Book The Unusual Reality of Depression

Download or read book The Unusual Reality of Depression written by Richard J. Kosciejew and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-09-29 with total page 867 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have defined out of the depressed category the positions that one takes to have major implications for who one treats and how, that data are going to be considered relevant, and how one organizes that data. Many of the differences in the theoretical positions taken to be discussed in this volume start with a fundamental difference in how depression is defined. We cannot pretend to resolve these controversies, but we can at least, identify them and note some of the definitions and distinctions that are being employed currently. Our purpose of this volume is to provide an overview of the phenomena of depression, as it should become apparent that there is a tremendous heterogeneity to what falls under the broad rubric of depression and it has an arbitrariness to any boundaries that are drawn on these phenomena, than others. Confronted with all of this ambiguity and confusion, one must be cautious and not seek more precision that the phenomena of depression afford, and one should probably be skeptical about any decisive statement about the nature of depression. It is also, intended to prepare the reader for the diversity of theoretical perspectives that will be presented in this volume. Contemplating the phenomena of depression, one can readily detect patterns and come to a conclusion that some aspects of depression are more central than others, some are primary and causal, and others are secondary. Cognizant of this, the observer might conclude that there is some sort of interpersonal process going on that is critical to any understanding of depression.

But nonetheless, it is an important part in the belief of a phenomenal world, a world beset on prenominal experience. Such an assemblage of information must first take issue to derive from their categorical presentations for the existing sense of control, the effect or affect of underlying displacement or discouraging accounts of estrangement depend upon a better understanding and the best of possible explanations for which is not to be expected, even to expect of expectation. What is more important is to leave an open to a closed condition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This encyclopedia explores historical and contemporary fringe remedies seen as strange, ridiculous, or even gruesome by modern Western medicine but which nevertheless played an important role in the history of medicine. From placing leeches on the neck to treat a cough to using crocodile dung to prevent pregnancy, a number of medical treatments that now seem unusual were once commonplace. While a few of these remedies may have been effective, most were either useless or actually counterproductive to good health. Even today, there are alternative and fringe treatments considered bizarre by mainstream medicine yet used by hundreds of thousands of people. Bizarre Medicine: Unusual Treatments and Practices through the Ages offers a fascinating look into the history of medicine. Entries are organized by disease or medical condition and explore the folk and traditional "cures" used to treat them. Explanations are provided for why some treatments may have worked and why others may have done more harm than good. In addition, entries provide a clear description of the causes, symptoms, and current treatment options for each condition based on current scientific understanding. Each entry also discusses the condition's enduring impact on society and the arts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Me and the Mental is a memoir about the certain traumatic experiences that author Gary Rothlein had dealt with during the times in which there was no escape. In the writings of his book, there are details about how the experiences of the author had happened, insights, such as criticisms and personal evaluation, and how those experiences shaped his present. In certainty, there are different setting layouts from where these situations had taken place. Geographically, they occur in the states of California and Colorado. His writings are very descriptive and try to send out a message. It is that conflict can happen and only personal strength can move one forward. Personal behavior, decision-making, and family/social interactions are factors that do provide structure to the book. It was these components that brought the writer to create the memoir Me and the Mental.

This book was released on 2011-02-02 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A team of expert academics and practitioners examines the life circumstances that impact Latino/a youth growing up in two cultures—their native culture and that of the United States. What effect does growing up in an ethnic minority and perhaps in an immigrant family have on development? That is the overarching question Latina and Latino Children's Mental Health sets out to answer. The work examines all of the myriad physical, psychological, social, and environmental factors that undermine or support healthy development in Latino American children, from biology to economics to public policy. The first volume of this two-volume set focuses on early-life experiences and the second on youth/adolescent issues, treating such topics as children's development of a sense of self, development of linguistic skills, peer relationships, sexual orientation, and physical development. The work analyzes familial relationships, often an important resource that helps young people build resilience despite the stresses of migration. And it looks at patterns of behavior, social status, and social-goal orientations that differentiate Latino/a children and adolescents from their African American and European American peers.

Download or read book The Depths written by Jonathan Rottenberg and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly every depressed person is assured by doctors, well-meaning friends and family, the media, and ubiquitous advertisements that the underlying problem is a chemical imbalance. Such a simple defect should be fixable, yet despite all of the resources that have been devoted to finding a pharmacological solution, depression remains stubbornly widespread. Why are we losing this fight? In this humane and illuminating challenge to defect models of depression, psychologist Jonathan Rottenberg argues that depression is a particularly severe outgrowth of our natural capacity for emotion. In other words, it is a low mood gone haywire. Drawing on recent developments in the science of mood-and his own harrowing depressive experience as a young adult-Rottenberg explains depression in evolutionary terms, showing how its dark pull arises from adaptations that evolved to help our ancestors ensure their survival. Moods, high and low, evolved to compel us to more efficiently pursue rewards. While this worked for our ancestors, our modern environment-in which daily survival is no longer a sole focus-makes it all too easy for low mood to slide into severe, long-lasting depression. Weaving together experimental and epidemiological research, clinical observations, and the voices of individuals who have struggled with depression, The Depths offers a bold new account of why depression endures-and makes a strong case for de-stigmatizing this increasingly common condition. In so doing, Rottenberg offers hope in the form of his own and other patients' recovery, and points the way towards new paths for treatment.

Book Quang Tri Cadence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jon Oplinger
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2016-09-01
  • ISBN : 1476626847
  • Pages : 221 pages

Download or read book Quang Tri Cadence written by Jon Oplinger and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having flunked out of college in the fall of 1965, the author enlisted in the U.S. Army. After basic training he was assigned to Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, an institution dedicated to the manufacture of the commodity the wartime army most quickly expends--rifle platoon leaders. In June of 1968, he found himself leading a rifle platoon in D Company 2/5th, First Cavalry Division. Quang Tri Cadence draws upon the original maps used in Vietnam and upon the battalion radio logs which were recently declassified at the time of writing. Life in a rifle platoon is presented at the boot level with all its grit, bewilderment, fatigue and fear. This book is not about what the pentagon is pleased to call "violence processing"; this book is about ordinary events in strange places; it is about being "in the field" and coming home. The author's experiences at Kent State University during the shootings in May of 1970 are also recounted.
