Download or read book History of the Development of Chinese Chan Thought written by Tianxiang Ma and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims to describe the history of Chan (Japanese Zen) School thought from the standpoint of social history. Chan, a school of East Asian Buddhism, was influential on all levels of societies in the region because of its intellectual and aesthetic appeal. In China, Chan infiltrated all levels of society, mainly because it engaged with society and formed the mainstream of Buddhism from the tenth or eleventh centuries through to the twentieth century. This book, taking a critical stance, examines the entire history of Chan thought and practice from the viewpoint of a modern Chinese scholar, not a practitioner, but an intellectual historian who places ideological developments in social contexts. The author suggests that core elements of Chan have their origins in Daoist philosophers, especially Zhuangzi, and not in Indian Buddhist concepts. Covering the period from the sixth century into the twentieth century, it deals with Chan interactions with neo-Confucianism, Quanzhen Daoism, and Gongyang new text philology, as well as with literature and scholarship, its fusion with Pure Land Buddhism, and its syncretic tendencies. Chan’s exchanges with emperors from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasty, as well as the motives of some loyalists of the Ming Dynasty for joining Chan after the fall of the Ming, are described. The book concludes with an examination of the views of Chan of Hu Shi, D.T. Suzuki, and the scholar-monk Yinshun.

Download or read book The Republican Legacy in International Thought written by Nicholas Greenwood Onuf and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-08 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Republicanism has enjoyed a revival of scholarly interest in several fields. In this book Nicholas Onuf provides the first major treatment of the republican way of thinking about law, politics, and society in the context of international thought. The author tells two stories about republicanism, starting with Aristotle and culminating in the eighteenth century, when international thought became a distinctive enterprise. These two stories surround the thought of Vattel and Kant, and by telling them side by side the author identifies a substantial but little-acknowledged legacy of republicanism in contemporary discussions of sovereignty, intervention, international society, peace, levels of analysis, and the global economy. In identifying this legacy in contemporary thought, Nicholas Onuf develops his constructivist approach to international theory.
Download or read book THE DARK FREEZE written by Peter Gregory and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probes from an advanced alien civilisation are discovered amongst meteorites which have hit the coldest parts of the planet. Are they an attempt to communicate, or are they a prelude to something much more sinister, an alien invasion? Is the human race in danger of annihilation? The events lead to much debate on earth. Scientists too are puzzled. Why have the aliens used probes? Why have the coldest, and least populated, parts of the planet been targeted? All these questions are answered when a giant asteroid, a mini-world full of aliens, swings into orbit. The sun’s life-giving light and heat is blocked out, causing the temperature to plummet to a mind-numbing minus sixty degrees Celsius. Most of the Earth’s plant and animal life perishes, including millions of humans, and the survivors are left facing the starkest of choices. As one attempt after another to defeat the aliens fails, the scientists come up with a final last-ditch weapon to destroy the enemy, but is it going to be too little too late?
Download or read book The Scribbler s Assassination written by Eric Johns and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E.Rick Jones was a penniless author while Fred, his twin brother, was a successful inventor and entrepreneur. Fred's advice on how Rick could improve his life was never any use because Rick, although he dreamed of becoming like his brother, in reality was hobbled by his timidity. When Rick was accused of being a paedophile, he found himself being investigated by the police and hounded by the media. The evidence appeared conclusive. No one would believe him that he was being framed and everyone he knew (including his wife) seemed to have a reason for wanting him imprisoned or murdered. There was no one he could trust. The media were doing their best to stir up a lynch mob and the police weren't interested in offering him protection. His brother thought his predicament hilarious. One way or another it seemed that his sheltered life was about to come to a painful end.

Download or read book Foucault and Social Dialogue written by Chris Falzon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-06-19 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foucault and Social Dialogue; Beyond Fragmentation is a compelling yet extremely clear investigation of these options and offers a new way forward. Christopher Falzon argues that the proper alternative to foundationalism is not fragmentation but dialogue and that such a dialogical picture can be found in the work of Michel Foucault. Such a reading of Foucault allows us to see, for the first time, the ethical and political position implicit in Foucault's work and how his work contributes to the larger debate concerning the death of man.

Download or read book Belief and Metaphysics written by Conor Cunningham and published by Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd. This book was released on 2007 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an exciting, distinguished and indeed brave volume on the relation between belief and metaphysics. The volume of twenty essays is exciting in that the points of entry to the question of relation and styles of discourse are so varied, while less-established voices are allowed to sound with the more established; it is distinguished not simply because of its many famous names, but because it unites in one volume analytic and continental philosophical approaches to the issue to the common purpose of retrieving yet also reconceiving metaphysics; and it is brave in that not only does it refuse to indulge the contemporary prejudice against metaphysics and the necessity for belief to forgo the comfort of relation, but brings to the surface postmodernity's own penchant for axiomatics and its containment of the religious by uncoupling it from metaphysical commitments." -Cyril O'Regan, Catherine F. Huisking Professor of Theology, Department of Theology, Notre Dame "Without metaphysics theology is boring, some one says in this book; without theology metaphysics goes nowhere, some one else says. Of course it depends what you mean by metaphysics and for that matter theology. There is more than enough here to interest, entertain, and even enrage philosophers and especially theologians. A MARVELLOUS COLLECTION!" -Fergus Kerr O.P., Honorary Fellow in the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh "This is a truly splendid collection of essays, admirable not only for its range, but for its depth. It would be hard to assemble a more distinguished cast of contributors, and harder still to find another volume that offers comparably rich and varied reflections on the profund relation between faith and metaphysical reasoning." -David Bentley Ha

Download or read book Hannah Arendt and Human Rights written by Peg Birmingham and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-29 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hannah Arendt's most important contribution to political thought may be her well-known and often-cited notion of the "right to have rights." In this incisive and wide-ranging book, Peg Birmingham explores the theoretical and social foundations of Arendt's philosophy on human rights. Devoting special consideration to questions and issues surrounding Arendt's ideas of common humanity, human responsibility, and natality, Birmingham formulates a more complex view of how these basic concepts support Arendt's theory of human rights. Birmingham considers Arendt's key philosophical works along with her literary writings, especially those on Walter Benjamin and Franz Kafka, to reveal the extent of Arendt's commitment to humanity even as violence, horror, and pessimism overtook Europe during World War II and its aftermath. This current and lively book makes a significant contribution to philosophy, political science, and European intellectual history.
