Book The Use of Bibliotherapy to Foster Multi ethnic Identity Development in Children with a Mexican Parent and an Anglo American Parent

Download or read book The Use of Bibliotherapy to Foster Multi ethnic Identity Development in Children with a Mexican Parent and an Anglo American Parent written by Diana Lizcano and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexican-Anglo American children may face possible challenges in their ethnic identity development because of the cultural differences between the two ethnic groups, as well as to a lack of role models, the pressure to select only one heritage group, and feeling different from the Anglo American majority group (Cruz, 2001; Shih & Sanchez, 2005). Bibliotherapy is an age-appropriate intervention to address multi-ethnic identity development and to foster multicultural sensitivity (Pardeck & Pardeck, 1993). The first purpose of this study was to evaluate the available multi-ethnic children's books, in order to assess strengths and areas needing improvement. There were five hypotheses. First, the majority (i.e., greater than 50%) of available multi-ethnic children's books would not sufficiently (i.e., 60% or more) address possible opportunities and challenges for multi-ethnic individuals. Second, most (i.e., over 50%) available multi-ethnic children's books would not present a sufficient number (i.e., 60% or more) of the possible multi-ethnic identity options for multi-ethnic individuals. Also, the majority (i.e., over 50%) of the children's books would not address most of the factors that support healthy multi-ethnic development, as well as therapeutic messages about multi-ethnic identity decision making. Additionally, the available children's books on multi-ethnic identity development specifically for Mexican-Anglo American children between the ages of five and eight, would be limited (i.e., 10% or less) in number. Lastly, the majority (i.e., over 50%) of available Mexican-Anglo American children's books would not present a sufficient (i.e., 60% or more) number of the possible challenges specifically encountered by this population. Results indicated that the first four hypotheses were supported and the last one could not be tested due to a lack of Mexican-Anglo American children's books. These findings suggested that there are large gaps within the available multi-ethnic children's books and that the available children's stories do not accurately represent multi-ethnic children's identity development process. Additionally, perhaps most books were written for entertainment purposes rather than bibliotherapy. Lastly, the results indicated that there is a need for a Mexican-Anglo American multi-ethnic children's book. The second purpose of this study was to create a children's book for Mexican-Anglo Americans, five to eight years old. What am I? addressed the limitations in the available books. The book's goal was to facilitate ethnic identity development, multicultural sensitivity, communication, and support. To enrich the book, follow-up activities and a note for parents, teachers, and therapists were included.

This book was released on 2015-10-02 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While governing bodies have mandated that all students have the right to an education, with disabled students treated to the same rights and opportunities as non-disabled students, policymakers do not always agree on what all-inclusive education should look like. Challenges Surrounding the Education of Children with Chronic Diseases explores the needs that children with certain conditions—such as diabetes, cancer, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease—might have in the classroom. Featuring coverage on a wide range of topics relating to pre-service teacher training, school administrators’ policies, and the experiences of children with chronic health conditions, this book is an essential reference source for teachers, educators, school administrators, policymakers, and anyone else concerned with inclusive educational rights for all students.

Book Raising Biracial Children

Download or read book Raising Biracial Children written by Kerry Rockquemore and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2005 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the multiracial population in the United States continues to rise, new models for our understanding of mixed-race children and how their conception of racial identity must be developed. A wide divide between academics who research biracial identity, and the everyday world of parents and practitioners who raise and deal with mixed-race children exists. This book aims to fill this gap by providing an extensive synthesis of the existing research in the field, as well as a model for better understanding the unique process of racial identity development for mixed-race children. Raising Biracial Children provides parents, educators, social workers, and anyone interested in multiracial issues with an accessible framework for understanding healthy mixed-race identity development and to translate those findings into practical care-giving strategies.

Book Family Literacy Practices in Asian and Latinx Families

Download or read book Family Literacy Practices in Asian and Latinx Families written by Jorge E. Gonzalez and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the literacy beliefs and practices of parents and children from Asian and Latinx heritage backgrounds. In the US, children from Asian and Latinx immigrant backgrounds represent the largest population of dual language learners in schools. While existing research has paid significant attention to the roles of parenting and the home literacy environment on children's literacy development, relatively little attention has been allocated to immigrant families. Chapters aim to meet the need in the field to understand the roles of culture and immigrant experiences on children's literacy learning and development, including immigrant families' home environments and parents' involvement in literacy-related activities in both English and the parents' native language. As Hispanic/Latinx and Asian American populations grow in the US, this book answers an urgent call for school systems and child and family professionals to be aware of issues in this area and how to address them in culturally responsive ways.

Book The Racial ethnic Socialization of Multiracial multiethnic Children

Download or read book The Racial ethnic Socialization of Multiracial multiethnic Children written by Karen Gabriela Rivas and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multiracial-multiethnic population has grown significantly over the past 50 years, and about half of the current multiracial-multiethnic population is under the age of 18. A majority of the research conducted on this population has focused on the identity development of the multiracial-multiethnic individual. The available literature about multiracial-multiethnic identity development emphasizes healthy views about mixed race and ethnicity as a focal point for the well-being, self-esteem, and personal identity development of this population. This view includes the recent shift towards accepting the racial-ethnic identity of the multiracial-multiethnic individual regardless of how the person self-identifies. Race and racial issues have also been found to be a challenging and emotional process for parents raising multiracial-multiethnic children, particularly when discussing issues of discrimination. The purpose of this project is to provide a story-workbook that can be used by interracial-interethnic families with children 5-8. It is designed to help families discuss issues about race and ethnicity in order to promote a healthy identity development within the family system, and for the child as he/she grows.

Book Cross cultural Roots of Minority Child Development

Download or read book Cross cultural Roots of Minority Child Development written by Patricia M. Greenfield and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the first time in the field of developmental psychology that cross-cultural roots of minority child development have been studied in their ancestral societies in a systematic way--and by an international group of researchers. Most child development and child psychology texts take cultural diversity in development into account only as an addendum or as a special case--it is not integrated into a comprehensive theory or model of development. The purpose of this text is to redress this situation by enlisting insiders' and outsiders' perspectives on socialization and development in a diverse sampling of the world's cultures, including developing regions that often lack the means to speak for themselves in the arena of international social science. The unique feature of this text is the paradigm. For the minority groups represented, the questions focused on how development was behaviorally expressed within the culture of origin and in new societal contexts. Thus, developmental issues--such as language and mother-child interactions--for African-American children are considered in the United States as well as in the African culture of origin and in France as a country of immigration. This paradigm is considered for African and Asian cultures and the Americas, including Hispanics from Mexico as well as Native Americans. Specific questions posed consider the extent to which: * the development and socialization of minority children can be seen as continuous with their ancestral cultures; * the cultural and political conditions in the United States, Canada, and France have modified developmental and socialization processes, yielding discontinuities with ancestral cultures; * the ancestral cultures have changed, yielding cross-generational discontinuities in the development and socialization of immigrants from the very same countries. * the role of interdependence and independence in developmental scripts can account for historical continuities and discontinuities in development and socialization, both across and within cultures. These questions not only provide the unifying theme of this unique book but also a model for conceptualizing multi-culturalism within a unified framework for developmental psychology.
