Book The Use of Bluegills to Detect Zinc

Download or read book The Use of Bluegills to Detect Zinc written by John Cairns and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In conjunction with already existing methods for measuring the chemical and physical characteristics of water, methods for rapidly measuring biological effects of water quality would be very useful. Thus the authors studied the effects of pollution on the breathing rates of bluegills. The presence of zinc at concentrations of 8.7, 5.22, 4.16 and 2.55 mg/l in dechlorinated municipal tapwater was detected by an increase in breathing rate or a change in breathing rate variance of bluegills. None of the fish exposed to the three lower concentrations died during the experiments. The criterion for detection was an arbitrary number of responses occurring at the same time. An in-plant system for the prevention of fish kills caused by spills could be developed by monitoring several biological functions of fish simultaneously.

Book The Use of Fish Movement Patterns to Monitor Zinc

Download or read book The Use of Fish Movement Patterns to Monitor Zinc written by John Cairns and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuous monitoring system, consisting of an apparatus to detect light beam interruptions as a sign of aberrations in fish movement patterns, has been used to study the effects of fish exposure to lethal and sublethal concentrations of zinc. In addition to the exposure monitoring, the growth and reproductive success of exposed bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) were studied. In the movement tests, Notemigonus crysoleucas and Carassius auratus were exposed to 2.94-3.64 mg/l zinc ions as zinc sulfate for 96 hrs. The light system detected premortal movement aberrations allowing for survival of test fish by condition reversal. Analysis of LD50 levels was accomplished and recorded by atomic absorption spectrophotometry twice daily. Growth and reproduction tests involved exposure of one male and 3 females to Zn concentrations about equal to 0.1-0.01 of the lowest concentration detected by the monitoring tests. Eggs were collected and hatched separately. Concentrations of one-tenth the lowest zinc concentrations eliminated reproduction in the bluegills.

Book Biological Indicators of Freshwater Pollution and Environmental Management

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preface of a book often provides a convenient place in which the author can tender his apologies for any inadequacies and affords him the facility to excuse himself by reminding the reader that his art is long but life, or at least the portion of it in which he has the opportunity for writing books, is short. I, too, am deeply conscious that I have undertaken a task which I could not hope to complete to my own satisfaction but I offer, in self defence, the observation that, inadequate though it is, there is no other book extant, so far as I am aware, which provides the information contained herein within the covers of a single volume. Often during the last decade, in discharging my responsibilities for the environmental aspects of the water authority's operations and works, I should have been deeply grateful to have had access to a compendium such as this. The lack of a convenient source of data made me aware of the need which I have attempted to fill and in doing so I have drawn on my experiences of the kinds of problem which are presented to biologists in the water industry. The maxim 'half a loaf is better than none' seems particularly apt in this context.

Book Biological Monitoring in Water Pollution

Download or read book Biological Monitoring in Water Pollution written by John E. Cairns and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-03 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Monitoring in Water Pollution focuses on the processes, methodologies, and experiments involved in monitoring water pollution. Divided into six parts, the selection features the contributions of authors who have devoted time and energy in advancing biological monitoring to measure pollution in water. The first part is a review paper that focuses on the strengths of biological monitoring relative to the detection of harmful conditions. This part stresses that biological monitoring has received considerable attention. The second part deals with review papers on biological monitoring. The discussions focused on the identification of problem; the review of functional methods; community and ecosystem indices used in biomonitoring; and structure and function relationships relative to ecosystem stress. The third part covers the application of community structural analysis to biomonitoring programs. This part puts emphasis on the need to develop methods to identify community structures relative to the conduct of ecological research. Other parts of the selection are devoted to toxicity testing and discussions on the monitoring of waste discharges and introduction of chemicals to the environment. Experiments and models are presented to support the claims of the authors. The book can be a valuable source of information for those interested in the monitoring of water pollution.
