Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Stonewall Award winner Bill Konigsberg, a remarkable, funny, sexy, heartbreaking story of two teen boys finding each other in New York City at the height of the AIDS epidemic. The first thing I noticed about C.J. Gorman was his plexiglass bra. So begins Destination Unknown -- it's 1987 in New York City, and Micah is at a dance club, trying to pretend he's more out and outgoing than he really is. C.J. isn't just out -- he’s completely out there, and Micah can't help but be both attracted to and afraid of someone who travels so loudly and proudly through the night. A connection occurs. Is it friendship? Romance? Is C.J. the one with all the answers... or does Micah bring more to the relationship than it first seems? As their lives become more and more entangled in the AIDS epidemic that’s laying waste to their community, and the AIDS activism that will ultimately bring a strong voice to their demands, whatever Micah and C.J. have between them will be tested, strained, pushed, and pulled -- but it will also be a lifeline in a time of death, a bond that will determine the course of their futures. In Destination Unknown, Bill Konigsberg returns to a time he knew well as a teenager to tell a story of identity, connection, community, and survival.

Download or read book The Unknown as an Engine for Science written by Hans J. Pirner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the limits of our knowledge. The author shows how uncertainty and indefiniteness not only define the borders confining our understanding, but how they feed into the process of discovery and help to push back these borders. Starting with physics the author collects examples from economics, neurophysiology, history, ecology and philosophy. The first part shows how information helps to reduce indefiniteness. Understanding rests on our ability to find the right context, in which we localize a problem as a point in a network of connections. New elements must be combined with the old parts of the existing complex knowledge system, in order to profit maximally from the information. An attempt is made to quantify the value of information by its ability to reduce indefiniteness. The second part explains how to handle indefiniteness with methods from fuzzy logic, decision theory, hermeneutics and semiotics. It is not sufficient that the new element appears in an experiment, one also has to find a theoretical reason for its existence. Indefiniteness becomes an engine of science, which gives rise to new ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials with Rheological Properties presents the evolution of the mathematical models used to calculate the resistance structures and the conditions which enable progress to be made in this field. The author presents equations describing the behavior of each possible type of resistance structure (with discrete collaboration, continuous collaboration and complex composition). These equations are then redefined in the particular concrete form for each type of structure, by using the notions and known parameters from the construction's statics. The mathematical models are then tested using practical case studies.

Download or read book The Unknown She written by Hilary Hart and published by The Golden Sufi Center. This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a mystical consciousness particularly natural to women? And if so, what role is it playing in the spiritual evolution of our world? To answer these questions, Hilary Hart traveled across the world meeting with contemporary mystics from a variety of traditions including Lakota Sioux, Sufism, Buddhism, and West-African shamanism. The revelations of feminine wisdom offered from these encounters are not conceptual teachings, but vivid examples of lived spirituality expressed sometimes through simple ways of being, sometimes through profound mystical experiences. Revolutionary and remarkably practical, The Unknown She offers a startling new look at women’s unique mystical orientation and its place in the evolution of our universal consciousness. “... for serious students of mystical traditions and women's spirituality, this challenging book offers rewards not found in more conventional works.” —Publishers Weekly “... a profound exploration of what may become the most important development in the 21st Century: the return of the feminine voice in spiritual experience.” —Tsultrim Allione, author, Women of Wisdom A wonderful book! Here, the deep feminine speaks beautifully with inspiration and wisdom so terribly needed in our times.” —Jack Kornfield, author, After the Ecstasy, the Laundry and founding teacher of Spirit Rock Meditation Center “In this sensitive and beautifully crafted book, Hilary Hart has listened to the voice of a new, emergent, mystical consciousness in women and through her careful witnessing has offered it to us as a precious gift.” Anne Baring, author, —The Myth of the Goddess

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From “an exceptional storyteller,” Somewhere in the Unknown World is a collection of powerful stories of refugees who have found new lives in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, told by the award-winning author of The Latehomecomer and The Song Poet. All over this country, there are refugees. But beyond the headlines, few know who they are, how they live, or what they have lost. Although Minnesota is not known for its diversity, the state has welcomed more refugees per capita than any other, from Syria to Bosnia, Thailand to Liberia. Now, with nativism on the rise, Kao Kalia Yang—herself a Hmong refugee—has gathered stories of the stateless who today call the Twin Cities home. Here are people who found the strength and courage to rebuild after leaving all they hold dear. Awo and her mother, who escaped from Somalia, reunite with her father on the phone every Saturday, across the span of continents and decades. Tommy, born in Minneapolis to refugees from Cambodia, cannot escape the war that his parents carry inside. As Afghani flees the reach of the Taliban, he seeks at every stop what he calls a certificate of his humanity. Mr. Truong brings pho from Vietnam to Frogtown in St. Paul, reviving a crumbling block as well as his own family. In Yang’s exquisite, necessary telling, these fourteen stories for refugee journeys restore history and humanity to America's strangers and redeem its long tradition of welcome.

Download or read book Taking Stakes in the Unknown written by Nana Adusei-Poku and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, Freestyle, a survey exhibition curated by Thelma Golden at the Studio Museum in Harlem, introduced both a young generation of artists of African descent and the ambitious yet knowingly opaque term post-black to a pre 9-11 and pre-Obama world. In Taking Stakes in the Unknown, Nana Adusei-Poku contextualizes the term post-black in its socio-historical and cultural context. Whilst exploring its present legacy and past potential, she examines works by artists who were defined as part of the post-black generation: Mark Bradford, Leslie Hewitt, Mickalene Thomas and Hank Willis Thomas - and, by expanding the scope of the definition, the Black German artist Philip Metz.
