Book The Kansas University Quarterly Vol 4

Download or read book The Kansas University Quarterly Vol 4 written by W. H. Carruth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kansas University Quarterly, Vol. 4: Devoted to the Publication of the Results of Research by Members of the University of Kansas; July, 1895, to April, 1896 Altogether, the outlook is good for gas and oil in Kansas. Their production must add very largely to the wealth of the state. In the eastern part of the state, it is true, fuel is not such an item of expense as farther west, but the use of natural gas and oil here will tend to increase the manufacturing industries, and in that way benefit the people very materially. It is conceded that last year there was only one state where the yield of natural gas had not decreased. If the same thing should prove to be true in this part of the country, and a maximum production should be reached in a few years, still the effort will not be in vain, for not only will the gas be of use. While it does last, but it will pave the way for the general introduction of some cheap fuel gas, which can be made from the petroleum of the state, or from other cheap combustible material. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbia University Quarterly, 1901-1902, Vol. 4 Their counting-houses and homes were and in part still are familiar land-marks of New York life. They were thoroughly comfortable; yet with a touch of austerity, spacious yet simple plain, perhaps, yet adorned with what characterized the career of the owner. We have all seen the cabinet museums with their shells from distant strands, the South Sea curiosities gathered from remote ports of call, the few choice pictures on the walls, and often the homely reminders of a just ancestral pride. The lives that were led in such houses were marked by pleasant existence and genial thought. Hospitality was the characteristic of them all; their virtues were piety and probity. The owners had other uses for their abundant means than lavish display, and there was no taint of enervating aestheticism in the atmosphere. There was not even a tinge of the narrow Spirit which sometimes marks the trader, but there was the generous soul of catholic commerce. There was no superfluity, because the masters practiced a broad Christian philanthropy which sprang from the sense of re sponsible stewardship. Cheerfulness abounded, because a due regard was paid to a full measure of innocent pleasure, to interesting and ennobling avocations. Book The Western Landscape in Cormac McCarthy and Wallace Stegner

Download or read book The Western Landscape in Cormac McCarthy and Wallace Stegner written by Megan Riley McGilchrist and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The western American landscape has always had great significance in American thinking, requiring an unlikely union between frontier mythology and the reality of a fragile western environment. Additionally it has borne the burden of being a gendered space, seen by some as the traditional "virgin land" of the explorers and pioneers, subject to masculine desires, and by others as a masculine space in which the feminine is neither desired nor appreciated. Both Wallace Stegner and Cormac McCarthy focus on this landscape and environment; its spiritual, narrative, symbolic, imaginative, and ideological force is central to their work. In this study, McGilchrist shows how their various treatments of these issues relate to the social climates (pre- and post-Vietnam era) in which they were written, and how despite historical discontinuities, both Stegner and McCarthy reveal a similar unease about the effects of the myth of the frontier on American thought and life. The gendering of the landscape is revealed as indicative of the attempts to deny the failure of the myth, and to force the often numinous western landscape into parameters which will never contain it. Stegner's pre-Vietnam sensibility allows the natural world to emerge tentatively triumphant from the ruins of frontier mythology, whereas McCarthy's conclusions suggest a darker future for the West in particular and America in general. However, McGilchrist suggests that the conclusion of McCarthy's Border Trilogy, upon which her arguments regarding McCarthy are largely based, offers a gleam of hope in its final conclusion of acceptance of the feminine.
