charles Wesley Shilling and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume follows and updates AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON DIVING AND SUBMARINE MEDICINE published by Gordon and Breach, Science Publishers, Inc., in 1971. The time period covered is primarily the calendar years 1970 and 1971. Also included, however, is much material from the calendar years 1968 and 1969 not in the previous publication. A brief analysis of the sources of material precedes the citations and abstracts, which comprise the main section of the volume. The bibliography is followed by a permuted subject index and an author index. Also included, following the indexes, is a micro thesaurus. Although no attempt has been made to do a critical subject analysis, such an analysis could be accomplished through selecting a particular subject, looking up the appropriate key works in the rotated index, identifying the abstracts, analyzing them, obtaining complete copy as desired, and completing the critical review. Download or read book Offshore Medicine written by Robin A.F. Cox and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To be asked to prepare a second edition of a book is heartening for any author or editor. Apart from the opportunity to make the corrections and amendments which are inevitable in a practical manual there is also the possibility to make additions which enhance its usefulness. Above all a further edition usually means that the book has been found to be accept able to a large number of readers and has fulfilled a need. This is indeed the case with Offshore Medicine, which in its description of the medical aspects of offshore work has provided a unique guide to the occupational health of a new industry. The rapid development of offshore exploration for gas and oil which began in the 1960s created a whole new range of related industries. Most attention was focused on the problems of deep diving in the North Sea because of the great expansion of the diving industry, its technological advances and the high mortality of divers in the early years. Diving, however, is only a fraction of the total endeavour concerned with the offshore industry. The much larger population of workers offshore who man the rigs and barges, the toolpushers, helicop ter pilots, crane drivers, scaffolders and roustabouts, geologists and so on, so sympathetically described by A. Alvarez in his recent book Off shore, A North Sea Journey, and the harsh and difficult conditions in which they often have to work are sometimes forgotten.

Book Underwater Medicine and Related Sciences

Download or read book Underwater Medicine and Related Sciences written by Margaret F. Werts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the third annotated bibliography on this subject area to be compiled by these authors. The first, published by Gordon and Breach, Science Publishers, in 1971, was entitled AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON DIVING AND SUBMARINE MEDICINE. It covered material published during the 1960's. The second volume, entitled UNDERWATER MEDICINE AND RELATED SCIENCES: A GUIDE TO THE LITERATURE, published in 1973 by Plenum Press, covered primarily material published during 1970 and 1971, with some material from 1968 and 1969. The present volume covers material published during 1972 and 1973, but here again some earlier material has been included. The purpose of these annotated bibliographies is to make available a large proportion of the published material, in abstract form, indexed in such a manner as to make it possible to compile a reasonably complete annotated bibliography on any specific subject area in the field. It is possible thus to learn where the work is being done, by whom, and how extensively. Also, it becomes obvious what areas of research are lacking or inadequate. These specific searches can also form a background of reference material on which to base further research, or from which to write monographs or state-of-the-art surveys. Papers, articles and reports listed here are in most cases readily available.

This book was released on 1985-03-31 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to about 30 years' ago diving activity was centred primarily on the naval services, who provided a lead in the development of equipment, techniques and procedures. Apart from one or two spectacular salvage undertakings, the main commercial activity up until that time was fairly low-key work in docks and harbours. The concept of saturation diving emerged from subsea habitats of which Captain Cousteau was one of the pioneers. This led the way to commercial development in support of exploration and the production of offshore oil and gas, and I believe that my friend Henri Delauze was one of the first to mount the subsea habitat on deck and provide a sealed bell to convey divers from the habitat to the seabed without change of pressure. A remarkable feature of offshore oil and gas technology in the North Sea has been the willingness of all concerned to exchange information regarding R&D. This has had a major effect on the advance in technology over the last few years. As far as diving is concerned, it is to some extent 'Hobson's Choice'. Legal patents are difficult to achieve in this field, and the casual nature of diver employment to date has meant that ideas and techniques circulate almost as freely as the divers themselves. In addition, the advertis ing of the new technologies which one has to offer almost auto matically means disclosure of what otherwise might be secret.
