Born in middle-class Philadelphia in the 1940s, Howardena Pindell came of age during the Civil Rights movement. As an African-American woman artist, making her way in the world provided Pindell with source material to inspire her work. This book examines every facet of Pindell's impressive career to date. Since the 1960s, she has used materials such as glitter, talcum powder, and perfume to stretch the boundaries of traditional canvas painting. She has also infused her work with traces of her labor, such as obsessively affixing dots of pigment and circles made with an ordinary hole punch tool. After a car crash in 1979 left her with short-term amnesia, Pindell's work looked beyond the painting studio to explore a wide range of subjects, including the personal and diaristic as well as the social and political. This monograph also highlights Pindell's work with photography, film, and performance. Excerpts from the artist's writing, in particular her critique of the art world and her responses to feminism and racial politics, provide prescient commentary in light of conversations around equality and inclusion today. This project was commissioned by FotoFocus as part of the 2018 Biennial, in response to the theme of "The Archive." Eliza Gregory was invited to Wave Pool to complete this project, and she invited Gemma-Rose Turnbull to work with her. Turnbull came from Australia to complete the onsite work, and Gregory advised the project from Woodland, California.25 community members were interviewed over the period of residence. We focused on those people intentionally growing the place (through art, food, and other making) as well as those long-term residents extending their knowledge to newcomers.We had surveys in place at the gallery, and the questions were used as the loose basis of the interviews. Material was collected from sources like Facebook groups, which included posts and clippings, as well as from the people interviewed. Photographs were made by digital and film cameras, as well as cell phone. Surveys, articles, photographs, books, and other materials were scanned.The 480-page publication should be thought of as a catalogue of the available material. Which is available as a digital archive to be accessed and used as needed by future artists, as well as by the current and future community of Camp Washington.

In The Accidental Archives of the Royal Chicano Air Force, world-famous archaeologist La Stef and the clandestine Con Sapos Archaeological Collective track down the “facts” about the elusive RCAF, the Rebel Chicano Art Front that, through an understandable mix-up with the Royal Canadian Air Force, became the Royal Chicano Air Force. La Stef and her fellow archaeologists document the plight and locura que cura of the RCAF, a group renowned for its fleet of adobe airplanes, ongoing subversive performance stance, and key role as poster makers for the United Farm Workers Union during the height of the Chicano civil rights movement.
