Book Use of Flow Injection for In line Elimination of Interferences in Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

Download or read book Use of Flow Injection for In line Elimination of Interferences in Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The versatility of flow injection as a sample manipulation technique is demonstrated in the automatic handling of certain interferences. Methods are presented for the in-line addition of interferent suppressors and the in-line removal of interferents using ion-exchange separation. This methodology is demonstrated in: (i) the addition of potassium iodide to reduce the analyte to a common oxidation state prior to hydride formation, for the determination of arsenic and antimony; (ii) the in-line addition of tellurium to increase the tolerance of the interference of certain noble metals; and (iii) the in-line separation of the interference of certain base metals using ion-exchange separation.

Book Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

Download or read book Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy written by Federico Noguerra and published by . This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is a spectroanalytical procedure for the quantitative determination of chemical elements using the absorption of optical radiation (light) by free atoms in the gaseous state. Atomic absorption is so sensitive that it can measure down to parts per billion of a gram (μg dm-3) in a sample. The technique makes use of the wavelengths of light specifically absorbed by an element. They correspond to the energies needed to promote electrons from one energy level to another, higher, energy level. Atomic absorption spectrometry has many uses in different areas of chemistry. Examining metals in biological fluids such as blood and urine, Monitoring our environment - e.g. finding out the levels of various elements in rivers, seawater, drinking water, air, petrol and drinks such as wine, beer and fruit drink. In some pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, minute quantities of a catalyst used in the process (usually a metal) are sometimes present in the final product. By using AAS the amount of catalyst present can be determined. Many raw materials are examined and AAS is extensively used to check that the major elements are present and that toxic impurities are lower than specified - e.g. in concrete, where calcium is a major constituent, the lead level should be low because it is toxic. By using AAS the amount of metals such as gold in rocks can be determined to see whether it is worth mining the rocks to extract the gold. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy aims to cover all major topics which are required to equip scholars with the recent advancement in this field. The book provides a systematic treatment of combining flow injection methods with all fields of atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) including flame, hydride generation and electrothermal AAS.

Book Design and Optimization of a Flow Injection Hydride Generator and Its Use for Automated Standard Additions

Download or read book Design and Optimization of a Flow Injection Hydride Generator and Its Use for Automated Standard Additions written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuous flow approach to the generation of the gaseous covalent hydrides for the determination of certain Group IV, V and VI elements is described. A flow injection hydride generator in which the sample is injected into an acidic carrier stream, which is subsequently merged with the reductant, has been developed. This apparatus allows rapid analysis, ease of automation and simple in-line handling of interferences. The tried and tested method of standard additions is automated and simplified in the described apparatus. The determination of bismuth in the presence of palladium is used to demonstrate the feasibility of the flow injection approach to standard additions. The apparatus has also been optimized for the determination of antimony, arsenic, bismuth, selenium and tellurium yielding detection limits of 10, 8, 2, 6 and 3 ng/ml, respectively. Germanium, lead and tin are also measurable using the apparatus, however, the detection limits achieved were similar to those obtainable by flame atomic absorption spectrometry.

Book Handbook of Mineral Elements in Food

Download or read book Handbook of Mineral Elements in Food written by Miguel de la Guardia and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-05-06 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mineral elements are found in foods and drink of all different types, from drinking water through to mothers’ milk. The search for mineral elements has shown that many trace and ultratrace-level elements presented in food are required for a healthy life. By identifying and analysing these elements, it is possible to evaluate them for their specific health-giving properties, and conversely, to isolate their less desirable properties with a view to reducing or removing them altogether from some foods. The analysis of mineral elements requires a number of different techniques – some methods may be suitable for one food type yet completely unsuited to another. The Handbook of Mineral Elements in Food is the first book to bring together the analytical techniques, the regulatory and legislative framework, and the widest possible range of food types into one comprehensive handbook for food scientists and technologists. Much of the book is based on the authors’ own data, most of which is previously unpublished, making the Handbook of Mineral Elements in Food a vital and up-to-the-minute reference for food scientists in industry and academia alike. Analytical chemists, nutritionists and food policy makers will also find it an invaluable resource. Showcasing contributions from international researchers, and constituting a major resource for our future understanding of the topic, the Handbook of Mineral Elements in Food is an essential reference and should be found wherever food science and technology are researched and taught.
