The present volume brings together multiple research perspectives to bear on the question of what constitutes best practices for the construction of spoken corpora. The book brings into closer contact scholars whose specializations have often remained in relatively different streams of scientific investigation; that is, scholars whose work falls primarily in conversation analysis, pragmatics and discourse analysis, but who are involved in spoken corpus compilation, on the one hand, and scholars who also specialize in linguistics but who have been intensively involved in developing various infrastructures for spoken corpora, on the other hand. This combination of scholars brings into better relief the concerns of data providers, data curators and data users in linguistic research. This book is thus unique in that it highlights best practices from both the perspective of assembling, annotating and linguistic analysis of spoken corpora, as well as from the perspective of processing, archiving and disseminating spoken language. The general trend of providing data online is thus accompanied by newly developing methodologies to interconnect linguistic data and metadata. This includes linguistic data collections, general-purpose knowledge bases (e.g., the DBpedia, a machine-readable edition of the Wikipedia), and repositories with specific information about languages, linguistic categories and phenomena. The Linked Data paradigm provides a framework for interoperability and access management, and thereby allows to integrate information from such a diverse set of resources. The contributions assembled in this volume illustrate the band-width of applications of the Linked Data paradigm for representative types of language resources. They cover lexical-semantic resources, annotated corpora, typological databases as well as terminology and metadata repositories. Book excerpt: Many books of the Hebrew Bible were either composed in some form or edited during the Exilic and post-Exilic periods among a community that was to identify itself as returning from Babylonian captivity. At the same time, a dearth of contemporary written evidence from Judah/Yehud and its environs renders any particular understanding of the process within its social, cultural and political context virtually impossible. This has led some to label the period a dark age or black box – as obscure as it is essential for understanding the history of Judaism. In recent years, however, archaeologists and historians have stepped up their effort to look for and study material remains from the period and integrate the local history of Yehud, the return from Exile, and the restoration of Jerusalem’s temple more firmly within the regional, and indeed global, developments of the time. At the same time, Assyriologists have also been introducing a wide range of cuneiform material that illuminates the economy, literary traditions, practices of literacy and the ideologies of the Babylonian host society – factors that affected those taken into Exile in variable, changing and multiple ways. This volume of essays seeks to exploit these various advances.
