Book Use of Diatom Algae as Biological Indicators for Assessing and Monitoring Water Quality of the Rivers in the Greater Toronto Area Canada

Download or read book Use of Diatom Algae as Biological Indicators for Assessing and Monitoring Water Quality of the Rivers in the Greater Toronto Area Canada written by Natasa Zugic-Drakulic and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diatom and environmental data collected from the rivers in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) were analyzed using various multivariate ordination and weighted averaging methods. A regional calibration set was based on the 280 samples collected from 42 sites of the Humber River on a monthly basis over a one-year period. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed that the first two axes were correlated with specific conductivity and temperature, suggesting that both spatial and temporal patterns were important. Specific conductivity was the most important variable and a diatom inference model was developed for this variable using the simple weighted average method with inverse de-shrinking. Subsequently, diatoms from five selected sites each belonging to one of five different land use categories and sampled over a 12-month period, were analyzed for temporal variations. Each land use site supported different diatom species, some of which further showed different seasonal changes. More polluted sites exhibited more distinct seasonal patterns, while less polluted sites showed less pronounced seasonal variability. For sites where seasonal variation was pronounced, distinct differentiation was found between winter and spring samples and summer and fall samples. Therefore it can be recommended to sample more than once per year, or to develop different diatom indices depending on the season. Despite the high seasonal variation in some sites, differences in overall diatom assemblages between more polluted and less polluted sites remained distinct, indicating that diatoms can be used as a powerful biomonitoring tool. The influence of substratum type on diatom composition and abundances was also tested by comparing pairs of rock and sand samples collected from 73 monitoring stations along six watersheds of the GTA. Results show that rocks and sand samples support similar diatom assemblages, with comparable species richness and diversity as well as growth forms. Correspondence Analysis (CA) did not show any separation between diatom assemblages from the two substrata, and CCA showed that the two assemblages not only have similar patterns in diatom distribution but are also controlled by the same environmental variables, suggesting that in river stretches where a preferred substratum is not present, the second choice substratum can be used.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This much revised and expanded edition provides a valuable and detailed summary of the many uses of diatoms in a wide range of applications in the environmental and earth sciences. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of diatoms in analysing ecological problems related to climate change, acidification, eutrophication, and other pollution issues. The chapters are divided into sections for easy reference, with separate sections covering indicators in different aquatic environments. A final section explores diatom use in other fields of study such as forensics, oil and gas exploration, nanotechnology, and archaeology. Sixteen new chapters have been added since the first edition, including introductory chapters on diatom biology and the numerical approaches used by diatomists. The extensive glossary has also been expanded and now includes over 1,000 detailed entries, which will help non-specialists to use the book effectively.

Book Environmental Requirements and Pollution Tolerance of Freshwater Diatoms

Download or read book Environmental Requirements and Pollution Tolerance of Freshwater Diatoms written by Rex L. Lowe and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on the environmental requirements and pollution tolerance of 300 common species and varieties of fresh water diatoms was compiled from 48 references. The following parameters were considered: pH, nutrients, salinity, organic pollution tolerance (sapobrien system), current, general habitat, specific habitat, seasonal distribution, temperature and geographical distribution. A consensus of opinions for each parameter was established for most taxa. It is suggested that this compilation be employed to evaluate data from plankton and periphyton samples collected for the assessment of water quality.

Book Twelfth International Diatom Symposium

Download or read book Twelfth International Diatom Symposium written by Herman van Dam and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-01-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twelfth International Diatom Symposium stressed how diatoms can be used to assess the human impact on natural waters, without neglecting other important fields of research. As the frustules of many diatom species are relatively resistant to dissolution they are preserved in freshwater and marine sediments and provide a record of past environments on earth. In past decades they have been successfully used to reconstruct changes in water bodies evoked by changes in salinity, acidification and eutrophication. In the last few years diatom-inferred predictions of environmental variables have become much more quantitative. In the most recent research reports the strong separation between palaeolimnological and neolimnological diatom research is fading, as palaeolimnologists are increasingly using modern calibration sets to infer past states of the environment. This quantitative approach is also very suitable for prediction of future changes in the biota of surface waters. Also ecological changes due to climatic modification have been investigated more thoroughly recently. A very important new research topic is the occurrence of toxic diatoms, particularly along the coasts of North America. These proceedings are intended to be a balanced view of such modern developments in diatom research. They should also be of interest to non-specialists in diatoms, who can use the results of diatom research as a tool in a more general taxonomic, ecological and geological context.

Book Diatom Communities As Indicators of Ecological Impairment in Rivers

Download or read book Diatom Communities As Indicators of Ecological Impairment in Rivers written by Taurai Bere and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field and laboratory studies were conducted to elucidate the confounding effects of substrate selection, eutrophication, organic pollution, ionic strength, land-use patterns, and heavy metal pollution on benthic diatom communities. Characteristics of benthic diatom communities in relation to pollution level and type were analysed through general criteria and specific criteria. Diatom communities closely reflected the pollution gradient. Diatom-based multivariate water quality assessment results based on different substrates are interchangeable. 17 diatom-based water quality indices developed in other regions proved useful in providing an indication of water quality. Hormesis was demonstrated with a Cd EC50 of 0.077 mg.L-1 being recorded. High metal accumulation capacity by periphyton was demonstrated. Pb and Cr III were shown to decrease the toxicity effects of Cd on periphyton communities. The closer the frequency and duration of the pulse is to a continuous exposure, the greater the effects of the contaminant on aquatic life. Light has a role in modulating the effects of metal toxicants on aquatic life. Diatoms are important indicators of ecological impairment.

Book Diatoms as Indicators of Water Quality

Download or read book Diatoms as Indicators of Water Quality written by L. Kannan and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed investigation of the seasonal trends in diatom species diversity revealed that the diversity index ranged between 1.17 and 3.09 bits/individual in the Vellar estuary and between 0.83 and 2.44 bits/individual in the Pitchavaram mangroves. This provided a good index for assessing and ranking the water quality of these biotopes. Diversity index values showed that the estuary and mangroves were subjected to varying degress of pollution, from slight to moderate. Mangroves ranked only next to estuary in water quality as indicated by the diversity index. The values also showed that the water quality improves during pre and postmonsoon seasons. These findings have drawn attention to the need to initiate steps for protecting the environment from further deterioration due to increasing pollution. [Authors' abstract].
