Download or read book An International Antitrust Primer written by Mark R. Joelson and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2016-04-24 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the continuing inter-government cooperation over the regulation of international commerce, significant cross-country differences persist in areas such as merger control, notification to authorities, and remedies deemed appropriate for antitrust enforcement. Accordingly, companies must be aware of the rules that apply in the countries in which they do business. This fourth edition of the Kintner-Joelson classic International Antitrust Primerprovides a thorough update of the status of competition regulation in a number of key jurisdictions, including up-to-date case law involving the technology giants Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, and Facebook. Coverage focuses on the European Union and the United States — which continue to be foremost in the enforcement and refinement of comprehensive competition laws — but also takes into account the vast strides that are being made elsewhere, with chapters on South Korea, Japan, and India, as well as a chapter on the United Kingdom with a section on the post-Brexit implications. The book provides essential guidance on such issues of concern to business persons and their counsel as the following: • intellectual property rights; • extent and kind of criminal sanctions; • extraterritorial reach; • mergers and acquisitions; • level and type of enforcement activity; • effects of national foreign or domestic policy; • permissible cooperation among competitors; and • public procurement. Business persons, government officials, students, lawyers, and others who have been relying on this preeminent resource for years will greatly appreciate this thoroughly updated edition. There is nothing else that so lucidly and helpfully explains competition law for those who require a working knowledge of the subject to proceed confidently in their day-to-day work.

Download or read book International Commodity Markets and the Role of Cartels written by Mark S. LeClair and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-08 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of collusive international agreements (cartels) became widespread in the 1930s. At that time, attempts to control production and prices were mainly the prerogative of multinational firms operating in the developing (then colonized) world. The "modern era" of cartels began in the 1960s, when the governments of developing nations began to participate in commodity agreements to achieve increases and stability in the world price of their commodities. This book is principally concerned with the modern era of cartels. It goes beyond the singular example of petroleum and OPEC to examine the structure of international commodity markets for bauxite (aluminum ore), cocoa, coffee, rubber, sugar, and tin, and the conditions that led to the formation of cartels in those markets during the latter half of the twentieth century. Specifically, the work focuses on four major aspects of international commodity markets: patterns of production and consumption; economic dislocations to both importers and exporters due to price fluctuations; the formation of cartels as a solution to weak and variable commodity prices; and the likely effects arising from tightening raw material markets. The book concludes with a detailed examination of what the future holds for each of the cartels, and what role technology, 24-hour market trading, and decreasing foreign direct investment in producing countries will have on the management of commodity markets.

Download or read book Global Price Fixing written by John M. Connor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some books get written, others write themselves. This book is the latter type. I have devoted myselfto studying the economic organization of industries related to food and agriculture for almost twenty-five years. It has been my good fortune to work at places that tolerated my gadfly approach to research. So long as I produced a few publications each year and wooed a few graduate students to share those interests, I was free to pursue an array of topics: why firms diversifY, the competitive role of advertising, strategies for selling in overseas markets, measuring market power, and many others. Although firmly anchored in the eclectic analytical framework of industrial economics and focused on the food system, I traversed a wide field at will. Some years ago, I had pretty much convinced myself that naked price fixing was not a high priority for scholarship in these industries. True, collusion was rife in a few food industries, such as bid-rigging among suppliers of fluid milk to school districts in isolated rural districts. Ripping off milk money from school children is reprehensible enough, but the size of the economic losses from localized price fixing paled besides other sources of imperfect competition.

Download or read book International Competition Policy written by Michael A. Utton and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a welcome and timely addition to the library of materials exploring the implications of the move from internationalisation of trade towards globalisation. Michael Hutchings, European Competition Law Review This book provides an excellent introduction to the difficult and important issues surrounding international trade and competition policy. Douglas A. Irwin, Dartmouth College, US The opening up of world markets, rapid growth of trade and foreign direct investment create manifold problems for competition policy. Thus, international mergers may have adverse effects on many countries, international cartels may carve up world markets and dominant firms may seek to maintain their global position by exclusionary conduct. These problems have been recognised for more than half a century and some attempts have been made internationally to address them, so far with limited success. This progressive book seeks to explore the problems and concerns that globalisation has created for competition policy. The book begins by setting out the principles of competition and trade policies, and then goes on to address the impact of market globalisation on what are usually thought of as traditional antitrust concerns. These include the analysis of the difficulties arising from collusion and other restrictive practices, government sponsored voluntary co-operation , vertical restrictions and market access, pricing strategies of dominant firms and international mergers, all illustrated with a number of prominent case studies. The author concludes with an illuminating discussion on the feasibility of international co-operation on competition policy, the faltering progress that has been made so far and the prospects for future advances. This comprehensive volume will prove to be an invaluable resource to students and scholars of law and economics. It will also find wide appeal amongst researchers, policy makers and practitioners with an interest in industrial organisation, antitrust policy and globalisation.
