Book The Universalist s Assistant

Download or read book The Universalist s Assistant written by Darius Forbes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universalist's Assistant: Or an Examination of the Principal Objections Commonly Urged Against Universalism This volume is rather unique in its character; and the author feels great diffidence in presenting it to the public. But it has long: seemed to him that something of the kind was needed. Tracts have been and now are circulated all through the community, presenting an array of objections against Universalism, while there has been no one book, which could be placed in the hands of those whose minds are attempted to be influenced by these little books, in which their objections are answered in detail. Answers to very many of them are scattered through the various newspapers and books that have been published by the believers of this doctrine; but they are not available to the great mass of readers. Were any apology needed for the peculiar character of this work, or the form in which its materials are presented, it would be the manifest advantages secured by it. In arranging the matter in the form of answers to objections, an opportunity is afforded to embrace a much wider range of topics in the same space, and make the materials directly available where wanted, to an extent which could not be secured by a formal treatise upon the several subjects which come under review. This form, therefore, seems better adapted to answer the great end for which it is designed, than any other that presented itself to the author's mind. The authors attention was first called to the want of some book of this kind, about ten years since, by the circulation of great numbers of tracts, devoted to the exhibition of objections against Universalism, among the members of his congregation. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking new vision for public safety that overturns more than 200 years of fear-based discrimination, othering, and punishment As the effects of aggressive policing and mass incarceration harm historically marginalized communities and tear families apart, how do we define safety? In a time when the most powerful institutions in the United States are embracing the repressive and racist systems that keep many communities struggling and in fear, we need to reimagine what safety means. Community leader and lawyer Zach Norris lays out a radical way to shift the conversation about public safety away from fear and punishment and toward growth and support systems for our families and communities. In order to truly be safe, we are going to have to dismantle our mentality of Us vs. Them. By bridging the divides and building relationships with one another, we can dedicate ourselves to strategic, smart investments—meaning resources directed toward our stability and well-being, like healthcare and housing, education and living-wage jobs. This is where real safety begins. Originally published in hardcover as We Keep Us Safe: Building Secure, Just, and Inclusive Communities, Defund Fear is a blueprint of how to hold people accountable while still holding them in community. The result reinstates full humanity and agency for everyone who has been dehumanized and traumatized, so they can participate fully in life, in society, and in the fabric of our democracy.

Book Cultural Competence in Applied Psychology

Download or read book Cultural Competence in Applied Psychology written by Craig L. Frisby and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 731 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of its kind, this provocative book evaluates the construct of cultural competence from multiple perspectives. At the intersection of diverse disciplines and domains, contributors argue for greater clarity in understanding the cultural competence construct, a deeper level of analysis as to its multifaceted components, and call for concrete practical objectives and science-based means of measurement. Serious, nuanced discussion addresses challenges, strengths, and limitations of current cultural competence practice in terms of sociocultural concepts (e.g., race, ethnicity) and practical concepts (e.g., sensitivity in the therapeutic relationship, treatment efficacy). In addition, contributors identify future directions for research, training, and practice with the potential to spur the further evolution of this clinically important construct. This timely book: Critiques the cultural competence construct and its evaluation as it is currently disseminated within applied psychology. Compares and contrasts how cultural competence is defined within clinical, school, and counseling psychology. Analyzes difficulties and challenges in understanding the cultural competence construct as evaluated through the lens of closely related fields outside of applied psychology. Spotlights complexities in cultural competence issues pertaining to specific populations. Sets out implications for education and training, offering a detailed outline for an ideal college course in cultural competence With this level of reasoning and rigor, Cultural Competence in Applied Psychology is sure to stimulate long-overdue dialogue and debate among professionals across a wide variety of fields, such as clinical psychology, social work, child and social psychology, psychotherapy, school psychology, and counseling.
