Book excerpt: Quantum physicist, New York Times bestselling author, and BBC host Jim Al-Khalili reveals how 8 lessons from the heart of science can help you get the most out of life Today’s world is unpredictable and full of contradictions, and navigating its complexities while trying to make the best decisions is far from easy. The Joy of Science presents 8 short lessons on how to unlock the clarity, empowerment, and joy of thinking and living a little more scientifically. In this brief guide to leading a more rational life, acclaimed physicist Jim Al-Khalili invites readers to engage with the world as scientists have been trained to do. The scientific method has served humankind well in its quest to see things as they really are, and underpinning the scientific method are core principles that can help us all navigate modern life more confidently. Discussing the nature of truth and uncertainty, the role of doubt, the pros and cons of simplification, the value of guarding against bias, the importance of evidence-based thinking, and more, Al-Khalili shows how the powerful ideas at the heart of the scientific method are deeply relevant to the complicated times we live in and the difficult choices we make. Read this book and discover the joy of science. It will empower you to think more objectively, see through the fog of your own preexisting beliefs, and lead a more fulfilling life.

Makischal College Fkoh 1680 To 1740. Immediately after the Restoration, the Soots Parliament passed an important Act dealing with Marischal College. On the 20th March, 1661, it confirmed the earl's charter "and further of new Gives and dispones to the said Culledga Masters and members thairof all freedoms liberties priveledges and jurisdiction that to any frie Colledge within this Realme be law and practick is known to apperteane." This Act has a bearing upon a question which, as we shall see, led to a lawsuit--the dispute as to the scope of the Marischal College charter. The next twenty years have nothing of interest to record. The Revolution had as little effect upon the University as the Restoration. All the members seem to have taken the oath of allegiance. The Principal at the time was Robert Paterson, who had been appointed in 1679. Before then, he had been a regent. The legislation of the Commission of 1690 has already been detailed, and needs no. further notice. We possess, however, one of the documents sent by Marischal College to that body, giving an account of the curriculum of that date. It is interesting to compare it with the account of studies given in 1647. (1) The first year students "are instructed in Philologie, Hebrew, Greek, and Latine, and the principles of Arithmetick; and when they have made some progress in those languages, towards the middle of the year, they declaims and make public orationes befor the masters and students upon some commendable subject both in Greek and Latine." (2) Those of the second year "are instructed in Logick and the methods of reasoning, both conforme to the principle of old and new Philosophic, their severall penses and taskes are explained each morning by the master of...

THE BEGINNINGS OF THE MEDICAL SCHOOL. By far the most interesting feature in the University during the eighteenth century was the attempt to found a medical school. Although King's College "Bad been endowed with a Faculty of Medicine and a Mediciner--the first in Great Britain--from the very beginning, the subject had scarcely had time to develop under Eoman Catholic rule, while the Protestants had aimed, consciously and unconsciously, at reducing the University to a mere school of philosophy by suppressing Medicine and Law altogether. Efforts had been made from time to time to make Medicine a living part of the University. The first notable step in this direction was taken by Dr. William Gordon, who held the chair at King's College between 1632 and 1649, and who fought with persistent energy for the full recognition of his subject. Having "exercesed the students sufficientlie in the dissection of beasts," he made an application to the Privy Council in 1636 for the delivery of dead bodies to the ' Colledge of Aberdeen ." He pointed out that it was the custom at other Universities where Medicine was taught, for the municipal authorities to present several bodies to be "publictlie anatomised ." The Privy Council acceded to the request, by requesting the Sheriff and the Town Councils of Aberdeen and Banff to deliver annually to the applicant "twa bodies of men, being notable malefactors, executte in thair bounds, especiallie being rebells and outlawis; and failzeing of them, the bodies of the poorer sort, dieing in hospitalls; or abortive bairns, foundlings; or of those of no qualitie, who hes died of thare diseases, and hes few friends or acquaintance that can take exception ." When it is remembered that this application was made...
